The occurrence and irreversibility of tardive dyskinesia (TD), a motor disorder of the orofacial region, resulting from chronic neuroleptic treatment has been considered a major clinical issue in the treatment of schizophrenia. The molecular mechanism underlying the pathophysiology of TD is not completely known. Several animal studies have demonstrated an enhancement of oxidative damage and increased glutamatergic transmission after chronic administration of neuroleptics. The present study investigated the effect of rutin, an antioxidant in haloperidol-induced orofacial dyskinesia by using dif

Local acidosis (pH 6.4) depresses reactivity of vascular smooth muscle and especially the response of human isolated saphenous veins to exogenous norepinephrine. Experiments were performed to study, under acidosis conditions, the interaction between Daflon 500 mg, a micronized fraction of 90% diosmin and 10% hesperidin, and norepinephrine on human rings of veins. Varicose veins were obtained by conservative varicose veins surgery and normal veins from patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Isometric tension was recorded from venous rings in organ chambers filled with Krebs-H

Although flavonoids have been shown to have various health benefits, their association with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study included 188 101 UK Biobank participants who were free of AAA at baseline dietary assessment. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyze the association between flavonoid intake and AAA risk, and elastic net regression was applied to construct a metabolite signature to evaluate potential mediation effects. Additionally, network pharmacology integrated with single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-se…

Licorice flavonoids (LF), bioactive components of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, exhibit promising anti-colorectal cancer (CRC) potential. However, the mechanism by which LF inhibits CRC remains unclear. In this study, we attempt to elucidate how indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) functions as a convergent downstream effector of both microbiota-derived signals and host oncogenic pathways in order to mediate the chemopreventive effects of LF on CRC. Using AOM/DSS and Apcmin/+ CRC mice models and colonic epithelial cells, we combined 16S rRNA sequencing, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and functi…

Pregnancy is a sensitive window period for bisphenol A (BPA) exposure. BPA can pass through the placenta and cause reproductive damage in offspring female mice. Even BPA that is not metabolized during lactation can be passed through milk. Cuscuta chinensis flavonoids (CCFs) can alleviate reproductive damage caused by BPA, but the mechanism of action is unclear. To investigate the potential mitigating impact of CCFs on ovarian damage resulting from BPA exposure during pregnancy, we administered BPA and CCFs to pregnant mice during the gestational period spanning from 0.5 to 17.5 days. Aseptic c…

BACKGROUND: Artesunate (ART) is a semi-synthetized molecule from Artemisinin, an active compound isolated from the medicinal plant Artemisia annua, widely used for the treatment of malaria. Previous studies reported that ART may exert a dual effect on the liver. Accordingly, this study investigated the potential protective action of ART against Acetaminophen (APAP) and Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in primary mice hepatocytes, in comparison to that of flavonoid extracted from A. annua (FAA). In addition, the antioxidant properties of FAA were also assessed.
METHODS: The a

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is diagnosed based on the clinical symptoms, risk factors, and pulmonary function tests. Exposure to cigarette smoke (CS), microbial infection stimulates monocytes and macrophages to rapidly synthesise and release inflammatory factors. A previous study of Trollius altaicus (TAF) revealed that it had significant anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects on a pneumonia disease. Based on recent studies of the inflammatory pathway of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), we will explore the influence of TAF on COPD.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Radix scutellariae (the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi), is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Abundant flavonoids are the antidiabetic components of Radix scutellariae, of which baicalin (Baicalein 7-O-glucuronide, BG) is the major bioactive component. Our previous studies found that the water extract of Radix scutellariae (WESB) could exert hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic efficacies by adjusting the ileum FXR-medicated interaction between gut microbiota and bile acid (BA) metabolism. However, it remains u…
