OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology of early syphilis among men in Connecticut, a moderate-prevalence region, in 2004.
STUDY DESIGN: The authors conducted a cross-sectional analysis of health department data.
RESULTS: Fifty-five cases were reported from 25 different towns. A majority of cases (82%) were reported among men who have sex with men, and 22% reported coinfection with HIV. In Australia, it is unclear if individuals are being recurrently infected with gonorrhoea, a proxy for identifying core groups. We reviewed all notified gonococcal (GC) infections in South Australia between 1987 and 2003. A case of repeated GC infection is one in which at least one further episode of GC infection occurred after 30 days and within 365 days of the first infection. A growing body of recent research has identified that "rave" attendees are at high risk for the use of "club drugs," such as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or "ecstasy"). Rave attendees, however, comprise only one of several club-going populations. BACKGROUND: To estimate the seroprevalence of HIV infection among sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic attenders.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Unlinked anonymous serologic survey among patients from six STD clinics in 1998.
RESULTS: Among 1,303 patients 3.7% were found to be infected by HIV. Seroprevalences were 48.3% in injecting drug users, 16.7% in homosexual men, 1.3% in prostitutes, 0.9% in heterosexuals from sub-Saharan Africa or Caribbean, and 3.1% in other heterosexuals.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the characteristics of repeat and first-time HIV testers and consider their implications for HIV test counselling.
METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was completed by nearly 1500 people seeking an HIV test between September 1997 and July 1998 at a same-day HIV testing clinic in London, United Kingdom. Repeat testers were those people who had previously tested HIV negative and were returning for another test. Information was collected on self-reported unprotected penetrative sex (UPS) in the previous 3 months and reasons for seeking the present test.

Homosexuality is among the most complex and controversial issues of adolescent health care. Although homosexual activity is common during adolescence, the prevalence and origins of homosexuality per se are poorly understood. Homosexual identity formation is a potentially tumultuous process that begins in childhood and extends through adulthood. The adolescent's experiences may ultimately contribute to a variety of physical and mental health problems. The sociological, psychological, and medical issues are considered, and guidelines for the care of homosexual youths are proposed.

This paper describes the relationship between the experiential aspects of the concept of inner space and of emptiness. This is based on the change of inner experience of a borderline patient during analysis from one of empty space to one of real space. The analysis is described and the relationship of inner space to schizoid and depressive emptiness elaborated, together with the emergence of a healthy inner space (positive emptiness). The components of the capacity to experience inner space from infancy onwards are enumerated and discussed.
