Previous studies have shown that feral cats (Felis catus) from rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) epidemic areas in New Zealand had antibodies against RHD Virus (RHDV) and RHDV RNA was identified by nested RT-PCR from one seropositive feral cat liver. OBJECTIVES: To determine exposure to domestic violence by a partner or spouse among pregnant women attending a public sector hospital in Durban, South Africa.
DESIGN: Six hundred and four randomly chosen women from a low-income community were interviewed over a 6-month period using a standardised questionnaire.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight per cent had experienced domestic violence at some point in their lives. Physical abuse (52%) was the most common, and 35% had been abused during the current pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing recognition of the problem of domestic violence (DV), it has not been studied in surgical populations.
METHODS: Eligible patients underwent screening for a recent history of DV and alcohol abuse (AA). Other demographic, health, and injury-related data were also collected.

We report the first isolation of Sporothrix schenckii from the nail surfaces of cats. The fungus grew from nail clippings of three cats associated with three household outbreaks of sporotrichosis involving cats and human beings. The identification of the isolates was based on macroscopic and microscopic morphological characteristics at 25 degrees C and conversion of S. schenckii to the yeast-like form at 37 degrees C.
