The prevalence and the clinical meaning of cannabis use in patients with chronic psychosis has not been systematically explored. The authors have compared the diagnostic and symptomatological characteristics of 111 male patients affected by chronic psychosis with and without past or current use of cannabis. Sixty-six patients were still using or had used cannabis; in all cases the use preceded the onset of psychotic symptoms. Forty-three patients were cannabis-positive on urinary screening at the moment of hospitalization and 23 were currently cannabis-free but reported the use of cannabis in

BACKGROUND: Indian hemp (lat. Cannabis sativa subs. Indica) has been used as a source of industrial fiber, seed oil, food, medicine for some somatic diseases, and it is also used as a psychoactive substance. Cannabis can be used by smoking, evaporation, as a food ingredient, or as an extract. Acute and chronic cannabis use has been shown to be detrimental to several aspects of psychological and physical health and many experimental studies done on healthy people indicate the potential of Δ9- tetra hydro cannabinoid (THC) in inducing transient, dose-dependent psychotic symptoms, but also affect

BACKGROUND: Individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis represent a heterogeneous group with a high rate of comorbid psychiatric disorders. There is little information on whether certain qualitative aspects of psychotic symptoms among CHR individuals may be predictive of future psychosis. This study focused on describing the prevalence of first-rank symptoms (FRS) among a sample of CHR individuals and its association with future transition to psychosis and, from a neurodevelopmental perspective, the level of adjustment of individuals at CHR during their childhood was also analysed.

INTRODUCTION: Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy is a minimally invasive technique that has been used increasingly in the treatment of mammographically detected, non-palpable breast lesions. Clip placement at the biopsy site is standard practice after vacuum-assisted breast biopsy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 62-year-old woman with suspicious microcalcifications in her left breast. The patient was informed about vacuum-assisted breast biopsy, including clip placement. During the course of taking the patient's history, she communicated excellently, her demeanor was normal, she discl

OBJECTIVE: The identification of effective continuation and maintenance strategies for elderly patients with psychotic depression is a critical issue that has not been fully explored. The aim of this study was to assess the tolerability and efficacy of continuation/maintenance electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in elderly patients with psychotic depression after acute ECT remission.
METHODS: The authors used a longitudinal, randomized, single-blind design to compare by survival analysis the 2-year outcome of two subgroups of elderly patients with psychotic unipolar depression who were ECT (plus

BACKGROUND: Postoperative onset of acute major depression in a patient with no previous history of psychiatric disorder is highly unexpected after skull base surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 38-year-old woman with no previous physical or mental illness presented with a 3-month history of left ear pain, short-term memory disturbance, and motor dysphasia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large extraaxial tumor in the left middle fossa. Left temporal craniotomy was performed, achieving complete tumor resection. The patient showed signs of confusion, disorientation, and severe depression 3 days

Aims/Background Intellectual developmental disorders (IDD) are characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, affecting conceptual, social, and practical skills. They impact 1% of the global population, with mild cases being more common. Major causes include prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal factors, although a clear cause is often not identified. This study aims to evaluate the comorbidity of psychological disorders in individuals diagnosed with IDD. Methods Following the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses" (PRISMA

Psychosis is a complicated neuropsychiatric disorder that involves disruptions in perception and thinking, often resulting in hallucinations and delusions. Diagnosing and treating psychosis can be challenging due to its overlap with conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder. Recent research has focused on identifying the genetic and biochemical markers of psychiatric disorders, which can aid in better diagnosis and treatment. Schizophrenia, a type of psychosis, has a strong genetic component, making family history crucial for diagnosis, especially in cases with early onset. Research on

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence and negative attitudes to treatment are common clinical problems when treating psychotic disorders. This study investigated how schizophrenia core symptoms and daily functioning affect treatment adherence and attitudes toward antipsychotic medication and to compare patients using clozapine or other antipsychotics.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study with data from 275 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Patients adherence, attitudes, insight and side-effects were evaluated using the Attitudes toward Neuroleptic Treatment scale. Overall symptomology

BACKGROUND: Although the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have been studied extensively, there is relatively little information available on adult mental health functioning among exposed individuals. The current study compares the self-reported midlife mental health status of individuals who were prenatally exposed to alcohol and diagnosed in childhood with the effects of this exposure with that of unexposed individuals.
METHODS: Participants (N = 292) were recruited from two longitudinal cohorts in Atlanta and Seattle and asked to complete an Adult Health Questionnaire that surveye

OBJECTIVE: Patients with adult attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder can present with similar symptoms, including increased energy, distractibility, disorganization, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and rapid speech. Determining whether the patient has either, or possibly both, of these syndromes can be a complex task. This review attempts to clarify where these disorders overlap, both symptomatically and epidemiologically, and where they diverge, to help clinicians increase the accuracy of their diagnoses. Changes to diagnostic criteria from the fourth to the fifth

BACKGROUND: The major diagnostic classifications consider mania as a uni-dimensional illness. Factor analytic studies of acute mania are fewer compared to schizophrenia and depression. Evidence from factor analysis suggests more categories or subtypes than what is included in the classification systems. Studies have found that these factors can predict differences in treatment response and prognosis.
METHODS: The sample included 131 patients consecutively admitted to an acute psychiatry unit over a period of one year. It included 76 (58%) males. The mean age was 44.05 years (SD = 15.6). Patie

Impulsivity is elevated in psychosis and during mania in bipolar disorder. Studies in unaffected relatives may help establish whether impulsivity is a heritable, state independent endophenotype. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine whether impulsivity is elevated in unaffected relatives of those with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder, compared to controls. Databases were systematically searched up until March 2023 for articles reporting data on a behavioral or self-report measure of impulsivity in first-degree relatives and controls. Ni

UNLABELLED: We present one case of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with predominant psychiatric manifestations, treated with success by cyclophosphamide. From this case, we review the psychiatric aspects of these two autoimmune diseases as described in the literature and we present the etiopathogenic hypothesis and treatment of the psychiatric disorders. Case report--In August 1996, a 38 year old man was admitted in our psychiatric department for agitation. Primary SS had been diagnosed in July 1996. He had previously attempted to suicide but was never h

Schizophrenia is a complex heterogenous disorder thought to be caused by interactions between genetic and environmental factors. The theories developed to explain the etiology of schizophrenia have focused largely on the dysfunction of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and glutamate with their receptors, although research in the past several decades has indicated strongly that other factors are also involved and that the role of neuroglial cells in psychotic disorders including schizophrenia should be given more attention. Although glia were originally thought to be present in the

Dopaminergic dysfunction has traditionally been associated with psychotic disorders. However, emerging evidence implicates dopamine in a broader range of psychiatric conditions. This review critically reexamines dopamine's role beyond psychosis, focusing on major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)-three high-burden conditions where current treatments remain suboptimal for many patients. This review is conducted to synthesise and critically evaluate the evidence for dopamine dysfunction as a transdiagnostic mechanism underpinning core symptom domains

BACKGROUND: Concurrent disorder or dual diagnosis refers to a combination of substance use disorders and mental disorders that occur in the same patient simultaneously. These conditions pose significant clinical and healthcare impacts and are often underdiagnosed, undertreated, and complex to manage.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the quality of current pharmacological recommendations for the management of dual diagnosis, particularly by evaluating the use of second-generation antipsychotics (SGA).
METHODS: A literature search was performed using the PubMed and Scopus databases for publications up t

Although the traditional nosological view interprets mania as strictly connected with depression in the context of manic-depressive illness, unipolar mania (UM), that is, the lifetime occurrence of mania or hypomania in the absence of depression, has been proposed as a necessary diagnostic entity. Epidemiological data estimate that at least 5% of people with type I bipolar disorder never experienced depression. These subjects are more often males with a hyperthymic temperament, a younger age at onset, and more psychotic features. Current classification systems do not formally recognize UM, but
