Assessment of seasonality in antimicrobial susceptibility testing and resistance of urinary Escherichia coli from dogs and cats in the United States (2019 - 2022).

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant global health challenge, impacting humans, animals, and the environment. Dogs and cats are vulnerable to urinary tract infections (UTIs), mostly caused by antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli, necessitating antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) for optimal treatment. This study investigated and evaluated the seasonality of AST and AMR in urinary E. coli isolates from dogs and cats in the USA and evaluated the potential influence of climatic zones on these patterns. Retrospective data from IDEXX Laboratories, from January 2019 to Decem

Physiological constraints on heat adaptation in birds.

Rising global temperatures and compound climatic extremes outpace avian thermoregulatory capacity. Yet, heat tolerance has been studied in only 1-2% of birds, mostly from the southern subtropics. The field requires research in two main areas. First, temperature and humidity must be considered in unison, and we provide a guiding, biophysical, framework for how these factors interact across climates. Second, we need experiments integrating ecology, evolution, and physiology. To that end, we introduce a life-history model relating thermoregulatory effort and the accumulation of heat-related damag

Evaluating carbon removal: Integrating technical potential with environmental, social, governance criteria, and sequestration permanence.

Climate modeling suggests that achieving international climate goals requires a reduction in current CO2 emissions by over 90%, with any remaining emissions to be addressed through carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions. Sixteen CDR strategies are evaluated by integrating technical potential, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, along with sequestration permanence. This evaluation, conducted by ENGIE's scientific council using an interdisciplinary Delphi panel methodology, proposes a "quality" measure for each technology. This measure combines ESG scores and sequestration time

Advancing circular economy in the water-energy-food nexus: A framework for sustainable resource use.

This study presents a transformative approach to achieving near-zero CO2 emissions in a fossil fuel-based industrial region by integrating circular economy (CE) principles with water-energy-food (WEF) nexus optimization. Utilizing a linear optimization model in the OSeMOSYS software, the study simulates the Climate-Land-Water-Energy nexus, considering population growth, rapid industrialization, and climate change. The findings indicate that achieving near-zero CO2 emissions, by reducing annual emissions from 4 million tons to 0.4 million tons, requires a combination of Carbon Capture, Utilizat

Temporal and spatial analysis of hand, foot, and mouth disease in relation to climate factors: A study in the Mekong Delta region, Vietnam.

This study examined the temporal and spatial patterns of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in the Mekong Delta region in Vietnam. A time-series analysis was used to examine the temporal patterns of HFMD in relation to climate factors while a retrospective space-time scan was used to detect the high-risk space-time clusters of this disease. A 1°C increase in average temperature was associated with 5.6% increase in HFMD rate at lag 5days (95% CI 0.3-10.9). A 1% increase in humidity had equal influence of 1.7% increases on HFMD rate at both lag 3days and 6days (95% CI 0.7-2.7 and 95% CI 0.8-2.

Effects of landscape fragmentation and climate on Lyme disease incidence in the northeastern United States.

Lyme disease is the most frequently reported vector borne illness in the United States, and incidences are increasing steadily year after year. This study explores the influence of landscape (e.g., land use pattern and landscape fragmentation) and climatic factors (e.g., temperature and precipitation) at a regional scale on Lyme disease incidence. The study area includes thirteen states in the Northeastern United States. Lyme disease incidence at county level for the period of 2002-2006 was linked with several key landscape and climatic variables in a negative binomial regression model. Result

Changes in vegetation in northern Alaska under scenarios of climate change, 2003-2100: implications for climate feedbacks.

Assessing potential future changes in arctic and boreal plant species productivity, ecosystem composition, and canopy complexity is essential for understanding environmental responses under expected altered climate forcing. We examined potential changes in the dominant plant functional types (PFTs) of the sedge tundra, shrub tundra, and boreal forest ecosystems in ecotonal northern Alaska, USA, for the years 2003-2100. We compared energy feedbacks associated with increases in biomass to energy feedbacks associated with changes in the duration of the snow-free season. We based our simulations o

A real-time mechanistic framework for early inference of chikungunya transmission and outbreak sizes in mainland France, 2025.

In 2025, mainland France experienced an unprecedented chikungunya outbreak in Europe, likely associated with suitable climatic conditions and established presence of Aedes albopictus, the primary European vector of chikungunya virus (CHIKV). During the early phase of the outbreak (May-July 2025), when only limited case data were available, public health decision-making required rapid situational assessment under substantial uncertainty. Here, we apply a state-of-art, climate-sensitive eco-epidemiological modelling framework to infer transmission dynamics in real-time and to characterise early

Mapping agricultural fragility in India through a yield gap vulnerability framework: a national-scale machine learning assessment.

In India, regional yield gaps continue to widen despite increased agricultural productivity, owing to socioeconomic inequality and climate variability. This study develops a novel Yield Gap Vulnerability (YGV) framework to measure agricultural fragility at the district-level by integrating agricultural, hydrological, meteorological, and socioeconomic indicators to observed yield gaps for major cereals (rice and wheat) and nutri-crops (maize and millet). An integrated Machine Learning (ML) approach is used that can support sustainable agricultural management, spatial planning, and risk reductio

Current impacts of elevated CO2 on crop nutritional quality: a review using wheat as a case study.

This review synthesises current research findings and modelling approaches to explore the impact of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO2) concentrations on crop productivity, water and nutrient use efficiency, plant nutritional quality, and the implications for global food security. Over recent decades, rising atmospheric CO2 levels have sparked significant concern due to their role in driving climate change. While some studies highlight the potential benefits of eCO2, such as increased crop yields and improved water-use efficiency, many recent investigations reveal a concerning decline i

The contribution of China's emissions to global climate forcing.

Knowledge of the contribution that individual countries have made to global radiative forcing is important to the implementation of the agreement on "common but differentiated responsibilities" reached by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Over the past three decades, China has experienced rapid economic development, accompanied by increased emission of greenhouse gases, ozone precursors and aerosols, but the magnitude of the associated radiative forcing has remained unclear. Here we use a global coupled biogeochemistry-climate model and a chemistry and transport model

Flux Footprints: A Critical Link to Bridge Eddy-Covariance Measurements With Models, Remote Sensing, and Other Observations.

Global networks of eddy-covariance flux towers play a pivotal role in enhancing our predictive understanding of carbon and water cycling of biological systems in response to regional and global environmental change. Despite their broad application in numerous studies, the spatial aspects of the flux measurements have often been ignored or treated ambiguously, thereby remaining a primary source of uncertainty. The area contributing to the flux-referred to as the flux footprint-varies over time depending on wind direction, atmospheric turbulence, effective measurement heights, surface characteri
