Bone and soft tissue abnormalities of the upper extremity in diabetes mellitus.

Roentgenographic evidence of bone and soft tissue abnormalities may be noted in the upper extremities of diabetics. Major shoulder changes, typically associated with peripheral neuropathy, include humeral head deformity due to bone resorption, joint space narrowing, subchondral cysts and sclerosis, subluxation, and juxtra-articular soft tissue bone fragments. Charcot-type joints, characterized by severe joint destruction, sclerosis, multiple bone fragments, and soft tissue swelling may occur. Diabetic neuropathy can produce flexion contractures of the hand. Abnormalities not necessarily associ

Seronegative Erosive Arthritis Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) affecting mostly the respiratory system, but several other organs and systems can be involved. Extrapulmonary manifestations and autoimmune phenomena following SARS-CoV-2 infection are frequent events occurring during the first 2 weeks or in later stages of the disease course. These can be expressed as an isolated discovery of autoantibodies, mostly antinuclear or antiphospholipid antibodies, through to full-blown autoimmune organ-specific and systemic diseases. Joint pain is a fre

Degloving Injuries of Upper Extremity: A Strategy with Full Thickness Skin Mesh.

Degloving injuries of the upper extremity during work are rare nowadays, because of effective worker protection devices. However, these devastating injuries still occur today during motor vehicle car accidents and surgeons have to be aware of the possibilities of wound coverage for these large, contaminated wounds. We present two cases of degloving injuries of the hand and entire forearm using degloved skin as meshed full thickness skin graft to cover the entire wound. Two patients were admitted to our hospital, presenting large degloving injuries of the entire forearm and hands. Both patients

Metastases to rare locations as the initial manifestation of non-small cell lung cancer: two case reports.

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer (about 80% of all lung cancers). It grows and spreads more slowly than small cell lung cancer, but still, when the primary tumour treatment starts, about 60% of patients with cancer already have some kind of malignant cell spreading. Metastases to hand bones and skeletal muscles are very rare (metastatic hand lesions represent 0.1% of all osseous metastases while metastases to muscles represent from 0.8 to 16% incidence in autopsy series); in case of metastases in such sites it can be usually expected to find metastases dissemin…

[Radiographic study of the rheumatoid hand and etiopathogenic mechanisms of deformities. Apropos of 100 cases].

X-rays of the hands and wrists of 100 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were compared to those of 65 control subjects matched for age and sex. Osteoarticular destruction was assessed using Larsen's index and by carpal bone deformities; ulnar deviation of the fingers (UDF) and radial deviation of carpal bones (RDC). No significant asymmetry of lesions in the right or left hands can be demonstrated, whatever the subsets of patients and osteoarticular manifestations studied. After a one year course, there is no significant difference between patients and control subjects. Only the

[Analysis of Musculoskeletal Systems and Their Diseases. Integrated treatments for osteoporosis toward harmony of bone and muscle].

Osteoporosis and sarcopenia directly affect healthy life expectancy in elderly people ; therefore, both diseases become social problem around the world. Sarcopenia increases the risk of osteoporotic fracture. Thus, not only agents affecting bone tissue directly but also treatments for sarcopenia are important for management of osteoporosis. Recently, it has been shown that there is an interaction between bone and muscle. Several hormones affect muscle and bone simultaneously. Moreover, myokines secreted from muscle are reported to regulate bone metabolism. On the other hand, several systemic a

Determination of Skeletal Age From Hand Radiographs Using Deep Learning.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons treating skeletally immature patients use skeletal age to determine appropriate surgical strategies. Traditional bone age estimation methods utilizing hand radiographs are time-consuming. PURPOSE: To develop highly accurate/reliable deep learning (DL) models for determination of accurate skeletal age from hand radiographs. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort Study. METHODS: The authors utilized 3 publicly available hand radiograph data sets for model development/validation from (1) the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), (2) the Radiological Hand Pose Estimation (RHPE) data

[Plain radiographs of the wrist and hand].

The purpose of this review is to describe the value of the different radiographic projections of the wrist and hand, provide criteria for quality control and key interpretation points. Plain radiographs of the hand and wrist are still, in this era of cross-sectional imaging, of great importance in the assessment and understanding of bone and joint disorders, particularly in the setting of trauma. Indeed postero-anterior and lateral views have to be completed with additional projections depending on the suspected lesion and clinical presentation.

[Calcium and bone metabolism across women's life stages. The effects of oral contraceptives/low dose estrogen-progestin on bone metabolism, bone mass and geometry in adolescent and young adult women.].

Estrogens have a biphasic action on pubertal and/or adolescent skeletal growth. Low levels of estrogen may increase the periosteal expansion through the increase in the sensitivity of bone for mechanical stimuli and the secretion of IGF-1. On the other hand, high estrogen concentrations may inhibit periosteal bone formation. To use OC/LEP(oral contraceptive/low dose estrogen-progestin) during adolescence, meaning exposure to high levels of estrogen, may prevent the acquisition of physiologic peak of bone mass.

[Osteopoikilosis--rare, hereditary determined, benign bone dysplasia. case report].

Osteopoikilosis is a rare, hereditary disorder of bone tissue. Most frequently this abnormality is asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally on the basis of X-ray images, taken on other occasions. The characteristic radiographic appearance consists of oval or round, well-defined osteosclerotic foci in various sites of skeleton (pelvis, hands and feet, epiphyses of long bones). In the present paper a case of inborn osteopoikilosis in 23-year-old female patient is described. Typical bone abnormalities founding in her mother implicate an inherited character of this disorder.

Use of silastic sheet in Apert's syndactyly.

Patients with Apert's syndrome usually have severe complex syndactyly affecting both hands. Surgical separation of the distal digital bony fusion often exposes bone and cartilage which can cause problems with graft take. A case is presented where the bare divided bone between two digits was kept apart with a silastic sheet. On its removal 4 weeks later, the previously bare bone was covered with a membrane. This was covered with a full thickness skin graft with a complete graft take.

Uptake of ox-LDL by binding to LRP6 mediates oxidative stress-induced BMSCs senescence promoting obesity-related bone loss.

Obesity has long been thought to be a main cause of hyperlipidemia. As a systemic disease, the impact of obesity on organs, tissues and cells is almost entirely negative. However, the relationship between obesity and bone loss is highly controversial. On the one hand, obesity has long been thought to have a positive effect on bone due to increased mechanical loading on the skeleton, conducive to increasing bone mass to accommodate the extra weight. On the other hand, obesity-related metabolic oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in vivo causes a gradual increase of oxidized

[Teriparatide:benefit and safety for bone disease in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis].

Teriparatide, 1-34 parathyroid hormone, is one of effective treatments for osteoporosis. Teriparatide shows an anabolic effect for bone formation, as a result, increases bone mineral density as well as prevention of fractures in the general population. On the other hand, there are a few report about the effect of teriparatide on increase of bone mineral density in maintenance hemodialysis patients. In addition to CKD-MBD, osteoporosis is also an important pathological change in ESRD patients, therefore its safety and efficacy should be discussed in more detail.

Centrifugal osteopetrosis: appendicular sclerosis with relative sparing of the vertebrae.

A previously unreported pattern of bone involvement in autosomal dominant osteopetrosis is described in three affected members of a Vietnamese kindred. The hands, feet, distal bones, and skull were markedly osteosclerotic on radiologic examination. The vertebrae displayed very minimal thickening of the endplates in two of the cases, and no visible involvement in the third. The vertebral bone density (assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) was markedly elevated, suggesting that the spine was not completely spared. This pattern contrasts with the predominantly axial distribution of the re
