Clinical assessment of sympathetic function in man.

Investigations are reviewed which are suitable for use in clinical situations in which lesions of the sympathetic nervous system are suspected. Particular attention is given to the problems of cardiovascular regulation as orthostatic hypotension is one of the commoner manifestations of sympathetic failure. Tests of the autonomic innervation of the eyes are also discussed. Tests of parasympathetic function are briefly described, as both parts of the autonomic nervous system may be affected by the same disease process.

Hypothalamic deafferentation inhibits the stimulatory influence of prolactin on follicle-stimulating hormone release in the golden hamster.

We have examined the effects of PRL-producing ectopic pituitary grafts on plasma FSH and LH levels in male golden hamsters with anterior (AHD) and anteolateral hypothalamic deafferentation (ALHD). After hypothalamic deafferentation or sham deafferentation, hamsters received pituitary transplants under the kidney capsule. In the first experiment, the animals were unilaterally nephrectomized 5-6 weeks after transplantation to remove the ectopic pituitaries. In a second experiment the ectopic pituitaries remained under the kidney capsule for the duration of the experiment. Serial blood samples we

Bit-mapped colour imaging of the potential fields of propagated and segmental subcortical components of somatosensory evoked potentials in man.

Early somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to median or ulnar nerve stimulation were recorded with non-cephalic reference from neck, oesophagus and scalp in normal young adults. Transit times and durations were estimated for different components. SEP fields were mapped with up to 24 skin electrodes around the neck or along the midline neck and scalp, and projected onto a 2-dimensional plane for bit-mapped colour imaging. The posterior neck N11 is a near-field potential propagated caudorostrally in the dorsal column, associated with a positive P11 far field beyond termination of the cuneate b

Sympathetic hyperactivity elevates blood pressure during acute cerebroventricular infusions of hypertonic salt in rats.

Hypertonic solutions of 0.3 M sodium chloride (NaCl) infused into the third ventricle (ICV) for 20 min in urethane-anesthetized rats consist … roreceptor afferents. Augmentation of pressor responsiveness following interruption of baroreceptor afferent pathways suggests that increases in sympathetic activity and blood pressure produced by hypertonic NaCl could contribute to salt-induced hypertension, particularly when baroreceptor buffering becomes deficient.

Enkephalins induce a centrally mediated rise in blood pressure in rats.

The cardiovascular effects of enkephalins after administration directly into the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) of urethane anesthetized rats were investigated. Unilateral microinjection of Met-enkephalin and its stable analogue D-Ala2-Met5-enkephalin resulted in a dose-related rise in mean arterial pressure which in the case of the analogue was accompanied by tachycardia. The elevation in blood pressure was anatomically specific and restricted to the intermediate third of the NTS, as verified histologically. These cardiovascular changes were prevented by pretreatment with locally applied nal

Afferent properties of periarcuate neurons in macaque monkeys. I. Somatosensory responses.

The afferent properties of single neurons of the periarcuate cortex have been studied in the macaque monkey. Most of the recorded neurons responded to stimuli in one or two sensory modalities and, accordingly, they were classified as somatosensory, visual or bimodal (visual and somatosensory) neurons. Visual neurons were located rostral to the arcuate sulcus, whereas the somatosensory and the bimodal neurons were found predominantly caudal to this sulcus. Somatosensory neurons (n = 102) and bimodal neurons (n = 69) had identical somatic afferent properties. They were subdivided into 'tactile'

A light microscopic investigation of the afferent connections of the lateral reticular nucleus in the cat.

The topographical organization of the projections to the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) of the cat was investigated using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP), silver-impregnation and autoradiographic tracing methods. Following injection of HRP into the LRN, labelled cells were found mainly within Rexed's laminae VII and VIII of the spinal cord, the contralateral red nucleus, the ventro-rostral aspect of the contralateral fastigial nucleus and the contralateral anterior sigmoid and coronal gyri of the cerebral cortex. Animals with injections of tritiated amino acids placed within the pericruciate

Peripheral pathway of proprioceptive fibres from feline extra-ocular muscles. I. A histological study.

The findings of the previous study (1976) involving orbital operations in 12 cats have been confirmed in this study involving intracranial operations in 20 more cats. The perikarya of origin of afferent fibres from feline extra-ocular msucles have been clearly localised to the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus. The functional subdivision in the nucleus that was noted earlier has been reaffirmed. Thus the caudal or pontine part was the location of cell bodies from the lateral rectus muscle, the intermediate part contained those from the superior oblique, while the other muscles were represented

The afferent connections of the main and the accessory olfactory bulb formations in the rat: an experimental HRP-study.

The afferent connections of the main and accessory olfactory bulbs in the rat were examined by injecting horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into one or the other of these structures either by microelectrophoresis or by hydraulic pressure. Alternate sections were stained with newly developed HRP-procedures using either benzidine dihydrochloride (de Olmos and Heimer, '77) or tetramethyl-benzidine. Eighteen to twenty-four hours after unilateral HRP injections confined to the main olfactory bulb, a large number of HRP-labeled perikaria appeared in the following telencephalic structures on the ipsilatera

Chronic changes in the response of cells in adult cat dorsal horn following partial deafferentation: the appearance of responding cells in a previously non-responsive region.

One side of the lumbar enlargement in adult cats was partially deafferented by cutting all dorsal roots caudal to L3 with the exception of the S1 dorsal root. At various times after the roots had been sectioned, the response of dorsal horn cells to natural and electrical stimuli applied to the leg and flank were recorded through extracellular glass microelectrodes. When animals were examined up to 24 h after this partial deafferentation, no cells were located in a region between segments L4 and 5 which responded monosynaptically to cutaneous stimulation on the leg. By one week, cells began to

Vomeronasal organ: critical role in mediating sexual behavior of the male hamster.

Sexual behavior in male hamsters is totally abolished by bilateral removal of the olfactory bulbs. This operation eliminates sensory input from both the olfactory and the vomeronasal systems. We previously demonstrated that peripheral destruction of the olfactory receptors caused anosmia but did not impair male hamster mating behavior. Here we demonstrate that peripheral deafferentation of the vomeronasal system produces severe sexual behavior deficits in approximately one-third of the treated animals. Combined deafferentation of both the vomeronasal and the olfactory systems eliminates copula

Renal sensory nerves in injury: more than just sensing.

Recent basic research suggests that the neuroimmune axis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of acute kidney injury. Although it is established that the kidney is innervated by both afferent and efferent nerves, there are few studies on the role of renal sensory nerves. Zhang et al. postulated that renal sensory nerves activate a high IL4Rα expression macrophage subset, resulting in the amelioration of kidney injury. This finding highlights a potential neuroimmune pathway that may represent a novel therapeutic target for acute kidney injury.

Trigeminocardiac reflex in the Postanesthesia care unit.

Bradycardia caused by the oculocardiac reflex is an anticipated occurrence during certain surgeries. The afferent pathway involves the trigeminal nerve's ophthalmic division. Reflex bradycardia from the trigeminocardiac reflex, via stimulation of maxillary or mandibular divisions of cranial nerve V, although less well known, has also been reported intraoperatively. Unstable bradycardia associated with stimulation of the mandibular division of cranial nerve V during trigeminal neuralgia pain episodes in the Postanesthesia Care Unit is presented.

Neuropeptide CART modulates dopamine turnover in the nucleus accumbens: Insights into the anatomy of rewarding circuits.

Neuropeptide cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) is known to influence the activity of the canonical mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway and modulate reward seeking behaviour. CART neurons of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) send afferents to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) and these nuclei, in turn, send secondary projections to nucleus accumbens. We try to dissect the precise sites of CART's action in these circuits in promoting reward. Rats were implanted with bipolar electrode targeted at the lateral hypothalamus-medial forebrain bundle

A non-canonical pathway from cochlea to brain signals tissue-damaging noise.

Intense noise damages the cochlear organ of Corti, particularly the outer hair cells (OHCs) [1]; however, this epithelium is not innervated by nociceptors of somatosensory ganglia, which detect damage elsewhere in the body. The only sensory neurons innervating the organ of Corti originate from the spiral ganglion, roughly 95% of which innervate exclusively inner hair cells (IHCs) [2-4]. Upon sound stimulation, IHCs release glutamate to activate AMPA-type receptors on these myelinated type-I neurons, which carry the neuronal signals to the cochlear nucleus. The remaining spiral ganglion cells (

Spinal cord neuron inputs to the cuneate nucleus that partially survive dorsal column lesions: A pathway that could contribute to recovery after spinal cord injury.

Dorsal column lesions at a high cervical level deprive the cuneate nucleus and much of the somatosensory system of its major cutaneous inputs. Over weeks of recovery, much of the hand representations in the contralateral cortex are reactivated. One possibility for such cortical reactivation by hand afferents is that preserved second-order spinal cord neurons reach the cuneate nucleus through pathways that circumvent the dorsal column lesions, contributing to cortical reactivation in an increasingly effective manner over time. To evaluate this possibility, we first injected anatomical tracers i
