In the successful treatment of maxillo-facial injuries, the assessment of the damage sustained, the surgical management and post-operative follow-up will always remain the concern of a number of medical disciplines and therefore early consultation between various specialities is to be encouraged to ensure the best result for the patient. Of paramount importance in dentistry. Emphasis has not been placed on the psychological problems relating to various degrees of loss of body image which must accompany every severe facial injury nor to the value of the specialized care provided by dietary cons…

BACKGROUND: Head injuries are a leading cause of life-threatening injury and death in bicyclist crashes. This study explored real-world cras … ribution, medical imaging, bicyclist demographics and descriptions of crash configuration. Head and facial injuries were categorised based on severity and type of injury. A logistic regression controlling for crash factors was performed to compare the odds of head injuries by helmet status.
RESULTS: Fewer cranial fractures (OR: 0.039; p=0.03) and intracranial ha …

Penetrating head and face injuries can cause hemorrhages, neurological lesions, visual acuity loss, fractures and facial deformities. This report discusses an injury caused by a knife that penetrated the left orbit and reached the skull base without damaging any important structures. The knife was removed through the entrance wound and no complications were observed either during or after surgery.

Peripheral nerve injuries may complicate extracranial vascular surgery. Pareses of the recurrent and hypoglossal nerves are clinically important. The nervus laryngeus superior, the ramus marginalis mandibulae of the facial nerve and the brachial plexus may be involved. Horner's syndrom indicating damage of sympathetic fibers may also appear. Lesions of the glossopharyngeal, vagus and phrenic nerves are rather seldom.

Iatrogenic facial nerve injury is one of the most severe complications of cochlear implantation (CI) surgery. Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (IFNM) is used as an adjunctive modality in a variety of neurotologic surgeries. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess whether the use of IFNM is associated with postoperative facial nerve injury during CI surgery. The medical charts of 645 patients who underwent CI from 1999 to 2014 were reviewed to identify postoperative facial nerve palsy between those who did and did not receive IFNM. Four patients (3 children and 1 adult) were

Despite an improved understanding of traumatic head and neck injury mechanisms, the impact tests required by major motorcycle helmet standards have remained unchanged for decades. Development of new test methods must reflect the specific impact loads causing injury in real crashes as well as test criteria appropriate for the observed injury profiles. This study analysed a collection of in-depth crash investigations of fatally injured helmeted riders in the Adelaide metropolitan region between 1983 and 1994 inclusive to review the head and neck injury patterns that resulted from specific types

Facial nerve baroparesis is a rare complication of middle ear barotrauma reported almost exclusively in overpressure events related to diving and flying. Until the development of Eustachian tube balloon dilation, no diving compatible options existed to effectively and safely prevent recurrence. We present a case of a U.S. Navy diver with a history of repeated ipsilateral facial nerve paresis that occurred during diving. The patient underwent Eustachian tube balloon dilation of the affected side. Following surgery, the patient completed a recompression chamber simulated dive that allowed the pa

Trauma or injury to the dentition and supporting tissues is associated with pain and discomfort, as expected, that may present immediately, shortly afterwards, or within a few days. Pain is an essential response to injury because it allows the organism to develop avoidance behavior to potential threats and helps the organism to avoid usage of the injured organ during the healing process. Not only does external trauma induce pain, but also essential invasive dental procedures such as extractions, dental implant insertions, root canal treatments, and oral surgeries are accompanied by similar pos

This report deals with a female infant 14 months old at time of surgery. Three weeks before admission, she suffered a direct blow to the left cheek by hitting a table. Within 24 h, she developed a hematoma involving the whole cheek. Ten days later, she developed an eschar on the cheek and was referred to us. Three weeks after the initial trauma, the damaged tissues were debrided, including the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscle. The buccal mucosa remained intact. Facial palsy involving the territory of the buccal and mandibular branches was already evident at 3 weeks, as well as facial asym

Skating is a favourite sport in the Netherlands. Injury data on skating were collected from the emergency departments of 6 hospitals in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands during the Eleven Cities ice skating marathon over 200 kilometers in January 1997, with 16,688 participants. Among a total of 55 fractures, the maxillofacial skeleton had a relative high fracture frequency (n = 7; 13%), especially the zygomatic complex (n = 6); one patient had a mandibular fracture. An innocent-looking black eye, unilateral numbness of the upper lip and malocclusion following a skating accident meri

Late presentation of head trauma is rare. A young boy presented with a traumatic facial paralysis after head trauma. A CT scan of the head showed temporal bone fracture without intracranial insult. Facial nerve decompression was performed and paralysis started improving. However, he presented with vertigo and sensorineural hearing loss after 2 months. Clinical examination also showed cerebellar sign. We suspected iatrogenic injury to the cochlea; however, brain MRI showed haemorrhage in the area of anterior inferior cerebellar artery. The patient was managed conservatively and the vertigo impr

We herein describe a case of accessory parotid gland tumor, including diagnosis and surgical approach. The accessory parotid gland is salivary tissue separated from the main parotid gland and lying on masseter muscle. It has secondary duct empting into the Stensen's duct. The accessory parotid gland exists in 21-61 % of individuals. However, the appearance of an accessory parotid tumor is rare, with a reported frequency of 1-7.7 % of all parotid gland tumors. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice for the accessory parotid gland tumor. It is important to identify the buccal branch of th

The incidence of head injury in maxillofacial trauma patients varies widely in the literature. A good understanding of the patterns of association between these injuries would aid in efficient multidisciplinary treatment. The aim of this study therefore was to understand the associations between head injury and facial trauma by retrospectively analysing the records of patients seen at a tertiary care trauma centre. Demographic data were also described. Records of 4350 facial trauma patients over a five-year period were reviewed. A total of 3564 (81.9%) patients were victims of motor vehicle ac

Facial nerve palsy is the most serious complication to be aware of in surgery for parotid gland tumors. It occurs due to various factors including direct intraoperative injury, traction, thermal injury, ischemia, and anatomical variations. While most cases occur immediately after surgery, some may develop within the first 24 to 72 hours due to postoperative edema or hematoma. Delayed facial nerve paralysis occurring more than 72 hours after surgery is extremely rare. We report a case of a 60-year-old woman who developed delayed facial nerve palsy 16 days after parotid gland surgery. Mild paral

OBJECTIVES: Facial nerve injury with resultant facial muscle paralysis is disfiguring and disabling. To the authors' knowledge, neurotization of the facial nerve using a branch of the brachial plexus has not been previously performed.
METHODS: In an attempt to identify an additional nerve donor candidate for facial nerve neurotization, 5 fresh adult human cadavers (10 sides) underwent dissection of the suprascapular nerve distal to the suprascapular notch where it was transected. The facial nerve was localized from the stylomastoid foramen onto the face, and the cut end of the suprascapular n

Although facial nerve palsy is not a life-threatening disease, facial asymmetry affects interpersonal relationships, causes psychological stress, and devastates human life. The treatment and rehabilitation of facial paralysis has many socio-economic costs. Therefore, in cases of facial paralysis, it is necessary to identify the cause and provide the best treatment. However, until now, complete recovery has been difficult regardless of the treatment used in cases of complete paralysis of unknown cause and cutting injury of the facial nerve due to disease or accident. Therefore, this article aim

INTRODUCTION: Shared vehicles, such as e-scooters and electric bicycles, could potentially accelerate the transition toward sustainable mobility. Focusing on e-scooters, the aim of this study is to show, compared with previous years when e-scooter use was significantly reduced, the increased incidence of maxillofacial bone injuries from e-scooters and the most frequent type of fractures.
METHODS: We conducted a monocentric observational retrospective and prospective analysis during the pandemic, from January 1, 2020, until December 31, 2022, on patients' access for maxillofacial traumas at th

Injury to the facial nerve is of concern in surgery of cerebellopontine angle tumors. The crossed acoustic reflex provides a way to monitor the ipsilateral facial nerve with the auditory stimuli delivered to the contralateral side. Using the method of optimum digital filtering, it is possible to monitor the resulting brain stem facial evoked response (BFER) in real time. This paper presents preliminary experiences in more than 18 such operations monitored using this method. This preliminary study demonstrates a trend for a high (88.8%) correlation between BFER and postoperative facial nerve fu
