Infections and Autoimmune Disorders of the Eyelids - Difficult Differential Diagnoses and Therapeutic Challenges.

Various inflammatory diseases can occur in the eyelids. Infectious disorders - such as staphylococcal or demodex blepharitis, dermatological diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, ocular rosacea or ocular cicatricial pemphigoid and rheumatological diseases such as dermatomyositis or sarcoidosis - are just some of these aetiologies. Clinically, these causes of blepharitis can manifest in inflammation of the eyelid margin with collarettes around the eyelash follicles, madarosis, meibomian gland dysfunction, erythema, and nodular tumour. Even if the clinical differential diagnosis between the va

Phytochemical study of Magonia pubescens A. St.-Hil. and cytotoxicity of branches aqueous extract on breast cancer and leukemia cells.

Magonia pubescens is a natural species from the Brazilian cerrado biome. Its fruits and seeds are used in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis, a common inflammatory skin disease. In this work, the known compounds lapachol, stigmasterol, maniladiol and scopoletin were isolated from hexane and dichloromethane extracts of M. pubescens branches. The aqueous extract of this material was fractioned through a liquid-liquid partition and the obtained fractions were analyzed by UHPLC-MS/MS. The results obtained were compared with data from three databases, leading to the putative identification of 5

Effect of zinc pyrithione shampoo treatment on skin commensal Malassezia.

UNLABELLED: Malassezia restricta and Malassezia globosa are lipid dependent commensal yeasts associated with dandruff. Antifungal actives such as zinc pyrithione are commonly used in antidandruff shampoos, although their efficacy is not clearly demonstrated. In this study, we assessed the efficacy of antifungal treatments on scalp Malassezia via a combination of culturomic and genomic detection methods. Zinc pyrithione inhibited Malassezia growth at low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). In a longitudinal pilot study, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis showed a decre

Parkinson's disease pathogenesis, evolution and alternative pathways: A review.

Sporadic Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases of the elderly. In the scientific literature, surveys aiming to investigate the potential diagnostic biomarkers for PD have focused on skin and intestinal tissue biopsies, whereas more recent studies have reported an association between PD and skin disorders, such as seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea. In addition, a connection between PD and Crohn's disease has been established. These data suggest the hypothesis of a possible link between the gastrointestinal tract and skin and the development of PD. In fact

Labial adhesions in postmenopausal women: presentation and management.

Labial adhesion is defined as complete or partial fusion of the labia minora in the midline through flimsy or dense adhesions. It may be congenital or acquired. Acquired cases are mainly seen in oestrogen deficiency states in prepubertal girls and postmenopausal women. Aggravating factors include chronic inflammation due to poor hygiene, eczema, lichen planus or sclerosus, seborrhic dermatitis, eczema, local trauma and recurrent urinary tract infections. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with urinary or vulval symptoms. Management in mild cases includes the application of topical oestrog

Oral manifestations may be the first sign of Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare proliferative disorder of histiocytes characterised by a proliferation of abnormal and clonal Langerhans cells. LCH most commonly occurs as a localised solitary bone lesion and appears predominantly in paediatric patients. This case report presents clinicopathological features of this disorder in a 2-year-old boy. The presenting features of the patient included fever, bleeding gums and seborrheic dermatitis-like rash. Intraoral examination and radiographs revealed deep pockets and severe bone loss around all primary molars. Due to severe periodonta

Organ transplantation and skin--principles and concepts.

Solid organ transplantation influences the biology of the skin profoundly. In the wake of transplantation, inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic disorders arise, often with atypical clinical presentation. Inflammatory disorders mainly relate to pathogen-driven conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and pityrosporum folliculitis and to drug reactions. Infectious disorders are dominated by viral infections of human papilloma virus and by infections and reactivations of herpes family members. Neoplastic disorders are greatly increased with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin as most relevant

Four cases of dermatomycosis: superficial cutaneous infection by Alternaria or Bipolaris.

Invasive dermal infections in immunosuppressed patients by a wide variety of opportunistic fungi are well described in the literature; however, superficial infections (dermatomycosis) are more rarely described. We report 4 cases of dermatomycosis by Alternaria or Bipolaris species. All but one of the patients had predisposing conditions including topical corticosteroid use, atopic or seborrheic dermatitis, and nail dystrophy. All 4 patients were otherwise immunocompetent. These cases represent some of the very few reports of Bipolaris in a primary stratum corneum infection and the first report

Scalp involvement in dermatomyositis. Often overlooked or misdiagnosed.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize scalp involvement in patients with dermatomyositis. DESIGN: Case series. PATIENTS: All patients with dermatomyositis seen in our office between 1988 and mid 1993. Patient inclusion in this study required fulfillment of three or more of Bohan and Peter's criteria for dermatomyositis. RESULTS: Of 17 patients with the diagnosis of dermatomyositis, scalp involvement was present in 14. Five of the 14 patients with scalp involvement were diagnosed as having scalp psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis before progression of their disease or tissue examination revealed the di

The AIDS epidemic.

The nature of the clinical presentation of HIV infection continues to evolve over time. New cutaneous (e.g., seborrheic dermatitis, onychomycosis, and tinea pedis) and systemic (e.g., Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicillium marneffei) opportunistic fungal infections can now be added to the classic clinical markers for progressive HIV infection, such as Kaposi's sarcoma, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, Mycobacterium avium intercellulare infections, and cryptococcal meningitis. The fact that the appearance of many of these fungal diseases is directly correlated with the patient's CD4 cell count is

Tinea capitis in The Netherlands (Rotterdam area).

This retrospective study reviews the occurrence and treatment of various forms of tinea capitis at the out-patient clinic for Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology of the University Hospital Sophia/Dijkzigt over the period 1977-1988. Tinea capitis was diagnosed in 64 children. Trichophyton violaceum was the pathogen most frequently isolated, with Microsporum canis ranking second. The potassium hydroxide preparation was positive in 58% of the cases. Four cases showed a positive potassium hydroxide preparation with a negative culture. Immigrant children from Morocco were the largest group (61%).

Atopic Dermatitis in Children: Differential Diagnosis and Mimickers.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory dermatosis that is characterized by pruritus, xerosis, and age-dependent clinical heterogeneity. Accurately diagnosing AD remains challenging due to the absence of specific biomarkers and the broad spectrum of conditions that may mimic its presentation. A wide range of inflammatory, infectious, and genetic disorders resemble AD, including seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, scabies, dermatophytosis, and nummular eczema, as well as rare immunodeficiency and metabolic conditions. This review summarizes the

Exploring the Therapeutic Landscape: A Narrative Review on Topical and Oral Phosphodiesterase-4 Inhibitors in Dermatology.

Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) is involved in the synthesis of inflammatory cytokines that mediate several chronic inflammatory disorders, including psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In recent years, the therapeutic armamentarium in dermatology has expanded with the introduction of PDE4 inhibitors, both in oral and topical formulations. PDE4 inhibitors have gained increasing interest due to their remarkable safety record and ease of prescription, as evidenced by the recent influx of literature detailing its off-label uses. Apremilast was the first PDE4 inhibitor approved by the US Food and Drug Adm

The Skin and Lewy Body Disease.

This manuscript reviews the significant skin manifestations of Lewy body disease, including Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, and the diagnostic utility of skin biopsy. Besides classic motor and cognitive symptoms, non-motor manifestations, particularly dermatologic disorders, can play a crucial role in disease presentation and diagnosis. This review explores the intricate relationship between the skin and Lewy body disease. Seborrheic dermatitis, autoimmune blistering diseases (bullous pemphigoid and pemphigus), rosacea, and melanoma are scrutinized for their unique associati

Alternatives Integrating Omics Approaches for the Advancement of Human Skin Models: A Focus on Metagenomics, Metatranscriptomics, and Metaproteomics.

The human skin microbiota, a complex community of bacterial, fungal, and viral organisms, plays a crucial role in maintaining skin homeostasis and regulating host-pathogen interactions. Dysbiosis within this microbial ecosystem has been implicated in various dermatological conditions, including acne vulgaris, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. This review, for the first time, provides recent advancements in all four layers of omic technologies-metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, and metabolomics-offering comprehensive insights into microbial diversity, in t

Interprofessional Collaboration: Differentiating Netherton Syndrome and Atopic Dermatitis in an African American Infant.

Netherton syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder that clinically presents with a triad of congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, hair shaft abnormalities, and immune dysregulation, which is confirmed with genetic testing for mutations in the serine protease inhibitor Kazal-type 5 (SPINK5) gene. This diagnosis was included in our differential due to the patient's recurring and unimproving rash with desquamating skin. While eczema was included in our differential diagnoses, the patient's systemic symptoms, including failure to thrive, prompted our team to consider other diagnoses. This
