Multiple-cue probabilistic learning in spider-fearful and in panic-prone individuals.

Probabilistic learning was studied in spider-fearful and in panic-prone individuals. Participants learned to predict the occurrence of aversive outcomes on the basis of relevant and irrelevant stimuli. The salience of irrelevant stimuli was manipulated by the use of threat-related objects, i.e. pictures of spiders and pictures of emergency situations. In spider-fearful individuals, the presence of irrelevant pictures of spiders interfered with the adequate acquisition of the association between neutral relevant stimuli and aversive outcomes. Salient, i.e. threat-related, irrelevant stimuli exe…

Fear of loss of vigilance: development and preliminary validation of a self-report instrument.

We describe the development and initial validation of the Fear of Loss of Vigilance Questionnaire (FLOVQ). Recent investigations indicate that individuals with nocturnal panic (NP) demonstrate increased anxiety and panic in response to meditative relaxation and imagined hypnosis, compared to those with daytime panic (DP) only, suggesting that NP individuals fear situations that involve a loss of vigilance (e.g., relaxation, fatigue and altered states of consciousness). The FLOVQ was designed to assess this construct and was tested in five non-clinical samples and one clinical sample. The 14-it…

Virtual reality exposure therapy for the treatment of fear of flying: a controlled investigation.

Forty-five participants who refused to fly during a screening test and who also met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for specific phobia, agoraphobia, or panic disorder with agoraphobia were randomly assigned to 5 sessions of either virtual reality exposure (VRE) or attention-placebo group treatment (GT). At posttreatment, 65% of VRE participants and 57% of GT participants flew during a test flight. Both groups showed significant improvement following treatment on standardized self-report measures of flight anxiety, with a better outcome for the VRE group on 4 of

Relationship of cognitions to fear of somatic symptoms: a test of the cognitive theory of panic.

The relationship between fear of physical anxiety symptoms and cognitive misinterpretation of those symptoms, as measured by responses to the Body Sensations Questionnaire and the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire, respectively, was examined for two samples of outpatients with panic disorder. Factor analytic and correlational analyses demonstrated that the patients' self-rated fear of specific physical and psychological symptoms was related to the frequency of specific logically related catastrophic thoughts (e.g., fears of heart palpitations or chest pressure with thoughts of a heart attac…

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Fear Questionnaire in injured workers with chronic pain.

In an effort to extend the validity of the Fear Questionnaire (FQ) in a sample of patients with high levels of blood/injury phobia, the FQ responses of 255 injured workers with chronic pain were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis. Results indicated that an intercorrelated three-factor model of the FQ provided a better fit to the data than unidimensional, two-factor, hierarchical three-factor, or categorical three-factor models. These findings provide further support for the factorial validity of the FQ and the corresponding multidimensional theory of fear.

Benzodiazepine (omega) receptor partial agonists and the acquisition of conditioned fear in mice.

It is well established that benzodiazepines can produce anterograde amnesia in humans and interfere with the acquisition of passive avoidance and spatial responses in rodents. However, the extent to which the disruption of learning is a secondary effect of the sedation produced by these drugs has not been clearly established. In order to investigate this question, the effects of several BZ (omega) receptor partial agonists were studied on the acquisition of conditioned fear (passive avoidance learning) in mice. As these drugs have been shown to produce anticonvulsant and anxiolytic-like effect…

The relationship between interaction patterns and agoraphobic fears among college students.

In the present study, we investigated the relationships between self-reports of agoraphobic-like anxiety (fear of open, crowded places), panic experiences, childhood separation anxiety, and family interaction patterns in a college student population. The research was conducted in two parts. Correlational analyses of the results of Study 1 revealed significant relationships between anxiety, difficulties in managing life transitions, and measures of family interaction (intergenerational and peer individuation, intergenerational and peer intimacy) as measured by the Personal Authority in the Fami…

The prevalence and practice management consequences of dental fear in a major US city.

In 1986, 1,019 residents of Seattle were surveyed about their dental fears, dental experiences, and perceived oral health status. High dental fear in Seattle was found to affect 204 per 1,000 people. More than 66% acquired their fear in early childhood. Females were 1.8 times more likely than males to report high fear (P less than .001). An individual was 1.6 times as likely to have high levels of dental fear if he or she had at least one oral problem such as bleeding gingiva (P = .004).

Beliefs and fears underlying type A behavior: correlates of time urgency and hostility.

Price (1980, 1983) has proposed that Type A behavior allows individuals to cope with fears and anxieties engendered by beliefs about their environment they develop through socialization. The present investigation tested her cognitive social learning model of Type A behavior by developing measures of beliefs and fears and validating them against Type A measures. Data was provided by 137 male and female university students of administration who completed questionnaires. Three beliefs and four fears were assessed along with four aspects of Type A behavior. Measures of beliefs and fears were moder…

Factors Affecting Pain, Fear, and Comfort Levels After Intramuscular Injection and Nursing Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Intramuscular (IM) injections are among the most frequently performed nursing interventions and are often associated with pain, fear, and reduced patient comfort. Although technical and individual factors influencing pain have been widely studied, limited evidence exists on the interrelationship between pain, fear, and comfort in adult patients receiving IM injections in emergency settings. AIM: This study aimed to determine factors associated with pain, fear, and comfort and to examine the relationships among these outcomes after intramuscular injection. DESIGN: This study was a…

Fluoxetine enhances the retention of fear extinction in corticosterone-exposed male adolescent rats.

Adolescents have impaired fear regulation, especially after chronic stressor exposure. Treatments that typically improve the retention of fear extinction in adolescent rats are not effective in those exposed to elevated levels of stress-related hormones (e.g., cortisol in humans, corticosterone in rats). Here, we examined whether the negative effects of chronic corticosterone exposure on fear extinction in adolescent rats could be ameliorated by fluoxetine (Prozac), a commonly prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). We found that chronic stressor exposure, as mimicked by oral…

Asymmetrical modulation of fear expression via GABAB receptors in the mouse medial habenula.

The medial habenula (MHb) is implicated in regulating emotional responses to aversive events. Studies in zebrafish have identified a remarkable morphological left-right asymmetry in the dorsal habenula (zebrafish equivalent of mammalian MHb)-interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) pathway and its asymmetrical roles in behavior. However, there is little evidence for structural or functional lateralization in the mammalian MHb-IPN pathway. Here, we investigated the synaptic properties of left- and right-MHb afferents to the IPN and their roles in the expression of conditioned fear in mice. We found that e…

Neurocognitive mechanisms of mental imagery-based fear conditioning in individuals with social anxiety.

Fear learning serves as a foundational framework for understanding anxiety disorders, with growing interest in the role of mental imagery in fear conditioning. The present study examined whether individuals with social anxiety can acquire fear responses toward neutral conditioned stimuli (CS) via imagined fear-related social scenarios acting as unconditioned stimuli (US). Employing an imagery-based fear conditioning paradigm integrated with event-related potentials (ERPs), we recruited 31 participants with high social anxiety and 30 with low social anxiety. Behaviorally, neutral faces, initial…

Examining attentional biases in contamination fear and checking symptoms: An eye-tracking study.

Cognitive biases are implicated in the maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet findings from reaction-time paradigms remain mixed. Eye-tracking offers a direct window into these attentional processes. We examined symptom-specific attentional patterns in university students selected for high vs. low contamination fear (HCF n = 10, LCF n = 10) and high vs. low checking (HC n = 10, LC n = 10) from a screened sample (N = 774). Participants viewed symptom-matched (disgust or checking) and general threat pairs against neutral images. Attentional bias was indexed as vigilance (first f…

Inequality, Trust and Fear: Migrant Healthcare During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond.

Many migrants are considered to be disadvantaged regarding their social, economic and health outcomes. During the COVID-19 pandemic these inequalities grew starker, especially in healthcare, as migrants were at increased risk of exposure and had a reduced ability to seek care or access support. This paper will explore these issues through the analysis of narrative interviews gathered during a large-scale, cross-European project which explored the experiences of 740 marginalised individuals, including migrants, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We build upon Beck's concept of the 'risk society' by

Targeted NMDA receptor knockdown in recall-activated neuronal ensembles impairs remote fear extinction.

Fear extinction training in rodents decreases fear responses, providing a model for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder therapeutics. Fear memory recall reactivates the consolidated fear memory trace across multiple brain regions, and several studies have suggested that these recall-activated neurons are re-engaged during extinction. However, the molecular mechanisms linking this reactivation to extinction remain largely elusive. Here, we investigated the role of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in remote memory recall-activated neurons within the basolateral amygdala and …

Serotonergic modulation of the BNST-CeA pathway reveals sex differences in fear learning.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by intense fear memory formation and is diagnosed more often in women than men. Here we show that increasing serotonin pharmacologically before auditory fear conditioning promoted memory recall in female and male mice, and that females were more sensitive to this effect. Optogenetic stimulation of raphe terminals in the anterior dorsal bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (adBNST) during fear conditioning increased c-Fos expression in the BNST and central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) and enhanced fear memory recall through activation of 5-…
