Development of the sensory nerves to the dorsum of the tongue in staged human embryos.

To determine in selected, staged human embryos the time period and manner of formation of the sensory nerves to the mucosa on the dorsum of the tongue, cranial nerves V(3) and IX and their lingual branches were traced microscopically. These two cranial nerves along with cranial nerve VII are present in the dorsal part of their respective pharyngeal arch 1, 2, and 3 at Stage 13. All three nerves grow ventrally at Stage 16, and the lingual branches of V(3) and IX become closer to the developing tongue region. The lingual fibers begin to enter the tongue substance at Stage 17 when they appear as

The development of the external urethral sphincter in humans.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the hypothesis that during fetal development, the external urethral sphincter changes from a concentric sphincter of undifferentiated muscle fibres to a transient ring of striated muscle which regresses caudo-cranially in the posterior urethra during the first year of life, when the sphincter assumes its omega-shaped configuration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anatomy and development of the external urinary sphincter was assessed in human males and females during fetal life. Plastic-embedded sections (transverse, sagittal and frontal planes; 300-700 microm) of the pelvis of…

[Human ontogeny of the left colon. Fetal stage].

Foetal evolution of bowel is the result of unequal growth of its segments and abdominal constraint of pressure. Caecum and appendix on the cranial and right side of intestine torsion differentiate colic anlage. Left colon observations in 20 foetus reveal a dorsal peritoneal fusion between 12 and 17 weeks: Progressive growth of left colon and meso, without dorsal fixation, beyond left kidney and subrenal gland. First mesocolon fixation at the left kidney. A tunnel persist between this fusion and the primitive mesocolon root. Radial advance of peritoneal fusion up to sigmoid mesocolon, with disa

Relationship between the intervertebral foramina and the spinal nerves at the level of C4-T2 of the human fetal vertebral column.

In 80 human fetuses of both sexes, aged 4 to 7 months the spatiality of the intervertebral foramina and the area of the cross-section of the spinal nerves at the level of C4-T2 of the vertebral column were investigated. It was found that the narrowness of the intervertebral foramen is not related to the sex of fetus. The most probable places for such narrowness are intervertebral foramina C4-C5 and T1-T2 on the right side and C7-T1 on the left side.

Cortical branches of the middle cerebral artery in human fetuses.

In 30 human fetuses, aged 20-31 weeks, the middle cerebral artery and its cortical branches were investigated with injection method. The cortical branches pass on the superlateral surface of the cortex and from a dense net communicating with corresponding vessels of the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries.

Cephalic axial skeletal-neural dysraphic disorders: embryology and pathology.

Three fundamental types of cephalic axial skeletal-neural dysrapic disorders are analyzed, including: cranioschisis aperta with encephaloschisis (anencephaly and/or exencephaly), cranioschisis occulta with occipital encephalocele, and the Chiari malformation (occipital bone hypoplasia) with compression, deformation and displacement of hindbrain, cerebellum, and medulla. Both clinical and experimental (vitamin A induced) examples of these malformations are used. The study establishes that these are not simple neurological (neural tube defects) disorders as it has been generally assumed, but com

Changes in fibronectin distribution in the developing peripheral nervous system of the chick.

The relationship of peripheral nerves with fibronectin was examined at different stages of the chick embryo using double immunofluorescent staining. Neurons were stained with a monoclonal antibody (E/C8) against intermediate filaments in neuronal processes, and fibronectin was stained with polyclonal antibodies. Prior to axonal outgrowth, fibronectin was distributed in a meshwork throughout the mesenchyme. However, soon after the initiation of axonal outgrowth, fibronectin began to disappear along neuronal pathways. Thus, during the period of active axonal growth, all neural tissues were marke

Relative growth of the human metacarpals in the prenatal period: anatomic basis of preventive surgery for congenital deformities of the hand.

Twenty right metacarpal bones of Brazilian fetuses (ranging from 17 to 35 weeks post-conception) were studied by the allometric method to define the pattern of metacarpal growth. The metacarpal measurements analysed were their maximum length (ML), ossified shaft length (OSL) and midshaft breadth (MSB). These data were related to crown-rump length and the metacarpal weight to fetal weight. The increase in metacarpal measurements showed an allometric positive coefficient (kappa), highest in the OSL. The ML growth followed an axo-marginal pattern. The 3rd metacarpal showed the highest MSB kappa c

Onco-fetal Reprogramming of Endothelial Cells Drives Immunosuppressive Macrophages in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

We employed scRNA sequencing to extensively characterize the cellular landscape of human liver from development to disease. Analysis of ∼212,000 cells representing human fetal, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and mouse liver revealed remarkable fetal-like reprogramming of the tumor microenvironment. Specifically, the HCC ecosystem displayed features reminiscent of fetal development, including re-emergence of fetal-associated endothelial cells (PLVAP/VEGFR2) and fetal-like (FOLR2) tumor-associated macrophages. In a cross-species comparative analysis, we discovered remarkable similarity between …

Management of pregnancy and labour in cases diagnosed with major fetal malformation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To explore the obstetrical management of pregnancies with severe fetal malformations, taking into account the rapid improvement in ultrasound technology and interventional possibilities. RECENT FINDINGS: Unique studies using modern ultrasound techniques describe the evolution of spina bifida and the subsequent varying development of hydrocephalus. In addition, the dilated fetal stomach is shown to be an ominous sign of complications in cases of gastroschisis. Such complications can be decreased by prenatal supervision using cardiotocography, which detects signs of fetal dis

Importance of gestational hypoglycaemia for foetal malformations and skeletal development in rats.

The aim was to investigate embryo-foetal effects of continuous maternal insulin-induced hypoglycaemia extending throughout gestation or until gestation day (GD)17 (typical last day of dosing during pre-clinical evaluation) providing comparator data for safety assessment of longer-acting insulin analogues in non-diabetic rats. Pregnant rats received human insulin (HI)-infusion during gestation until either GD20 or GD17 (HI-GD20; HI-GD17). On GD20, foetal abnormalities and skeletal ossification/mineralisation were evaluated. HI-infusion induced continuous hypoglycaemia. Foetal skeletal and eye m

Micronutrients and fetal growth.

Fetal undernutrition affects large numbers of infants in developing countries, with adverse consequences for their immediate survival and lifelong health. It manifests as intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), defined as birth weight <10th percentile, which probably underestimates the number failing to achieve full growth potential. Birth weight is a crude measure of the dynamic process of fetal growth and does not capture effects of fetal undernutrition on body composition and the development of specific tissues. The link between maternal nutrition and fetal nutrition is indirect. The fetus

Comparison study of the correlation between free and total 25(OH)D in maternal and umbilical blood and early-life physical development parameters.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between free and total 25(OH)D levels and fetal growth during pregnancy, and to evaluate whether free 25(OH)D is a better indicator of vitamin D status compared to total 25(OH)D. METHODS: A total of 160 pregnant women and their newborns were consecutively recruited from a Jiangsu hospital (March-May 2019). Maternal blood was collected before delivery, and cord blood was collected after umbilical cord disconnection. Serum free and total 25(OH)D were measured by ELISA. Clinical data, including pregnancy records, neonatal assessments, and 6-month follow

Tracking placental development in health and disease.

Pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction arise from disorders of placental development and have some shared mechanistic features. Initiation is often rooted in the maldevelopment of a maternal-placental blood supply capable of providing for the growth requirements of the fetus in later pregnancy, without exerting undue stress on maternal body systems. Here, we review normal development of a placental bed with a safe and adequate blood supply and a villous placenta-blood interface from which nutrients and oxygen can be extracted for the growing fetus. We consider disease mechanisms that are i
