Petal size is a critical agronomic trait influencing pollination efficiency and yield in field crops. However, the cellular basis and upstream hormonal interplay governing petal size in Brassica napus remain unclear. In this study, utilizing a natural variation population of "Zhongshuang 11", we investigated biological mechanisms underlying petal development through integrated phenotypic screening, paraffin section-based cytological analysis, targeted hormone metabolomics, and transcriptome. The results revealed that the single-flower area of large petals (BEP; 13.0 mm2) was significantly larg

WRKY transcription factors (TFs) play key roles in plant defense responses through phytohormone signaling pathways. However, their functions in tropical fruit crops, especially in banana, remain largely unknown. Several WRKY genes from the model plants rice (OsWRKY45) and Arabidopsis (AtWRKY18, AtWRKY60, AtWRKY70) have shown to be attractive TFs for engineering disease resistance. In this study, we isolated four banana cDNAs (MaWRKY18, MaWRKY45, MaWRKY60, and MaWRKY70) with homology to these rice and ArabidopsisWRKY genes. The MaWRKY cDNAs were isolated from the wild banana Musa acuminata ssp.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are central regulators of gene expression and play pivotal roles in plant antiviral defense. In Cucurbitaceae, a globally important crop family including cucumber, melon, and watermelon, viral pathogens such as CGMMV, CMV, and ZYMV represent major constraints on productivity. However, the regulatory complexity of miRNA-mediated antiviral responses in these species remains incompletely understood. This review provides an integrated overview of recent advances in miRNA-guided antiviral immunity in Cucurbitaceae, highlighting the dynamic reprogramming of small RNA pathways upon

Drought stress exacerbated by climate change severely impairs the growth and quality of horticultural crops. Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is an economically vital fruit species, and exploring stress-tolerant genes lays a foundation for its genetic improvement and sustainable cultivation. BiP proteins serve as pivotal endoplasmic reticulum (ER) molecular chaperones and participate widely in plant abiotic stress acclimation, yet the genomic features and drought-associated functions of grapevine BiP family genes remain largely unclear. In this study, three VvBiP members were identified genome-wi

BACKGROUND: Iron (Fe) is indispensable to plants, playing a significant role in life activities such as respiration, chlorophyll biosynthesis, and photosynthetic electron transport. The decrease in pH caused by iron deficiency is related to the activation of H+-ATPase in the root plasma membrane, although the reaction mechanism of this enzyme is not well understood in apples. The H+-ATPase (HA) gene family has been extensively studied in Arabidopsis but is rarely reported in other species.
RESULTS: In this study, 14 HA genes were identified from the apple genome database through whole genome

Developmental transitions occur in the life cycles of all multicellular organisms. Despite their fundamental relevance, the underlying dynamics remain poorly understood. In plants, floral transition is a key developmental process whereby the shoot apical meristem changes from producing leaves to forming flowers. Using quantitative imaging, developmental genetics, and dynamical systems theory, we show that a time-dependent bistable switch between expression of APETALA2, a key floral inhibitor, and the floral activators SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1 and FRUITFULL, can explain the dy

Orthophosphate (P(i)) is an essential but limiting macronutrient for plant growth. Extensive soil P reserves exist in the form of organic P (P(o)), which is unavailable for root uptake until hydrolysed by secretory acid phosphatases (APases). The predominant purple APase (PAP) isozymes secreted by roots of P(i)-deficient (-P(i)) Arabidopsis thaliana were recently identified as AtPAP12 (At2g27190) and AtPAP26 (At5g34850). The present study demonstrated that exogenous P(o) compounds such as glycerol-3-phosphate or herring sperm DNA: (i) effectively substituted for P(i) in supporting the P nutrit

Iron is a trace metal that is found in animals, plants, and the human body. Human iron absorption is hampered by plant iron shortage, which leads to anemia. Leafy vegetables are one of the most direct and efficient sources of iron for humans. Despite the fact that ferrotrophic disorder is common in calcareous soil, however, non-heading Chinese cabbage performs a series of reactions in response to iron deficiency stress that help to preserve iron homeostasis in vivo. In this study, we discovered that iron deficiency stress caused leaf yellowing and impeded plant development in both iron-deficie

Protein phosphatase 2 C (PP2C) family members play important regulatory roles in plant development and abiotic stress responses, yet their functions in mango (Mangifera indica L.) remain poorly understood. In our previous research, a PP2C protein (MiPP2C44) was identified by screening a flowering-related yeast library from mango using flowering-associated proteins. In the present study, the function of MiPP2C44 was further investigated. Expression analysis revealed that MiPP2C44 was highly expressed in leaves and induced by salt and osmotic stress. Subcellular localization analysis showed that

Salt stress severely limits wheat growth and seed yield; however, the mechanisms underlying plant-derived smoke (PDS)-induced salt tolerance remain unclear. The present study performs membrane proteomics to clarify how PDS solution enhances salt tolerance in wheat. Immunoblot analysis of subcellular marker proteins confirms successful enrichment of membrane fractions. Principal component analysis shows that 200 mM NaCl markedly alters membrane-protein composition in wheat roots, whereas 2000 ppm PDS solution largely restores these changes even under salt stress. At the protein level, mitochond

Leaf rolling is considered an important agronomic trait in rice (Oryza sativa). Moderate leaf rolling contributes to erect leaves and a compact plant architecture, thereby improving photosynthetic efficiency and grain yield. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating leaf rolling remain incompletely understood. In this study, we isolated an acl83 mutant in indica rice, which exhibits abaxially curled leaves due to increased area of bulliform cells. Map-based cloning and MutMap analysis revealed the candidate gene LOC_Os05g32110 (ACL83) encoding a COBRA-like protein. Complementation and CRISP

Despite the widespread use of ethephon to induce synchronous flowering in pineapple, the molecular mechanisms underlying its action are still not fully defined. Our previous RNA-seq analysis identified a gibberellin 2-oxidase (GA2ox) gene, AcGA2ox6, as being associated with flowering, but its functional role remained unconfirmed. In this study, we conducted a functional characterization of AcGA2ox6 through bioinformatics analysis, subcellular localization, and overexpression in Arabidopsis. Transgenic Arabidopsis lines exhibited striking phenotypes, including dwarfism, darker green and highly

A dwarfism gene LacDWARF1 was mapped by combined BSA-Seq and comparative genomics analyses to a 65.4 kb physical genomic region on chromosome 05. Dwarf architecture is one of the most important traits utilized in Cucurbitaceae breeding because it saves labor and increases the harvest index. To our knowledge, there has been no prior research about dwarfism in the sponge gourd. This study reports the first dwarf mutant WJ209 with a decrease in cell size and internodes. A genetic analysis revealed that the mutant phenotype was controlled by a single recessive gene, which is designated Lacdwarf1 (

Glutathione (gamma-glu-cys-gly; GSH) is usually present at high concentrations in most living cells, being the major reservoir of non-protein reduced sulfur. Because of its unique redox and nucleophilic properties, GSH serves in bio-reductive reactions as an important line of defense against reactive oxygen species, xenobiotics and heavy metals. GSH is synthesized from its constituent amino acids by two ATP-dependent reactions catalyzed by gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase and glutathione synthetase. In yeast, these enzymes are found in the cytosol, whereas in plants they are located in the cy

The Multidrug and Toxic Compound Extrusion (MATE) gene family are known not only for transport activities but also for regulating response to environmental stresses. Capsaicin (CAP) is an important secondary metabolite in chili peppers. Herein, we identified 52 CaMATE genes in the pepper genome database. The CaMATE proteins exhibiting Polysacc_synt_C and transmembrane domain, evolutionary distributed into four subfamilies and spread across 11 pepper chromosomes. Gene ontology (GO) analysis indicated CaMATE proteins are engaged in drug and ion transport activities. Various hormonal and stress-r

The transcription of the tobacco Tnt1 retrotransposon was previously shown to be induced, in tobacco and in heterologous species, by microbial elicitors and by pathogen infections. We report here that the expression of the Tnt1 promoter is also activated in heterologous species such as tomato and Arabidopsis by wounding, freezing and by other abiotic factors known to induce the plant defence response, such as salicylic acid, CuCl2, or oxidative stress. A similar regulation is observed in tobacco for most treatments. The induction of the Tnt1 promoter expression by wounding remains localized ar

Duplicated genes are thought to follow one of three evolutionary trajectories that resolve their redundancy: neofunctionalization, subfunctionalization, or pseudogenization. Differences in expression patterns have been documented for many duplicated gene pairs and interpreted as evidence of subfunctionalization and a loss of redundancy. However, little is known about the functional impact of such differences and about their molecular basis. Here, we investigate the genetic and molecular basis for the partial loss of redundancy between the two BLADE-ON-PETIOLE genes BOP1 and BOP2 in red shepher

The gaseous plant hormone ethylene is involved in many physiological processes including climacteric fruit ripening, in which it is a key determinant of fruit quality. A detailed model that describes ethylene biochemistry dynamics is missing. Often, kinetic modeling is used to describe metabolic networks or signaling cascades, mostly ignoring the link with transcriptomic data. We have constructed an elegant kinetic model that describes the transfer of genetic information into abundance and metabolic activity of proteins for the entire ethylene biosynthesis pathway during fruit development and

The plant hormone auxin controls almost all aspects of plant development through the gene regulatory properties of auxin response factors (ARFs) which bind so-called auxin responsive elements (AuxREs) in regulatory regions of their target genes. It has been proposed that ARFs interact and cooperate with other transcription factors (TFs) to bind to complex DNA-binding sites harboring cis-elements for several TFs. Complex DNA-binding sites have not been studied systematically for ARF target genes. ETTIN (ETT; ARF3) is a key regulator of gynoecium development. Cooperatively with its interacting p
