Traumatic sacral dermoid cyst rupture with intracranial subarachnoid seeding of lipid particles: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial deposits of fat droplets are an unusual presentation of a spinal dermoid cyst after spontaneous rupture and are even more uncommon after trauma. Here, the authors present a case with this rare clinical presentation, along with a systematic review of the literature to guide decision making in these patients. OBSERVATIONS: A 54-year-old woman with Lynch syndrome presented with severe headache and sacrococcygeal pain after a traumatic fall. Computed tomography of the head revealed multifocal intraventricular and intracisternal fat deposits, which were confirmed by magnet

Olfactory colloid cyst.

Colloid cysts are rare intracerebral lesions that are predominantly located in the third ventricle. Extraventricular colloid cysts have only rarely been reported but so far there are no reports of a colloid cyst residing in the olfactory groove. A 74-year-old patient underwent a brain computed tomography scan for a mild head trauma that incidentally revealed a space-occupying lesion near the olfactory groove. Brain magnetic resonance imaging that ensued demonstrated a hyperintense lesion in T1, T2, and FLAIR sequences, without evidence of surrounding brain edema. To evaluate the metabolic stat

Pituitary Adenoma with Cholesterol Clefts.

Histologically, cholesterol clefts are often observed in craniopharyngioma, Rathke's cleft cyst, and various granulomas. However, pituitary adenomas with cholesterol clefts are rare. A 46-year-old woman developed visual field disturbance. She had no history of severe headache that would suggest pituitary apoplexy. She presented with homonymous bitemporal hemianopsia and galactorrhea. Blood prolactin level was 63.1 ng/mL Other hypophysial hormone levels were within normal range. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pituitary tumor with intratumoral cyst. The cyst showed high intensity on T1- a

Role of Indwelling Pleural Catheters in Recurrent Exudative Pleural Effusions and Liver Cysts: A Case Report.

Unilateral exudative pleural effusions have been described as a rare complication of polycystic liver disease. Surgical debridement of the main cyst reduces recurrence of the pleural effusion. We describe the case of an elderly Asian woman with recurrent large right-sided pleural effusion and also a large hepatic cyst under her right hemidiaphragm. She was deemed a poor surgical candidate and was treated with an indwelling pleural catheter (IPC). She was discharged from Sengkang General Hospital with improvement in symptoms. An 88-year-old Asian woman presented twice to Sengkang General Hospit

Bilateral Geyser Sign Secondary to Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease: A Rare Presentation.

The Geyser Sign (GS) is a rare imaging sign characterized by synovial fluid leakage through a full-thickness rotator cuff tear into the subacromial bursa and acromioclavicular joint (ACJ), resulting in capsular distension and cyst formation. We report the case of a 72-year-old man who presented with bilateral shoulder pain and a firm and compressible swelling over both ACJs with marked inflammatory signs. Radiographs demonstrated ACJ soft-tissue swelling, degenerative changes of the glenohumeral joint (GHJ) and ACJ, and features of chronic rotator cuff arthropathy. Computed tomography revealed

A case report of simple mucinous cyst of pancreas detected by rupture.

INTRODUCTION: Simple mucinous cyst (SMC) of pancreas is a disease defined by the Baltimore Consensus in 2014. Pancreatic mucus-producing neoplasms are considered to be premalignant tumors, but SMC is not considered to have a risk of malignancy or recurrence. PRESENTATION OF CASE: The case was a woman in her 50s with a chief complaint of abdominal pain. A blood exam showed an increase in the inflammatory response, and a slight increase of Amylase. CT showed a cystic lesion 80 mm in size at tail of the pancreas, and disproportionate fat stranding and ascites around it. We diagnosed peritonitis

Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis in ADPKD.

Increased tubular epithelial cell proliferation with fluid secretion is a key hallmark of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). With disruption of either PKD1 or PKD2, the main causative genes of ADPKD, intracellular calcium homeostasis and cAMP accumulation are disrupted, which in turn leads to altered signaling in the pathways that regulate cell proliferation. These dysregulations finally stimulate the development of fluid-filled cysts originating from abnormally proliferating renal tubular cells. In addition, dysregulated apoptosis is observed in dilated cystic tubules. An i

Transnasal and Transoral Approaches to Atlantoaxial Synovial Cysts: Report of 3 Cases and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Synovial cysts are cystic masses lined with pseudostratified columnar cells and containing clear or xanthochromic fluid. Although they are commonly encountered in the lumbar spine, synovial cysts infrequently occur in the cervical spine and rarely involve the odontoid process. The causes of synovial cysts of the odontoid process are unknown, but growth of synovial rests, proliferation of multipotent mesenchymal cells, atlantoaxial instability, and trauma are thought to play a role. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present 3 cases of atlantoaxial cysts with the associated radiographic features

Do tumor and ventricular volume predict the need for postresection shunting in colloid cyst patients?

OBJECTIVE Many colloid cyst patients present with obstructive hydrocephalus that resolves after resection of the cyst. However, a proportion of patients with these cysts will require cerebrospinal fluid shunting after tumor resection, despite resolution of the obstruction at the foramina of Monro. The goal of this study was to determine if colloid cyst size or preoperative ventricular volume predicted the need for postresection shunting. METHODS In a retrospective study design, ICD-9 codes 742.2 (colloid cyst) and 348.0 (brain cyst) were used to identify patients who had undergone resection of

Traumatic rupture of an isolated splenic hydatid cyst: a rare and challenging surgical emergency.

Isolated splenic hydatidosis is a rare manifestation of Echinococcus granulosus infection, accounting for ~0.5%-4% of reported cases. Although often asymptomatic, cyst rupture is an uncommon but severe complication that may result in life-threatening systemic reactions, frequently precipitated by trauma. A 65-year-old Saudi male with type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension presented with acute epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, and low-grade fever one week after minor trauma. He was hypotensive with a tender, non-peritonitic abdomen, and elevated inflammatory markers. Contrast-enhanced compu

Papillary Cystadenofibroma of the Epididymis: A Case Report.

To date, only 1 example of cystadenofibroma of the epididymis has been reported in the English literature. Here, we present a second cystadenofibroma originating from the epididymis of a 54-year-old man who presented with painful swelling in the scrotum. The scrotal mass measured 6.3 cm and contained a clear yellow, serous to gelatinous fluid-filled cyst with internal papillae. Microscopically, the mass contained both stromal and epithelial components. The stromal component consisted of spindle cells arranged in small intervening fascicles, forming simple cyst and papillae. The cyst and papill

Chylous mesenteric cyst in children -A case report in a 4-year-old boy.

Chylous mesenteric cyst is a very rare case, with some vague clinical findings, and it is hard to establish the diagnosis before surgery. The most common complaints post-surgery are abdominal pain and abdominal distention. We report a case of chylous mesenteric cyst in a 4-year-old boy with chief complaint of a lump in the abdomen. Preoperative abdominal ultrasound study could not identify the origin of the mass, and suspected it as a tuberculous peritonitis. A repeat ultrasound examination revealed a multicystic mass, suspected as lymphangioma. From the exploratory laparotomy, we noted a gian

Surgical management of a large retinal cyst in X-linked retinoschisis with internal drainage: Report of an unusual case.

Although X-linked retinoschisis is a common retinal degeneration condition, the presence of a large retinal cyst obscuring the visual axis in an infant is a rare presentation. Herein, we describe such a case of a child who presented to us with the diagnosis of retinal detachment in both the eyes. However, following multimodal imaging and electrophysiology, the child was found to have bilateral juvenile retinoschisis with a large retinoschisis cyst involving the visual axis seen intraoperatively in the left eye. A limbal approach followed by lensectomy was used to excise the inner retinal layer

Case Report: Sudden death related to unrecognized cardiac hydatid cyst.

Echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is a common parasitic human infestation found in sheep-breeding areas. It is caused by the larvae stage of Echinococcus granulosus, and cysts develop mostly in the lungs and the liver. Cardiac involvement is unusual and silent until acute complications or a fatal outcome occurs. Herein, we report an autopsy case of a young healthy adult who died suddenly. The autopsy revealed an external bulging on the right heart ventricle outlet with a fluid-filled cystic cavity discovered on sectioning. Dissection of other organs did not reveal other cyst locat

Lymphocele Following Liposuction in the Thigh.

UNLABELLED: Lymphocele has not been reported as a complication after liposuction. In this study, we present the case of a patient who developed a cystic lesion after liposuction in her right thigh. The cyst could contract and evolve. The diagnosis of pseudobursa seroma (late seroma) was first considered. However, lymphoscintigraphy showed that lymphatic fluid accumulated in the cyst, and lymphatic vessel connected with it. The final diagnose was a lymphocele. After interventional therapy and conservative treatment failed, the lymphocele was resected. The subcutaneous soft tissue around the cys

microRNA biomarkers in cystic diseases.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression by targeting the 3'-untranslated region of multiple target genes. Pathogenesis results from defects in several gene sets; therefore, disease progression could be prevented using miRNAs targeting multiple genes. Moreover, recent studies suggest that miRNAs reflect the stage of the specific disease, such as carcinogenesis. Cystic diseases, including polycystic kidney disease, polycystic liver disease, pancreatic cystic disease, and ovarian cystic disease, have common processes of cyst formation in the specific organ.
