[Slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE)].

A slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE) is the most common disease of the hip among adolescents. In the light of our current knowledge on the development of coxarthrosis, it represents a first line model case that has led to a series of novel ideas in the therapy for SUFE. The development of coxarthrosis from a cam impingement, i.e., the loss of offset of the neck of the femur and degenerative damage to the acetabular lip as its early form, is seen again in the clinical picture of slipped upper femoral epiphysis. Depending on the degree of slippage, we see a varying severity of the loss of of

A finite element analysis of a low-profile femoral neck system of screws in sleeves in a vertical femoral neck fracture model.

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck system (FNS) has exhibited some drawbacks, such as non-fit of the plate with the lateral femoral cortex, postoperative pain, and the potential risk of subtrochanteric fractures. We have developed a low-profile FNS system that addresses some compatibility issues in FNS. In this study, we conducted finite element analysis on the 1-hole FNS (1 H-FNS), 2-holes FNS (2 H-FNS), and low-profile FNS (LP-FNS) and compared their biomechanical performance. METHODS: After the mesh convergence analysis, we established three groups of 1 H-FNS, 2 H-FNS, and LP-FNS. The interfragmenta

Surgically Treated Femoral Neck Stress Fractures Are Likely to Result in Military Separation During Basic Combat Training.

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck stress fractures are a common condition affecting military service members, most noticeably during basic combat training. Previous studies have investigated the risk factors for femoral neck stress fracture development in basic trainees and outcomes associated with treatment; however, few studies have focused on operatively treated femoral neck stress fracture in the military trainee. Doing so would be important not only for the military, but also providers caring for athletes, such as distance runners, who have a heightened risk for femoral neck stress fracture develo

Musculoskeletal Occupational Injuries among Orthopedic Surgeons: Risk Factors and Insights from a Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) accounts for 5-7% of all benign bone tumors. It presents in two main forms - monostotic, which is more common affecting a single bone and presenting usually in 3rd decade of life; polyostotic, affecting several bones, is less common, and is seen mainly in the 1st decade of life. These usually present as bone pain or pathological fracture. It may also be part of McCune-Albright syndrome. Since the femur is an important weight-bearing bone in the human body, most cases of FD affecting the femur present as pathological fracture more early than other sites. The

Comparison of intra-and interobserver reliability analysis of orientation proximal femur physis parameters on radiographs.

BACKGROUND: The orientation of proximal femur physis is important as it can cause 3-dimensional deformity of the proximal femur. Recently, authors have described various parameters to describe the orientation of proximal femur physis. Therefore, we aim to compare the intra and interobserver reliability of these parameters in this study. METHODS: Radiographs of the bilateral hip with the pelvis of children between 1 and 10 years of age were retrieved from the hospital archives to measure the Physeal orientation angle (PO), Physeal tilt angle (PTA), Head shaft angle (HSA), and Alsberg angle (AA

Survivability of the Femoral Neck System for the treatment of femoral neck fractures in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures are common injuries in the elderly, with an incidence that continues to rise. The femoral neck system (FNS) recently emerged as a novel treatment option for femoral neck fractures, but long-term survivability of the implant remains uncertain. The purpose of this study is to evaluate survivability of the FNS and assess risk factors for implant failure. METHODS: One hundred five adult patients who received the FNS (DePuy Synthes, Raynham, MA) for femoral neck fractures (AO/OTA 31B) were included. Surgeries were performed within a regional hospital system comprising 1

Comparing Perioperative Outcome Measures of the Dynamic Hip Screw and the Femoral Neck System.

Background and Objective: Various fixation devices and surgical techniques are available for the management of proximal femur fractures. Recently, the femoral neck system (FNS) was introduced, and was promoted on the basis of less invasiveness, shorter operating time, and less fluoroscopy time compared to previous systems. The aim of this study was to compare two systems for the internal fixation of femoral neck fractures (FNF), namely the dynamic hip screw (DHS) with an anti-rotation screw (ARS) and an FNS. The outcome measures included operating room time (ORT), dose−area product (DAP), leng
