A bilateral upper limb interactive game-based virtual reality rehabilitation system for stroke patients: a usability and clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality has received significant attention in clinical rehabilitation. Therefore, we developed a bilateral upper limb interactive game-based VR system for post-stroke rehabilitation of the upper extremities, and assessed its usability and clinical efficacy. METHODS: We carried out a usability test for this system within representative user groups. Then, the clinical efficacy was assessed through a randomized controlled trial, in which 22 patients with stroke received 12 sessions (4 weeks) of conventional physical therapy or bilateral upper limb synchronous training based on

Effects of a Safety User Interface Bundle on Verification Intentions in Generative AI Chat Use Among Older Chinese Adults: Randomized Vignette Survey.

BACKGROUND: Generative AI chat systems are increasingly used for everyday information seeking, but plausible errors and omissions can mislead users when outputs are accepted without scrutiny. Interface-level safety cues may help users calibrate trust and engage in verification; yet, evidence in older Chinese adults remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test whether adding a safety user interface (UI) bundle to a generative AI chat interface increases verification intention among older Chinese adults and to examine selected secondary outcomes, including reliance intention, trust cali

Test-Retest Reliability and Preliminary Reference Data for the Virtual Eggs Test in Healthy Adults.

Rehabilitation professionals rely on hand assessment to select the proper therapy and monitor the recovery process over time. The Virtual Eggs Test (VET) is a unique assessment tool that evaluates both fine and gross hand dexterity, taking into account not only the speed in performing an action but also the accuracy in regulating the grip force. The VET was preliminary validated with amputees and healthy individuals, demonstrating construct validity, but also highlighting some weaknesses that required a protocol revision. Here, we present the update version of the protocol and of the outcomes

Successful transfer of myoelectric skill from virtual interface to prosthesis control.

Objective.Prosthesis control can be seen as a new skill to be learned. To enhance learning, both internal and augmented feedback are exploited. The latter represents external feedback sources that can be designed to enhance learning, e.g. biofeedback. Previous research has shown that augmented feedback protocols can be designed to induce retention by adhering to the guidance hypothesis, but it is not clear yet if that also results in transfer of those skills to prosthesis control. In this study, we test if a training paradigm optimised for retention allows for the transfer of myoelectric skill

The IUPHAR/BPS guide to PHARMACOLOGY in 2022: curating pharmacology for COVID-19, malaria and antibacterials.

The IUPHAR/BPS Guide to PHARMACOLOGY (GtoPdb; www.guidetopharmacology.org) is an open-access, expert-curated database of molecular interactions between ligands and their targets. We describe expansion in content over nine database releases made during the last two years, which has focussed on three main areas of infection. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a major impact on health worldwide. GtoPdb has sought to support the wider research community to understand the pharmacology of emerging drug targets for SARS-CoV-2 as well as potential targets in the host to block viral entry and redu

MMRdb: Measles, mumps, and rubella viruses database and analysis resource.

Measles, mumps, and rubella viruses are well known human pathogens that cause mild to severe illnesses. Despite the existence of MMR vaccines since 1971, outbreaks have been largely documented even in highly vaccinated populations. There is a pressing need to develop a resource to monitor genetic and antigenic variations among these viruses. Here, we introduced MMRdb, a web central database and analysis resource for measles, mumps, and rubella viruses. Users can search viruses at gene level and obtain sequence information based on gene product, geographic location, year, or host. The MMRdb als

Development of a 3D, networked multi-user virtual reality environment for home therapy after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Impairment of upper extremity function is a common outcome following stroke, to the detriment of lifestyle and employment opportunities. Yet, access to treatment may be limited due to geographical and transportation constraints, especially for those living in rural areas. While stroke rates are higher in these areas, stroke survivors in these regions of the country have substantially less access to clinical therapy. Home therapy could offer an important alternative to clinical treatment, but the inherent isolation and the monotony of self-directed training can greatly reduce compli

Body ownership causes illusory self-attribution of speaking and influences subsequent real speaking.

When we carry out an act, we typically attribute the action to ourselves, the sense of agency. Explanations for agency include conscious prior intention to act, followed by observation of the sensory consequences; brain activity that involves the feed-forward prediction of the consequences combined with rapid inverse motor prediction to fine-tune the action in real time; priming where there is, e.g., a prior command to perform the act; a cause (the intention to act) preceding the effect (the results of the action); and common-sense rules of attribution of physical causality satisfied. e-HCL-32: a useful, valid and user friendly tool in the screening of bipolar II disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bipolar type II (BDII) is a frequent disorder with high morbidity and mortality, characterized by depressive and hypomanic episodes. Early diagnosis can be effective in improving long-term prognosis. However, diagnosing BDII is challenging due to the difficulty in detecting past hypomanic episodes. The HCL-32 is a widely used and reliable screening instrument for the detection of past hypomanic episodes. Making this tool available to more patients could help diagnose and treat undetected cases of BDII earlier. New technologies such as the Internet have been previousl

ZODET: software for the identification, analysis and visualisation of outlier genes in microarray expression data.

SUMMARY: Complex human diseases can show significant heterogeneity between patients with the same phenotypic disorder. An outlier detection strategy was developed to identify variants at the level of gene transcription that are of potential biological and phenotypic importance. Here we describe a graphical software package (z-score outlier detection (ZODET)) that enables identification and visualisation of gross abnormalities in gene expression (outliers) in individuals, using whole genome microarray data. Mean and standard deviation of expression in a healthy control cohort is used to detect

Combined effects of auditory and visual cues on the perception of vection.

Vection is the illusion of self-motion in the absence of real physical movement. The aim of the present study was to analyze how multisensory inputs (visual and auditory) contribute to the perception of vection. Participants were seated in a stationary position in front of a large, curved projection display and were exposed to a virtual scene that constantly rotated around the yaw-axis, simulating a 360° rotation. The virtual scene contained either only visual, only auditory, or a combination of visual and auditory cues. Additionally, simulated rotation speed (90°/s vs. 60°/s) and the number o

Social anxiety in online and real-life interaction and their associated factors.

Social anxiety was compared between online and real-life interaction in a sample of 2,348 college students. Severity of social anxiety in both real-life and online interaction was tested for associations with depression, Internet addiction, Internet activity type (gaming versus chatting), and scores on Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS)/Behavioral Activation System (BAS) scales. The results showed that social anxiety was lower when interacting online than when interacting offline. Depression, Internet addiction, and high BIS and BAS scores were associated with high social anxiety. The social a

Virtual humans versus standardized patients: which lead residents to more correct diagnoses?

PURPOSE: Medical educators frequently use standardized patient (SP) encounters to bridge the gap between didactic education and practical application. Typically, SPs are healthy adults with no consistent physical findings; however, highly immersive virtual humans (VHs) may enable the consistent presentation of abnormal physical findings to multiple learners across multiple repetitions. Thus, the authors conducted this study to compare how frequently junior anesthesiology residents suspected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in preoperative assessments of SPs versus a VH. METHOD: The authors prese
