Case report: Autoimmune encephalitis associated with anti-CASPR2 antibody mimicking cerebral infarction.

Autoimmune encephalitis associated with antibody against contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2) varies in its clinical presentation. The disease is difficult to distinguish from some other conditions without testing for anti-CASPR2 antibody in blood serum or cerebrospinal fluid. Cerebral lesions are typically detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the medial temporal lobe or hippocampus. Here, we describe a patient with anti-CASPR2 antibody autoimmune encephalitis whose imaging manifestations mimicked infarction in the left frontal lobe. The 48-year-old man reported memory loss,…

Decoding predicted future states from the brain's "physics engine".

Successful engagement with the physical world requires the ability to predict future events and plan interventions to alter that future. Growing evidence implicates a set of regions in the human parietal and frontal lobes [also known as the "physics network" (PN)] in such intuitive physical inferences. However, the central tenet of this hypothesis, that PN runs forward simulations to predict future states, remains untested. In this preregistered study, we first show that PN abstractly represents whether two objects are in contact with each other, a physical scene property critical for predicti…

Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation alterations in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy: a resting-state fMRI study.

PURPOSE: We sought to use the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method to investigate the changes in spontaneous brain activity in CSM patients and their relationships with clinical features. METHODS: We recruited 20 patients with CSM, and 20 healthy controls (HCs) matched for age, sex, and education status. The fALFF method was used to evaluate the altered spontaneous brain activities. The Pearson correlation analysis of fALFF and the clinical features were carried out. RESULTS: Compared with HC, CSM group showed increased fALFF values in the left middle frontal gyru

The visuo-sensorimotor substrate of co-speech gesture processing.

Co-speech gestures are integral to human communication and exhibit diverse forms, each serving a distinct communication function. However, existing literature has focused on individual gesture types, leaving a gap in understanding the comparative neural processing of these diverse forms. To address this, our study investigated the neural processing of two types of iconic gestures: those representing attributes or event knowledge of entity concepts, beat gestures enacting rhythmic manual movements without semantic information, and self-adaptors. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, sys

Novel 3D video action recognition deep learning approach for near real time epileptic seizure classification.

Seizure semiology is a well-established method to classify epileptic seizure types, but requires a significant amount of resources as long-term Video-EEG monitoring needs to be visually analyzed. Therefore, computer vision based diagnosis support tools are a promising approach. In this article, we utilize infrared (IR) and depth (3D) videos to show the feasibility of a 24/7 novel object and action recognition based deep learning (DL) monitoring system to differentiate between epileptic seizures in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and non-epileptic events. Based on the …

The neural mechanism of non-phase-locked EEG activity in task switching.

Flexible switching between different tasks is an important cognitive ability for humans and it is often studied using the task-switching paradigm. Although the neural mechanisms of task switching have been extensively explored in previous studies using event-related potentials techniques, the activity and process mechanisms of non-phase-locked electroencephalography (EEG) have rarely been revealed. For this reason, this paper discusses the processing of non-phase-locked EEG oscillations in task switching based on frequency-band delineation. First, the roles of each frequency band in local brai

Functional connectivity across dorsal and ventral attention networks in response to task difficulty and experimental pain.

The dorsal and ventral attention networks (DAN & VAN) provide a framework for studying attentional modulation of pain. It has been argued that cognitive demand distracts attention from painful stimuli via top-down reinforcement of task goals (DAN), whereas pain exerts an interruptive effect on cognitive performance via bottom-up pathways (VAN). The current study explores this explanatory framework by manipulating pain and task demand in combination with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and Granger Causal Connectivity Analyses (GCCA). Twenty-one participants played a racing game at

Effects of Anodal tDCS Stimulation in Predictable and Unpredictable Task Switching Performance: The Possible Involvement of the Parietal Cortex.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used to explore the causal relationship between specific brain regions and task switching. However, most studies have focused on the frontal cortex, and only few have examined other related cortices, e.g., the parietal cortex. So far, no prior study has systematically explored the tDCS-induced effect of the parietal cortex in different task switching types. Therefore, the current study mainly used the unilateral anodal-tDCS (a-tDCS) stimulation setting to investigate the possible involvement of the parietal cortex in predictable and unpre

The Neural Correlates of Computational Thinking: Collaboration of Distinct Cognitive Components Revealed by fMRI.

Recent technical advance attracts great attention to the promotion of programming skills, in particular, and computational thinking (CT), in general, as a new intellectual competency. However, the understanding of its cognitive substrates is limited. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the neural correlates of programming to understand the cognitive substrates of CT. Specifically, magnetic resonance imaging signals were collected while the participants were mentally solving programming problems, and we found that CT recruited distributed cortical regions, in

Antisaccades and memory-guided saccades in genetic generalized epilepsy and temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Oculomotor tasks can be used to measure volitional control of behavior sensitive to frontal dysfunction. This study aimed to examine the saccadic eye movement in Genetic Generalized Epilepsy (GGE) which could correlate with the abnormality of the frontal lobe or the thalamo-frontal network. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with GGE were compared with 22 patients with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) and 39 healthy controls. Visual-guided saccades, Antisaccades, and Memory-guided saccades as oculomotor tasks were performed using a novel gaze-tracker designed for clinical practice use. RESU…

Ectopic cortical anaplastic ependymoma: an unusual case report and literature review.

Ependymona occasionally occurs outside the ventricular structures, which is called ectopic ependymona (EE), while pure cortex location is uncommon. However, cortical anaplastic ependymoma (CE) is rare, especially in children. There were only four primary CEs, which is located in the superficial cortex, were reported the age of the patient under 12 years old. The present case is a 20-month-old boy presenting with simple partial seizure was treated in our department. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a fronto-parietal lobe mass of more than 50mm in diameter with mixed signal inte

The loss of episodic memories in retrograde amnesia: single-case and group studies.

Retrograde amnesia in neurological disorders is a perplexing and fascinating research topic. The severity of retrograde amnesia is not well correlated with that of anterograde amnesia, and there can be disproportionate impairments of either. Within retrograde amnesia, there are various dissociations which have been claimed-for example, between the more autobiographical (episodic) and more semantic components of memory. However, the associations of different types of retrograde amnesia are also important, and clarification of these issues is confounded by the fact that retrograde amnesia seems

The new neuropathology of degenerative frontotemporal dementias.

The clinical features and recent developments in the neuropathology of frontotemporal dementia are reviewed. The five main neurodegenerative disorders that underlie the clinical syndrome of frontotemporal dementia are distinguished using immunohistochemistry with antisera to ubiquitin and tau proteins. Motor neuron disease-type dementia is characterised by ubiquitin-immunoreactive intraneuronal inclusions in cortical layer II and the hippocampal dentate granule cells. A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease changes is based upon the presence of neurofibrillary tangles, which immunostain with antibo
