Experimental study on the mechanical properties of pediatric porcine brain tissue and calibration of the transversely isotropic hyperelastic constitutive model using two methods.

Although many studies have investigated the mechanical properties of the adult brain, data specific to pediatric brains-particularly those of infants and toddlers-are scarce due to ethical limitations. In this study, 4-week-old piglet brain tissue was used as a suitable proxy for infant and toddler brains in tension and compression tests to assess the directional and regional effects. The white matter demonstrated anisotropy in tension, with higher stress observed along the axonal fibers compared to perpendicular loading. Regionally, white matter exhibited higher stress than gray matter, while

Smartphone based clinical decision support system for early detection of neonatal jaundice using artificial intelligence with temporal convolutional network.

Physiological jaundice is present in the initial week of life in neonates owing to the rise in level of bilirubin thereby resulting in yellowish coloring of sclera and skin. Severe jaundice and lethal bilirubin levels may result from brain damage as bilirubin is located in the central nervous system. Present diagnostic techniques consist of time-consuming and a painful invasive blood test and non-invasive tests using expensive transcutaneous bilirubin meters. Then regular monitoring is important, numerous efforts are conducted to progress non-invasive devices for testing utilizing a smartphone

Computational methods, clinical evidence, and translational readiness for artificial intelligence for HER2 assessment using silver in situ hybridization (SISH).

Accurate determination of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) gene amplification is a cornerstone of precision oncology in breast cancer and an expanding range of solid tumors. While immunohistochemistry (IHC) remains the first-line screening modality, in situ hybridization (ISH) techniques are essential for resolving equivocal cases and providing quantitative assessment of HER2 gene status. Among ISH methods, silver-enhanced in situ hybridization (SISH) has emerged as a clinically relevant bright-field alternative to fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), offering permanent st

QSPR analysis of physico-chemical and pharmacological properties of medications for Parkinson's treatment utilizing neighborhood degree-based topological descriptors.

Topological indices are invariant quantitative metrics associated with a molecular graph, which characterize the bonding topology of a molecule. The main aim of analyzing topological indices is to summarize and transform chemical structural information, thus creating a mathematical relationship between structures and their physico-chemical properties, biological activities, and other experimental characteristics. Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships (QSPR) and Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships (QSAR) utilize topological indices to correlate diverse molecular properties, in

Modeling radon progeny deposition and dose in human airways using CFD: Effects of respiratory patterns and environmental variables.

Radon progeny inhalation poses a significant public health risk as radioactive particles deposit throughout the respiratory tract, delivering alpha radiation directly to lung tissues and representing the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. This study presents a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of radon progeny transport in anatomically realistic human airways with detailed dosimetric calculations. A validated CFD model was developed using SolidWorks and ANSYS Fluent to simulate airflow and particle trajectories from the trachea through the bronchioles.

Estimation and comparison of the effective dose and lifetime attributable risk of thyroid cancer between males and females in routine head computed tomography scans: a multicentre study.

INTRODUCTION: A significant number of head computed tomography (CT) scans are performed annually. However, due to the close proximity of the thyroid gland to the radiation field, this procedure can expose the gland to ionising radiation. Consequently, this study aimed to estimate organ dose, effective dose (ED) and lifetime attributable risk (LAR) of thyroid cancer from head CT scans in adults. METHODS: Head CT scans of 74 patients (38 males and 36 females) were collected using three different CT scanners. Age, sex, and scanning parameters, including scan length, tube current-time product (mA

Brain Mechanisms Explaining Postural Imbalance in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Persisting imbalance and falls in community-dwelling traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors are linked to reduced long-term survival. However, a detailed understanding of the impact of TBI upon the brain mechanisms mediating imbalance is lacking. To understand the state of the art concerning the brain mechanisms mediating imbalance in TBI, we performed a systematic review of the literature. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched and peer-reviewed research articles in humans, with any severity of TBI (mild, moderate, severe, or concussion), which linked a postur

Prognostic bone fracture healing simulations in an ovine tibia model validated with in vivo sensors.

Bone fracture healing is a complex physiological process influenced by biomechanical and biomolecular factors. Mechanical stability is crucial for successful healing, and disruptions can lead to delayed healing or nonunion. Bone commonly heals itself through secondary fracture healing, which is governed by the mechanical strain at the fracture site. To investigate these phenomena, a validated methodology for capturing the mechanoregulatory process in specimen-specific models of fracture healing could provide insight into the healing process. This study implemented a prognostic healing simulati

Precision Drug Repurposing: A Deep Learning Toolkit for Identifying 34 Hyperpigmentation-Associated Genes and Optimizing Treatment Selection.

BACKGROUND: Hyperpigmentation is a skin disorder characterized by a localized darkening of the skin due to increased melanin production. When patients fail first line topical treatments, secondary treatments such as chemical peels and lasers are offered. However, these interventions are not devoid of risks and are associated with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. In the quest for novel therapeutic potentials, this study aims to investigate computational methods in the identification of new targeted therapies in the treatment of hyperpigmentation. METHODS: We used a comprehensive approach, w

RFMiD: Retinal Image Analysis for multi-Disease Detection challenge.

In the last decades, many publicly available large fundus image datasets have been collected for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, and a few other frequent pathologies. These publicly available datasets were used to develop a computer-aided disease diagnosis system by training deep learning models to detect these frequent pathologies. One challenge limiting the adoption of a such system by the ophthalmologist is, computer-aided disease diagnosis system ignores sight-threatening rare pathologies such as central retinal artery occlusion or anterior ischemic op

A concept for anisotropic PTV margins including rotational setup uncertainties and its impact on the tumor control probability in canine brain tumors.

Objective. In this modelling study, we pursued two main goals. The first was to establish a new CTV-to-PTV expansion which considers the closest and most critical organ at risk (OAR). The second goal was to investigate the impact of the planning target volume (PTV) margin size on the tumor control probability (TCP) and its dependence on the geometrical setup uncertainties. The aim was to achieve a smaller margin expansion close to the OAR while allowing a moderately larger expansion in less critical areas further away from the OAR and whilst maintaining the TCP.Approach.Imaging data of radiatio

Identification of new small molecule monoamine oxidase-B inhibitors through pharmacophore-based virtual screening, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation studies.

The discovery of a safe and efficacious drug is a complex, time-consuming, and expensive process. Computational methodologies driven by cheminformatics tools play a central role in the high-throughput lead discovery and optimization process especially when the structure of the biological target is known. Monoamine oxidases are the membrane-bound FAD-containing enzymes and the isoform monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) is an attractive target for treating diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, glioma, etc. In the current study, we have used a pharmacophore-based virtual screening tech

Computational method for aid in the diagnosis of sixth optic nerve palsy through digital videos.

The sixth cranial nerve, also known as the abducens nerve, is responsible for controlling the movements of the lateral rectus muscle. Palsies on the sixth nerve prevent some muscles that control eye movements from proper functioning, causing headaches, migraines, blurred vision, vertigo, and double vision. Hence, such palsy should be diagnosed in the early stages to treat it without leaving any sequela. The usual methods for diagnosing the sixth nerve palsy are invasive or depend on expensive equipment, and computer-based methods designed specifically to diagnose the aforementioned palsy were

Mapping cortical disease-burden at individual-level in frontotemporal dementia: implications for clinical care and pharmacological trials.

Imaging studies of FTD typically present group-level statistics between large cohorts of genetically, molecularly or clinically stratified patients. Group-level statistics are indispensable to appraise unifying radiological traits and describe genotype-associated signatures in academic studies. However, in a clinical setting, the primary objective is the meaningful interpretation of imaging data from individual patients to assist diagnostic classification, inform prognosis, and enable the assessment of progressive changes compared to baseline scans. In an attempt to address the pragmatic deman
