Oral DNA vaccines based on CS-TPP nanoparticles and alginate microparticles confer high protection against infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) infection in trout.

Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is the etiological agent of a contagious viral disease causing remarkable mortalities in different fish species. Despite the availability of commercial vaccines against IPN, the disease still constitutes one of the main threats to the aquaculture industry worldwide. In this study, we developed a DNA vaccine encoding the VP2 gene of IPNV and evaluated its ability to induce protective immunity in rainbow trout fry (3 g) at doses of 10 and 25 μg/fish and boosting with the same doses two weeks later through the oral route using chitosan/tripolyphosphate

[Some issues of the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease].

The clinical inefficacy of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is very frequently encountered in nonerosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (NERD) in particular. Postprandial acid pocket, weak-acid or alkaline reflux, etc. are one of the causes of resistance to antisecretory drugs. Alginates serve as a good alternative to PPIs in treating NERD and gastroesophageal reflux in children and pregnant women. The alginate test may help diagnose NERD.

Assessing the impact of an environmentally friendly approach on irreversible dental hydrocolloid performance.

BACKGROUND: Impression materials can harbour microorganisms from saliva and blood, posing cross-contamination risks. However, post-setting disinfection might compromise the dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties of alginates. Hence, it was the aim of this research to assess the detail reproduction, tear strength, elastic recovery, and surface quality of the gypsum model of newly developed dental alginates with inherent antimicrobial properties. METHODS: Three dental alginate groups with antimicrobial alterations were formulated. One group replaced water with 0.2% chlorhexidine solutio…

In situ bioprinting of patterned prevascular tissue using cell-only bioinks and high-density stem cell-laden alginate microgel bioinks for vascularized bone tissue regeneration.

Microgels are widely used in three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting as supporting baths and bioinks due to their shear-thinning and self-healing behaviors with tunable mechanics. However, producing large quantities of cell-encapsulated microgels remains challenging due to complex, time-consuming processes. This study presents a scalable method for fabricating stem cell encapsulated, photocrosslinkable, shear-thinning, self-healing alginate microgel (SSAM) bioinks using a custom-made spiral mixing unit. Our approach enables efficient, reproducible fabrication of sterile SSAM bioinks, addressing key

Chitosan/oxidized sodium alginate double-network hydrogel incorporated with Zn-BTC: leveraging MOF-polymer interaction mechanisms for enhanced mechanical properties and sustained antibacterial activity.

Conventional wound dressings struggle to conform to wounds located near stretchable body surfaces due to frequent skin movement and stretching. Furthermore, wounds in motion areas are often complicated by persistent infections. To meet these demands, we propose a novel CS/OSA/ZnBTC hydrogel by incorporating Zn-BTC (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) as a dual-functional nanofiller into a chitosan/oxidized sodium alginate (CS/OSA) double-network hydrogel. Mechanical testing revealed that the CS/OSA/ZnBTC hydrogel with a Zn-BTC doping concentration of 3 wt% exhibits enhanced mechanical properti

A dual-functional injectable hydrogel of curcumin-loaded alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan-integrated hydroxyapatite for effective periodontitis treatment via the synergistic regulation of anti-inflammation and osteogenesis coupling.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that ultimately leads to irreversible alveolar bone resorption. Anti-inflammatory therapeutics represent a cornerstone in periodontitis management, while the concomitant integration of promoting osteogenetic agents would be expected to achieve an enhanced therapeutic efficacy. In this study, synthetic nanosized curcumin particles (nCur) with superior biocompatibility, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties were introduced into oxidized alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)-integrated hydroxyapatite (HAP) to obtain an injectable nCur/H

In situ sol-gel-sol transformation formed by sodium alginate realizes folic acid-modified chitosan nanoparticles to deliver hops β-acids for colorectal cancer therapy.

Oral administration can deliver targeted nanoparticles directly to colorectal cancer (CRC) lesions, bypassing systemic circulation. However, orally administered nanoparticles may become physically entrapped in the small intestine, compromising therapeutic efficacy. To overcome this limitation, we designed and prepared folic acid-modified, CRC cell-targeting nanoparticles (FA/CS/TPP/β-acids) and incorporated them into a sodium alginate hydrogel (Alg/FA/CS/TPP/β-acids). The release of β-acids from the nanoparticles was pH-dependent, with cumulative release following the order: pH 7.8 > pH 6.8 >

Pd@SA/β-CD/Fe3O4: Pd nanoparticles on sodium alginate hydrogel beads reinforced with β-cyclodextrin and Fe3O4 particles for effective reductive elimination of organic pollutants.

The increased use of toxic organic pollutants, such as organic dyes and nitroaromatics, in various industrial applications has led to their leak into wastewater. The inability to remove these toxic pollutants, which are non-biodegradable and stable, from wastewater poses a threat to many living organisms, from human health to the environment. Therefore, the effective removal of these pollutants from water/wastewater is crucial. In this study, we designed heterogeneous catalyst system composed of palladium nanoparticles decorated on sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel beads reinforced with β-cyclodex

Cellulophaga algicola alginate lyase and Pseudomonas aeruginosa Psl glycoside hydrolase inhibit biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa CF2843 on three-dimensional aggregates of lung epithelial cells.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that produces a biofilm containing the polysaccharides, alginate, Psl, and Pel, and causes chronic lung infection in cystic fibrosis patients. Others and we have previously explored the use of alginate lyases in inhibiting P. aeruginosa biofilm formation on plastic and lung epithelial cell monolayers. We now employ a more physiologically representative model system, i.e., three-dimensional aggregates of A549 lung epithelial cells cultured under conditions of microgravity in a rotary cell culture system to mimic the natural lung environment, a

Macroporous Alginate-PEG Hybrid Double Network Cryogels: Tuning Mechanics, Porosity, and Long-Term Growth Factor Release via Polymer Concentration, Ice Nucleation, and Sulfation.

Cryogels are macroporous hydrogel scaffolds with promising applications in tissue engineering; however, conventional systems often suffer from inadequate mechanical strength, limited porosity, and biocompatibility concerns due to the use of free radical initiators and organic solvents. In this study, we report the engineering of a hybrid double-network (HDN) cryogel scaffold composed of alginate and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), designed for tissue engineering applications. The scaffolds were fabricated via simultaneous cross-linking of alginate and PEG networks at subzero temperatures using a

Development of calcium alginate gel sphere-based SERS substrates for minimally invasive sampling and identification of indigo on the surface of simulated murals and aged imitation cultural relic samples.

Pigments in painted cultural relics serve as critical historical evidence, offering significant research value for understanding historical contexts and cultural development processes. However, the pigments, especially organic pigments (or dyes), have progressively degraded over time, resulting in severe fading that challenges their sensitive identification. To address this issue, we developed an innovative sampling methodology combined with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) analysis for identifying indigo pigment in painted cultural relics. The methodology employs calcium alginate ge

Innovate sodium alginate microneedle patches integrated with soft lidocaine invasomes: advanced strategies for oral ulcerative mucositis treatment via TNF-α/NF-κB pathways.

Oral ulcerative mucositis (OUM) is a common painful disease that affects oral functions, such as eating or speaking leading to a low quality of life. This study aims to develop a novel strategy for relieving pain associated with OUM by using local anesthetics. Here, a hybrid dissolving microneedle patch integrated with lidocaine (Lido)-encapsulated invasomes (modified liposomes containing terpenes as penetration enhancers) depots are introduced for sustained Lido delivery, reduced dosing frequency, and improved patient compliance. Different Lido-loaded invasomes formulations were developed usi

A low-cost, antimicrobial aloe-alginate hydrogel film containing Australian First Nations remedy 'lemon myrtle oil' (Backhousia citriodora) - Potential for incorporation into wound dressings.

Chronic wounds pose a global public health challenge, particularly in remote settings where access to specialised wound care and dressings can be limited and cost-prohibitive. First Nations communities in Australia are at a significantly higher risk for developing chronic wounds and this risk further increases for people living in remote regions. There is an urgent need to develop inexpensive but effective wound dressings to improve wound outcomes. Over the past decade, sodium alginate (SA)-based hydrogel polymers have emerged as a cost-effective and biocompatible component in wound dressings,

Healing diabetic ulcers with chronic inflammation is a major challenge for researchers and professionals, necessitating new strategies. To rapidly treat diabetic wounds in rat models, we have fabricated a composite scaffold composed of alginate (Alg) and silk fibroin (SF) as a wound dressing that is laden with molecules of lithium chloride (LC). The physicochemical, bioactivity, and biocompatibility properties of Alg-SF-LC scaffolds were investigated in contrast to those of Alg, SF, and Alg-SF ones. Afterward, full-thickness wounds were ulcerated in diabetic rats in order to evaluate the capac

3D printed sodium alginate/gelatin/tannic acid/calcium chloride scaffolds laden bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells to repair defective thyroid cartilage plate.

Due to the absence of blood vessels, cartilage exhibits extremely limited self-repair capacity. Currently, repairing laryngeal cartilage defects, resulting from conditions such as laryngeal tumors, injury, and congenital structural abnormalities, remains a significant challenge in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Previous research has often focused on enhancing the mechanical properties of synthetic materials. However, their low biological activity and weak cell adhesion necessitate compensatory measures. This study aims to capitalize on the advantages of natural materi
