We report making the prenatal diagnosis of thanatophoric dysplasia at 24 weeks gestation. The ultrasound examination showed short limbs. By in utero radiological study, we could see the typical changes of this skeletal dysplasia. Radiological and histological studies confirmed the aborted fetus to be affected with thanatophoric dysplasia.

Central nervous system abnormalities were found in seven infants with thanatophoric dysplasia, including two with cloverleaf skull deformity. These abnormalities were megalencephaly, dysplastic temporal cortex, lateral displacement of basal ganglia, dysplasia of several nuclei, and fiber tract deformities. They are characteristic and distinct components of thanatophoric dysplasia.

A study of seven cases of pycnodysostosis belonging to four different families confirmed the autosomal recessive transmission of the disease. In two sibships which included respectively four and six sibs, two sisters were affected. Furthermore, consanguinity of the parents was observed in three of the four families.

A Turkish family with four children is described, two boys suffering from Cockayne's syndrome and a girl from recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (Hallopeau-Siemens). The outstanding features in the brothers are a pronounced delay in growth which began in both children at the age of about 1.5 years, progeria-like facial features, and a high degree of light sensitivity noticed very soon after birth. The daughter died of septicemia at the age of 4 years. Both diseases are rare and probably the consequence of extremely high consanguinity.

A case with spondylocostal dysostosis is reported. Main clinical finding are: short stature, as a consequence of short neck and trunk, due to vertebral body abnormalities, along with abnormal ribs. The clinical aspects and the family history are suggestive of the autosomal recessive form of the disease. The Authors discuss the possibility of neonatal diagnosis of this syndrome and underline the difficulty to give the family a correct genetic counselling. The possibility of prenatal diagnosis is also reported.

The autopsy cases of thanatophoric dysplasia of identical female twins were reported. These babies showed short limbs, long and narrow thoraxes, and depressed nasal roots. Disorganization of endochondral ossification and hypertrophic periosteum were recognized histologically at the epiphyseal plate of femur. The cause of death was respiratory distress caused by hypoplastic and atelectatic lungs. Their mother had no complaints except hydramnios. Female identical twins of this disease are very rare. It could be considered that the disease would be induced by some genetic disorders occurring at t
