Chylous ascites in neonates is an unusual and etiologically poor understood entity. Our first case was a female newborn who suffered from ab … bstructing the lymphatic flow; but no such lesion could be found. She expired at 1 year of age with chylothorax, chylopericardium and lobar pneumonia. The second case, a 37-day-old male baby, who was admitted because of right inguinal hernia. Milky ascitic fluid in the abdomen was incidentally found during herniorrhaphy. Analysis of the fluid revealed protein …

PURPOSE: This case report highlights a rare but fatal complication of artificial enteral nutrition due to feeding tube misplacement, leading to pleural effusion and respiratory failure. The primary objective was to determine whether enteral nutrition formula leakage contributed to the patient's death and to differentiate the pleural effusion from other possible etiologies, such as chylothorax.
METHODS: A 59-year-old male patient with severe lung disease underwent left-sided partial lung resection and subsequently received enteral nutrition via a nasogastric feeding tube. After suspected feedi…

Lymphatic fistula is a rare surgical complication, which mainly occurs after cervical or retroperitoneal lymph node dissection and which frequently requires a surgical repair. A small series of nine postoperative lymphatic fistulas treated conservatively with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is reported. All the patients were malnourished at the beginning of the TPN, and all exhibited an objective improvement of their nutritional status after completion of the treatment. Due to the interruption of the enteral alimentation or to the nutritional repletion, spontaneous closure of the fistula was

Postoperative complications were infrequent and comparable; chylothorax occurred in 2 lobectomy cases and 1 lung-preserving case, all treated conservatively. There was no recurrence of symptoms or residual lesions on imaging at a median follow-up of 7.5 months.
CONCLUSIONS: Lung-preserving surgery appears to be a safe …

We describe a 78-year-old initially presenting with left breast cancer, status post mastectomy and bilateral dual-lumen breast implant placement, subsequently developed lung cancer years later status post lobectomy, who later developed FDG-avid pleural nodularity and thickening. The differential diagnosis of pleural thickening and nodularity can be broad, including metastatic cancer, asbestos-related pleural disease, loculated fluid (including simple pleural effusion, hemothorax, or chylothorax), and pleural infection. However, in the setting of two different primary malignancies, our patient'…

PURPOSE: This paper introduces a novel technique, cervical lymphangiogram, involving intranodal lymphangiogram through cervical lymph nodes. We will discuss our preliminary experience regarding the technique, safety, and applications, offering a promising approach to addressing central conducting duct opacification challenges.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was IRB exempt. All patients failed conservative management for treatment of chylous effusion. Patients who underwent cervical lymphangiogram as either diagnostic or therapeutic process were included. All patients were imag

Fetal anomalies such as lower urinary tract obstructions and fluid-filled space-occupying lesions in the fetal chest can result in severe morbidity or mortality if left untreated. In-utero fetal shunt placement offers the potential to improve outcomes in infants with these conditions. The role of the nurse is paramount in the clinical and psychosocial management of the mother and family.

In recent years, a higher and higher percentage of patients with pleural effusions or pneumothorax are being treated with small-bore (10-14 F) chest tubes rather than large-bore (>20 F). However, there are very few randomized controlled studies comparing the efficacy and complication rates with the small- and large-bore catheters. Moreover, the randomized trials that are available have flaws in their design. The advantages of the small-bore catheters are that they are easier to insert and there is less pain with their insertion while they are in place. The placement of the small-bore catheters

The thoracic duct along with the cisterna chyli is a major lymphatic pathway near the anterior thoracolumbar spine. Despite the fragile nature of the lymphatic system and its proximity to the spinal column, chylorrhea is rarely encountered by spine surgeons. The authors present a unique case of chylorrhea associated with a left thoracoscopic, transdiaphragmatic discectomy and fusion for a T12-L1 herniated disc. The anomalous location of the thoracic duct at the left lateral vertebral column contributes to this unusual complication.
