A rapid and sensitive biosensor immunoassay was developed for determination of ivermectin residues in bovine milk. A detection limit of 16.2 ng/mL was achieved. A Biacore optical biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance was used, and a range of extraction techniques was investigated. In the final assay procedure, ivermectin was extracted with acetonitrile followed by C8 solid-phase extraction cleanup. It was proven experimentally that 2 methods of milk storage, freezing or addition of mercury-containing compounds as preservatives, could be used without considerable change in detected conce

Antibiotics and chemotherapeutics in food may only be present in concentrations below a toxicologically approved level. To check the established limits laboratories depend on reliable methods: on the one hand rapid and inexpensive screening tests (biological and immunological methods), on the other hand rather costly but very specific chemical-analytical reference methods. The results of residue testing in a big slaughter plant are presented. Residues of antibiotics were mainly found in calves. The most frequently detected drugs were tetracyclines, sulfonamides and aminoglycosides.

Tetrachloroethene (perchloroethylene) and other volatile organic compounds may contaminate the surroundings of dry-cleaning units. Increased concentrations of tetrachloroethene were found in food, human hair, textiles and dust from a vacuum cleaner in a home situated above a dry-cleaning unit. The concentrations were found to be extremely high in food rich in fat. The analytical procedure for the above-mentioned samples is described.

Opisthorchiasis is one of the diseases of public health importance in Thailand. It has been estimated that approximately 7 million of the population harbour this liver fluke. Although the mortality rate is not high, the morbidity causes increased loss of man power (work days lost) and economic problems to the people. The infection is common among the rural population of Northeast Thailand, which has increased from 3.5 million in 1965 to 5.4 million in 1981. This high prevalence is due to the population explosion and adverse effects of development of reservoirs and large scale irrigation system

Seven categories of cereal-based food products purchased at food retail outlets in UK were examined for the presence of mites by analysing 20 g samples using a flotation method. Mites were found in 21% of 571 samples, which were examined soon after purchase, and in 38% of 421 samples, derived from the 571 samples which were examined after 6 weeks of storage in volunteers' homes. Most of the samples where mites were detected had fewer than five mites. However, a few samples contained more than 20 mites with a maximum of 428 mites detected in a single sample. Acrylamide related substances (AAs), including N-methylacrylamide and N-hydroxymethylacrylamide, are highly polar, low-molecular-weight organic compounds that have raised significant food safety concerns due to their prevalence in thermally processed foods. AAs exhibit potential neurotoxicity and AA itself also demonstrates reproductive toxicity and possible carcinogenic effects. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified AA as a Group 2 A probable human carcinogen, underscoring the health risks associated with long-term dietary exposure to AAs. Consequently, efficient and

Anisakis simplex is a nematode which infects marine fish. It requires marine mammals for its development. The larvae are found in fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods which are intermediate hosts. The parasite can be ingested by man -mainly with raw fishes- and induces an infestation called anisakiasis or anisakidosis with digestive tract symptoms. Since 1990, we have known that the parasite can also induce allergic symptoms such urticaria.

Over 8000 ready to eat foods were examined for the presence of Listeria species. Overall, 5% of foods were found to contain these organisms. Higher occurrence was found in some foods such as chicken (11%) and fish (14%). Most of the Listeria species isolated were L. monocytogenes (49%) and L. innocua (36%) with lower numbers of other species. No seasonal pattern in the recovery of L. monocytogenes was found. Unsatisfactory or potentially hazardous levels of L. monocytogenes were found in 14 products (< 0.2%), mostly cooked meats. Undercooked chicken products appeared to present the greatest ri
