Our previous study has shown that pluronic lecithin organogel (PLO gel) made of ricinoleic acid has the potential for use as a transdermal eyelid delivery system. The present study deals with the evaluation of ocular tissue concentrations of dexamethasone in a rabbit model following topical application of the gel formulation onto the eyelids. Steroid-induced skin atrophy is the most frequent and perhaps most important cutaneous side effect of topical glucocorticoid therapy. To date, it has not been described in vulvar skin. Leishmaniasis is a protozoan infectious disease that often affects the skin and may acquire a chronic and difficult to treat course. Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a novel treatment which involves the selective uptake of a photosensitizing agent. Exposure to an appropriate light source in the presence of oxygen leads to formation of reactive oxygen species and destruction of the target cells. We report on the successful treatment of a 69-year-old patient with a relapse of long-standing cutaneous leishmaniasis using intralesional aminolevulinic acid-PDT.

The antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil (TTO), the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia are well documented. In order to optimize its therapeutic activity, TTO patches were designed. The aim of this work was the formulation of monolayer patches containing TTO. Moreover, the performance of oleic acid (OA) as a skin penetration enhancer in patches was evaluated. Terpinen-4-ol (T4OL), the main component of TTO, was the marker used to evaluate TTO skin permeability. The permeation study was performed through human epidermis by using Franz diffusion cells.

PATIENT(S): A patient who had used oral contraceptives contracted SC and submucosal tumefaction every 1 or 2 months. She was diagnosed with type I hereditary angioedema. It was determined that she was complement C4 deficient and C1-inhibitor quantitative deficient but functional C1-inhibitor normal.
