Human infants are able to combine visual and proprioceptive target information in reaching.

Actions are based on estimations about world and bodily states, which are derived from partially redundant noisy sensory signals. To reduce the impact of sensory noise, signals from various senses are combined in a Bayes optimal manner in adults. In children, multisensory integration has been typically found to be Bayes optimal from 8 to 10 years of age and beyond. Implication for early motor development might be that infants base their actions on only one sensory modality, or, potentially, infants do already combine the senses in some - though likely suboptimal - way. Here, 7-month-old infant

Molecular characterization and phylogeography of equine influenza virus H3N8 detected in donkeys in Nigeria 2022-2023.

BACKGROUND: Equine influenza virus (EIV) H3N8 is a highly contagious respiratory pathogen that poses significant health and economic risks to equids globally. In southeastern Nigeria where equids are sold and slaughtered, limited data exist on EIV epidemiology and circulating lineages. METHODS: To address this gap, an active surveillance was conducted between January 2022 and October 2023. A total of 400 nasal swabs were collected from horses and donkeys at slaughterhouses and animal markets. The swabs were screened for equine influenza virus (EIV) using quantitative Reverse-Transcription Pol

Physics informed machine learning for predictive toxicology and optimization of curcumin nanocarriers.

Curcumin's clinical utility is limited by poor bioavailability and dose-dependent toxicity. Although nano-encapsulation can address these shortcomings, rationally optimizing nanocarrier biosafety remains challenging due to the highly multidimensional design space. Here, we develop an interpretable Physics-Informed Machine Learning (PIML) framework that integrates experimental data from 75 curcumin nanocarriers with DLVO stability theory and drug-release kinetics to predict and optimize cytotoxicity. Among the evaluated models, XGBoost attained the highest statistical performance (R2 = 0.89), a

Comparative efficacy and safety of Chinese botanical drug injection in patients with sepsis: A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis represents a significant global health challenge, contributing to considerable morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Integrating Chinese botanical drug injections (CBDIs) with Western Medical Treatments (WMT) has been increasingly recognized for its enhanced therapeutic effects in sepsis management. This Bayesian network meta-analysis aims to identify the optimal combination regimen of CBDIs and WMT for sepsis therapy. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across eight electronic databases to identify Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) relevant to

Estimating diagnostic accuracy under uncertainty about disease status: a sepsis case study.

OBJECTIVES: Expert panels in diagnostic accuracy research typically classify the target condition dichotomously (ie, present or absent) for each study participant. This may however lead to biased accuracy estimates when experts are uncertain about this classification. Eliciting probabilistic estimates may provide a solution. METHODS: We compared three approaches for estimating index test diagnostic accuracy using probabilistic estimates on target condition presence from an expert panel: (i) dichotomous approach: forcing dichotomous target condition classification based on expert panel probabi

Reliability assessment of key equipment for coal gasification using artificial intelligence technology.

To address the gap in quantitatively modeling dynamic failure mechanisms for Gasifier lock bucket valve system reliability, this study proposes an innovative method: using backpropagation (BP) neural network to optimize the prior data of dynamic Bayesian network (DBN). Firstly, based on the empirical formula for the number of hidden layer neurons, the original DBN model of the system is adapted to a structurally adaptive BP neural network to calibrate its prior parameters, and the correspondence between the prior distribution of DBN and the input-output functions of the BP network is establishe

Improving the measurement of knowledge in multiple-choice tests: A hierarchical multinomial processing tree approach.

In multiple-choice (MC) tests, correct item responses can stem from actual mastery as well as from lucky guessing. Several approaches have been developed to address this problem, including the implementation of a "Don't know" option. However, scoring such MC tests is challenging, as traditional scoring techniques are differentially biased against certain response strategies. In this article, we propose a hierarchical multinomial processing tree (MPT) model that allows measuring the latent ability while taking into account the tendency to engage in guessing and the preference for a specific res

An Early Miocene ape from the biogeographic crossroads of African and Eurasian Hominoidea.

The Early Miocene fossil record documenting hominoid evolution has long been restricted primarily to sites in East Africa, whereas contemporaneous North African sites have only yielded remains of cercopithecoid monkeys. Here, we describe a fossil ape from North Africa, a new genus (Masripithecus) from the Early Miocene (~17 million to 18 million years) of northern Egypt, on the basis of mandibular remains. A combined molecular-morphological Bayesian tip-dating analysis positions Masripithecus closer to crown hominoids than coeval fossil apes from East Africa, thereby filling a phylogenetic and

Continuous multi-omics pathway enrichment analysis resolves hidden functional heterogeneity.

Pathway enrichment analysis is essential for extracting biological insights from complex omics datasets, yet existing methods suffer from critical limitations: excessive false discoveries, arbitrary significance thresholds, poor handling of multi-omics data, and inability to model gene dependencies. We present JOANA (Joint continuous multi-Omics enrichment ANAlysis), a novel Bayesian framework for pathway analysis with three key contributions. First, JOANA enables high specificity through continuous probabilistic modeling of significance scores using Beta mixture distributions, eliminating arb

Patterns of structural brain differences in cocaine use disorder: Integrating multilevel frequentist, Bayesian, and coordinate-based meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine Use Disorder (CUD) has been associated with differences in gray matter (GM) measures, but prior meta-analyses have yielded inconsistent results due to methodological variability, publication bias, and selective reporting. To address these gaps, this study integrates multilevel frequentist, Bayesian, and coordinate-based approaches to provide a comprehensive, anatomically resolved synthesis of structural neuroimaging findings in CUD. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD42024585260), 47 studies were included that compared GM indices between individuals with CU

Reliable leukemia detection via transfer-enhanced Bayesian CNNs.

Accurate and early detection of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is critical for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes. However, the development of reliable deep learning models for hematological image analysis is challenged by limited data availability, dataset bias, and the need for trustworthy predictions in clinical settings. In this study, we propose a Bayesian deep learning framework that integrates transfer learning, data augmentation, and uncertainty quantification for robust classification of leukemic and healthy lymphocytes from peripheral blood smear images. Engagement in alcohol-free activities, community-level economic disadvantage, and heavy drinking following alcohol treatment.

The reinforcer pathology model proposed by Warren Bickel and colleagues focuses on within-individual motivational processes involving overvaluation of smaller immediate rewards relative to larger delayed rewards (delay discounting) and high drug reinforcing value (drug demand) as determinants of unhealthy substance use. We propose an extension of this model to incorporate broader socioecological factors (e.g., community-level economic environment) that may influence reward preference. Using a secondary data analysis of 1,726 individuals enrolled in a randomized clinical trial for alcohol use d

Bayesian modelling demonstrates clinically relevant heterogeneity in Tau PET patterns in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, subgroups have been used to explore the effects of tau heterogeneity on cognition. However, categorization into rigid, exclusive subtypes, each with their own tau pattern, may overlook the fact that individual tau patterns are complex, and most individuals express features of multiple patterns. Mapping tau patterns in all their complexity has important clinical implications, as it may enable more accurate prognostication and support the development of personalized therapeutic strategies tailored to an individual’s unique tau profile. METHODS: We applied a data-driven

Generalizing the Prevalence Threshold Under Prevalence-Dependent Diagnostic Accuracy.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: When a diagnostic test returns a positive result, the probability that the patient truly has the condition depends on how common the condition is in the population being tested. The prevalence threshold marks the point on that relationship below which a positive result stops being trustworthy. Its familiar closed form assumes that sensitivity and specificity stay fixed as the population changes, yet large empirical surveys of the diagnostic literature show that measured accuracy shifts systematically with prevalence, because prevalence acts as a marker for diffe

Disruption of winter influenza activity in Wuxi, China during and after the COVID-19 pandemic (2013-2025): a counterfactual time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) altered the circulation of respiratory viruses, and influenza activity declined worldwide during 2020-2022. However, the magnitude of these disruptions and their post-pandemic effects on epidemic dynamics remain insufficiently characterized. METHODS: We analyzed weekly influenza surveillance data from 2013 to 2025 in Wuxi, eastern China. We constructed a composite influenza activity index using principal component analysis (PCA). We then trained a Bayesian structural time series (BSTS) model on pre-pandem

Individual and joint associations of PM2.5 components with the mumps incidence: based on quantile g-computation and Bayesian kernel machine regression.

Total PM2.5 mass has been shown to be associated with mumps. However, the individual and joint associations of PM2.5 components with mumps and the importance of each PM2.5 component remain unclear. To our knowledge, this ecological study is the first to investigate the associations of PM2.5 components with mumps. We collected the monthly mumps incidence in Northwest China from 2013 to 2019 to investigate the individual and joint effects of PM2.5 components on mumps using geographical probes, quantile g-computation (qgcomp), and Bayesian kernel-machine regression (BKMR) models. We found that su

Viral introductions and return to baseline sexual behaviors maintain low-level mpox incidence in Los Angeles.

In 2022, mpox clade IIb disseminated around the world, causing outbreaks in more than 117 countries. Despite the decay of the 2022 epidemic and the increased immunity within sexual networks, mpox continues to persist in North America without extinction, raising concerns of future outbreaks. We combined phylodyamic inference and microsimulation modeling to understand the heterogeneous dynamics governing local mpox persistence in Los Angeles County (LAC) from 2023 to 2024. Our Bayesian phylodynamic analysis revealed a time-varying pattern of viral importations into the county, which seeded mpox

County-level spatiotemporal patterns, forecasting, and non-fatal burden of human brucellosis in Hulunbuir, China, 2016-2025.

BACKGROUND: Human brucellosis remains an important zoonotic public health problem in northern China, especially in pastoral and agro-pastoral areas. County-level evidence is needed to distinguish large absolute service burden from high population-adjusted risk and to support seasonal preparedness. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective surveillance-based county-level analysis integrating descriptive epidemiology, population-adjusted spatial analysis, Bayesian smoothing, short-term forecasting, and approximate non-fatal burden estimation. County-level population denominators were available for

Geospatial codistribution of tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) co-morbidity is a growing public health challenge, particularly in Indonesia, where TB incidence remains high and DM prevalence is increasing. DM co-morbidity is known to increase the risk of TB incidence and have negative effects on TB treatment outcomes. This study aims to analyze the geographical co-distribution of TB and DM and their sociodemographic determinants in Indonesia, to help inform public health response and targeting of screening programs. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), a nationally repr
