BACKGROUND: Selection inversion is the hypothesis for antibiotic resistant inhabitation in bacteria and collateral sensitivity is one of the proposed phenomena for achievement of this hypothesis. The presence of collateral sensitivity associated with the proton motivation pump between the aminoglycosides and beta-lactam group of antibiotics is one of the examples of collateral sensitivity in some studies. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that collateral sensitivity between aminoglycosides and beta-lactam antibiotics associated with proton motivation pump may not be true in all cases.

Guinea pigs are routinely used in the histological evaluation of the cochlea as a method of testing for ototoxicity, but the procedures are very time-consuming. Recent studies have suggested that the use of aminoglycosides to suppress disease-causing nonsense mutations may be a promising new therapy for a large number of genetic diseases. PURPOSE: Assessment of the density of endothelial cells after usage of gentamicin in irrigation-aspiration fluid.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 60 patients subjected to extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. In 30 eyes irrigation was performed with Ringer fluid (group I) and in 30 eyes Ringer fluid with gentamicin (group II) 4 mg gentamicin were added to 500 ml of Ringer fluid obtaining the concentration 8 micrograms/ml. The susceptibilities of various clinical isolates to tobramycin were studied, and the applicability of these data to clinical situations was evaluated. The bactericidal nature of tobramycin was confirmed by killing curves, and the minimal inhibitory concentrations for 500 common pathogens were used to define its spectrum. Isolates inhibited by less than or equal to 5 mug/ml were considered to be sensitive to tobramycin. The clinical response of some patients was examined in relation to the minimal inhibitory concentration for the infecting organism and the serum and urine levels of tobramycin.

Antimicrobial MIC data were obtained for 96 strains of Staphylococcus haemolyticus and the following 11 antimicrobial agents: methicillin, gentamicin, rifampin, fusidic acid, ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, teicoplanin; three experimental glycopeptides, MDL 62,873, MDL 62,208, and MDL 62,224; and an experimental lipoglycopeptide, ramoplanin. Resistance to methicillin and gentamicin was present in over 50% of the strains, although resistance to the other agents was present in less than 10%.
