A novel method for the topographic analysis of neural activity reveals formation and dissolution of 'Dynamic Cell Assemblies'.

The study of synchronous oscillations in neural systems is a very active area of research. However, cognitive function may depend more cruci … between consecutive synchronous epochs may reflect important aspects of information processing and cognitive flexibility.

[Memory training: an important constituent of milieu therapy in senile dementia].

At the Memory Clinic in Basel we provide long-term memory training as part of our "milieu therapy". Mildly demented elderly out-patients attend weekly group sessions of 60 min for a special semistructured memory training. The goal is to relearn and practice strategies which help to preserve or extend the phase of autonomy and thus life quality and self-esteem. In several studies we tested the efficiency of the training on mood, global mental status, short-term memory, cognitive flexibility, and quality of life by comparing the performance of groups of patients attending the memory training to …

The physiology of mental representations: from single neurons to circuits.

Mental representations enable the brain to transcend the immediacy of sensory input and operate on internal models of the world. Working memory (WM) provides the neural substrate that maintains, manipulates, and accesses these representations over behaviorally relevant timescales. Early studies identified persistent neuronal activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) as a key mechanism supporting WM, arising from specialized recurrent microcircuits in which excitatory and inhibitory interactions sustain information in the absence of external stimulation. Subsequent research has rev

Neuroimaging Examination of Driving Mode Switching Corresponding to Changes in the Driving Environment.

Car driving is supported by perceptual, cognitive, and motor skills trained through continuous daily practice. One of the skills that characterize experienced drivers is to detect changes in the driving environment and then flexibly switch their driving modes in response to the changes. Previous functional neuroimaging studies on motor control investigated the mechanisms underlying behaviors adaptive to changes in control properties or parameters of experimental devices such as a computer mouse or a joystick. The switching of multiple internal models mainly engages adaptive behaviors and under

A flexible sequential learning deficit in patients with Parkinson's disease: a 2 x 8 button-press task.

A 2 x 8 button-press task is a sequential hand movement task in which subjects are required to press eight pairs of buttons as accurately and quickly as possible. The 2 x 8 task allows us to examine flexible sequential learning, more aptly called sequence-unselective learning. Sequence-unselective learning is observed after repeated experiences with the task, when subjects have shown good progress in learning, with new sequences as well as previously learned ones. Although cognitive inflexibility has been reported in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), there have been few studies investiga

The selective D3-Receptor antagonist VK4-116 effectively treats behavioral inflexibility in rats caused by self-administration and withdrawal from cocaine.

Chronic psychostimulant use can cause long lasting changes to neural and cognitive function that persist even after long periods of abstinence. As cocaine users transition from drug use to abstinence, a parallel transition from hyperactivity to hypoactivity has been found in orbitofrontal-striatal glucose metabolism, and striatal D2/D3 receptor activity. Targeting these changes pharmacologically, using highly selective dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) antagonists and partial agonists, has shown significant promise in reducing drug-taking, and attenuating relapse in animal models of cocaine and opioi

A Promise Without Panacea: Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Modern Psychiatry.

Psychedelic-assisted therapies have re-emerged as a subject of increasing scientific and clinical interest in psychiatry, particularly in the context of persistent treatment gaps for conditions such as treatment-resistant depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders. Compounds, including psilocybin and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, are being evaluated in controlled clinical trials and have demonstrated promising therapeutic effects when administered within structured psychotherapeutic frameworks. Emerging neurobiological evidence suggests that these agents may p

Dissociation of implicit and explicit knowledge in a case of psychogenic retrograde amnesia.

There have been few studies of psychogenic amnesia based on a cognitive or neuropsychological framework. In the present study, a patient with acute onset of profound psychogenic retrograde amnesia was examined. Although her performance on neuropsychological tasks revealed intact anterograde memory, language functioning, visuospatial and constructional skills, and mental speed and flexibility, she displayed severe impairments on a variety of retrograde memory tasks. Furthermore, initial observations revealed inconsistencies between the patient's recall of semantic knowledge on direct questionin

Emotion regulation variability and chronic pain: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Chronic pain is a significant public health problem associated with increased healthcare utilization and decreased quality of life. Mechanistic research focused on identifying vulnerabilities for the experience and impact of chronic pain is of critical importance to understanding and managing this public health burden. Emotion regulation, a cognitive-affective process involving attempts to influence the type, timing, and intensity of emotions has been linked to pain experience across multiple studies. Yet, conceptualizations have often focused on "adaptive" vs. "maladaptive" regulatory strateg

Materials and Methods: Sixty-three inpatients diagnosed with OCD were randomly divided into ACT group (N = 32) and rTMS group (N = 31), both of which were combined with sertraline hydrochloride. The following assessments were completed by the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA),

Beyond words: a Reflexive Thematic analysis of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in immersive art experiences for cultural minorities in Germany.

Immigrants in Germany experience elevated rates of mental health challenges, often stemming from identity confusion and acculturative stress. Addressing the critical shortage of culturally sensitive mental health services, this study investigates the efficacy of integrating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into an immersive art exhibition as a low-intensity intervention. Ten young adult immigrants residing in Bremen participated in a four-station audiovisual experience designed to physically manifest ACT principles: Creative Hopelessness (process of recognizing controlling experiences l

Marr's ghost.

David Marr's tri-level analysis has organized cognitive neuroscience for four decades. We argue that it has also constrained it. The framework rests on three assumptions: that cognitive goals can be specified a priori, that neural processes implement algorithms, and that physical substrates are interchangeable realizers of abstract functions. Each assumption was defensible in 1982. Each is now demonstrably false. Slime molds, planarian flatworms, bioelectric networks in non-neural tissue, and degenerate neural circuits pose a dilemma the framework cannot resolve: either extend computational de

A unified approach for identifying PET-based neuronal activation and molecular connectivity with the functional PET toolbox.

Functional PET (fPET) identifies stimulation-specific changes of physiological processes, individual molecular connectivity and group-level molecular covariance. Since there is currently no consistent analysis approach available for these techniques, we present a toolbox for unified fPET assessment. The toolbox supports analysis of data obtained with a variety of radiotracers, scanners, experimental protocols, cognitive tasks and species. It includes general linear model (GLM)-based assessment of task-specific effects, percent signal change and absolute quantification, and data-driven independ

Lysergic acid diethylamide-derived excitatory/inhibitory ratio change enhances global synchrony in functional brain dynamics.

Alterations to cognitive abilities and functional networks in rats post broad-band intense noise exposure.

This study aimed to investigate the alterations of cognition and functional connectivity post noise, and find the progress and neural substrates of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL)-associated cognitive impairment. We exposed rats to 122 dB broad-band noise for 2 h to induce hearing loss and the auditory function was assessed by measuring auditory brainstem response thresholds. Morris water maze test and resting state MRI were computed at 0 day, 1, 3, 6 months post noise to reveal cognitive ability and neural substrate. The interregional connections in the auditory network and default mode net
