Abbreviated Combined MR Protocol: A New Faster Strategy for Characterizing Breast Lesions.

BACKGROUND: The use of an abbreviated magnetic resonance (MR) protocol has been recently proposed for cancer screening. The aim of our study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of an abbreviated MR protocol combining short TI inversion recovery (STIR), turbo-spin-echo (TSE)-T2 sequences, a pre-contrast T1, and a single intermediate (3 minutes after contrast injection) post-contrast T1 sequence for characterizing breast lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 470 patients underwent breast MR examination for screening, problem solving, or preoperative staging. Two experienced radiologists

Significant Artifact Reduction at 1.5T and 3T MRI by the Use of a Cochlear Implant with Removable Magnet: An Experimental Human Cadaver Study.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implants (CIs) are standard treatment for postlingually deafened individuals and prelingually deafened children. This human cadaver study evaluated diagnostic usefulness, image quality and artifacts in 1.5T and 3T magnetic resonance (MR) brain scans after CI with a removable magnet. METHODS: Three criteria (diagnostic usefulness, image quality, artifacts) were assessed at 1.5T and 3T in five cadaver heads with CI. The brain magnetic resonance scans were performed with and without the magnet in situ. The criteria were analyzed by two blinded neuroradiologists, with focus on

Interictal photosensitivity associates with altered brain structure in patients with episodic migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine attacks manifest with hypersensitivities to light, sound, touch and odor. Some people with migraine have photosensitivity between migraine attacks, suggesting persistent alterations in the integrity of brain regions that process light. Although functional neuroimaging studies have shown visual stimulus induced "hyperactivation" of visual cortex regions in migraineurs between attacks, whether photosensitivity is associated with alterations in brain structure is unknown. METHODS: Levels of photosensitivity were evaluated using the Photosensitivity Assessment Questionnaire i

Early small vessel disease affects frontoparietal and cerebellar hubs in close correlation with clinical symptoms--a resting-state fMRI study.

Cerebral small vessel disease, mainly characterized by white matter lesions and lacunes, has a high clinical impact as it leads to vascular dementia. Recent studies have shown that this disease impairs frontoparietal networks. Here, we apply resting-state magnetic resonance imaging and data-driven whole-brain imaging analysis methods (eigenvector centrality) to investigate changes of the functional connectome in early small vessel disease. We show reduced connectivity in frontoparietal networks, whereas connectivity increases in the cerebellum. These functional changes are closely related to w

Parastigmatic corneal surfaces.

Principal meridians of the corneal vertex of the human ocular system are not always orthogonal. To study these irregular surfaces at the vertex, which have principal meridians with an angle different from 90°, we attempt to define so-called parastigmatic surfaces; these surfaces allow us to correct several classes of irregular astigmatism, with nonorthogonal principal meridians, using a simple refractive surface. We will create a canonical surface to describe the surfaces of the human cornea with a short and simple formula, using two additional parameters to the current prescription: the angle

Disrupted functional connectivity of the hippocampus in patients with hyperthyroidism: evidence from resting-state fMRI.

OBJECTIVE: The hippocampus expresses high levels of thyroid hormone receptors, suggesting that hippocampal functions, including cognition and regulation of mood, can be disrupted by thyroid pathology. Indeed, structural and functional alterations within the hippocampus have been observed in hyperthyroid patients. In addition to internal circuitry, hippocampal processing is dependent on extensive connections with other limbic and neocortical structures, but the effects of hyperthyroidism on functional connectivity (FC) with these areas have not been studied. The purpose of this study was to inv

[Histopathological particle algorithm. Particle identification in the synovia and the SLIM].

BACKGROUND: In the histopathological diagnostics of synovitis and the synovium-like interface membrane (SLIM) the identification of crystals and crystal-like deposits and the associated inflammatory reactions play an important role. The multitude of endogenous crystals, the range of implant materials and material combinations, and the variability in the formation process of different particles explain the high morphological particle heterogeneity which complicates the diagnostic identification of diagnostic particles. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A simple histopathological particle algorithm has

A new total body scanning system for automatic change detection in multiple pigmented skin lesions.

The detection of newly appearing and changing pigmented skin lesions (PSLs) is essential for timely diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma. Total body skin examination (TBSE) procedures, currently practiced for this purpose, can be extremely time-consuming for patients with numerous lesions. In addition, these procedures are prone to subjectivity when selecting PSLs for baseline image comparison, increasing the risk of missing a developing cancer. To address this issue, we propose a new photogrammetry-based total body scanning system allowing for skin surface image acquisition using cross-polarized l

Histopathological image analysis for centroblasts classification through dimensionality reduction approaches.

We present two novel automated image analysis methods to differentiate centroblast (CB) cells from noncentroblast (non-CB) cells in digital images of H&E-stained tissues of follicular lymphoma. CB cells are often confused by similar looking cells within the tissue, therefore a system to help their classification is necessary. Our methods extract the discriminatory features of cells by approximating the intrinsic dimensionality from the subspace spanned by CB and non-CB cells. In the first method, discriminatory features are approximated with the help of singular value decomposition (SVD), wher

Infratentorial gray matter atrophy and excess in primary craniocervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Primary craniocervical dystonia (CCD) is generally attributed to functional abnormalities in the cortico-striato-pallido-thalamocortical loops, but cerebellar pathways have also been implicated in neuroimaging studies. Hence, our purpose was to perform a volumetric evaluation of the infratentorial structures in CCD. METHODS: We compared 35 DYT1/DYT6 negative patients with CCD and 35 healthy controls. Cerebellar volume was evaluated using manual volumetry (DISPLAY software) and infratentorial volume by voxel based morphometry of gray matter (GM) segments derived from T1 weighted 3

Brain white matter microstructure is associated with susceptibility to motion-induced nausea.

Nausea is associated with significant morbidity, and there is a wide range in the propensity of individuals to experience nausea. The neural basis of the heterogeneity in nausea susceptibility is poorly understood. Our previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study in healthy adults showed that a visual motion stimulus caused activation in the right MT+/V5 area, and that increased sensation of nausea due to this stimulus was associated with increased activation in the right anterior insula. For the current study, we hypothesized that individual differences in visual motion-induced

Cerebral perfusion changes in migraineurs: a voxelwise comparison of interictal dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI measurements.

INTRODUCTION: The increased risk of cerebro- and cardiovascular disease in migraineurs may be the consequence of a systemic condition affecting whole body vasculature. At cerebrovascular level, this may be reflected by interictal global or regional cerebral perfusion abnormalities. Whether focal perfusion changes occur during interictal migraine has not been convincingly demonstrated. METHODS: We measured brain perfusion with dynamic susceptibility contrast magnetic resonance imaging (DSC-MRI) in 29 interictal female migraineurs (12 migraine with aura (MA), 17 migraine without aura (MO)), and

Could clinical ultrasound improve the fitting of spinal orthosis for the patients with AIS?

PURPOSE: This study aimed to improve the effectiveness of orthotic treatment for the patients with AIS using the three-dimensional clinical ultrasound (3D CUS) method in which the optimal location of pressure pad of spinal orthosis was determined with the assistance of ultrasound image analysis. METHODS: By means of 3D CUS method, the spinous process angle (SPA) could be traced and used as a clinical parameter to estimate the Cobb's angle in order to determine the location of pressure pad. Twenty-one patients (test group) and 22 patients (control group) were recruited to the ultrasound-assist

Volumetric ultrasound and computer-assisted analysis at the point-of-care: a musculoskeletal exemplar.

In this paper we motivate the hypothesis that the use of volumetric ultrasound imaging and automated image analysis tools would improve clinical workflows as well as outcomes at the point-of-care. To make our case, this paper presents results from a rheumatoid arthritis (RA) study where several image analysis techniques have been applied to volumetric ultrasound, highlighting anatomy of interest to better understand disease progression. Pathologies related to RA in joints, manifest themselves commonly as changes in the bone (e.g. erosions) and the region enclosed by the joint-capsule (e.g. syn

Fully automatic stitching of diffusion tensor images in spinal cord.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has become an important tool for studying the spinal cord pathologies. To enable high resolution imaging for modern studies, the DTI technique utilizes a small field of view (FOV) to capture partial human spinal cords. However, normal aging and many other diseases which affect the entire spinal cord increase the desire of acquiring the continuous full-view of the spinal cord. To overcome this problem, this paper presents a novel pipeline for automatic stitching of three-dimensional (3D) DTI of different portions of the spinal cord. The proposed technique consists

Completely automated multiresolution edge snapper--a new technique for an accurate carotid ultrasound IMT measurement: clinical validation and benchmarking on a multi-institutional database.

The aim of this paper is to describe a novel and completely automated technique for carotid artery (CA) recognition, far (distal) wall segmentation, and intima-media thickness (IMT) measurement, which is a strong clinical tool for risk assessment for cardiovascular diseases. The architecture of completely automated multiresolution edge snapper (CAMES) consists of the following two stages: 1) automated CA recognition based on a combination of scale-space and statistical classification in a multiresolution framework and 2) automated segmentation of lumen-intima (LI) and media-adventitia (MA) int

Evidence for a motor somatotopy in the cerebellar dentate nucleus--an FMRI study in humans.

Previous anatomical studies in monkeys have shown that forelimb motor representation is located caudal to hindlimb representation within the dorso-rostral dentate nucleus. Here we investigate human dentate nucleus motor somatotopy by means of ultra-highfield (7 T) functional magnetic brain imaging (fMRI). Twenty five young healthy males participated in the study. Simple finger and foot movement tasks were performed to identify dentate nucleus motor areas. Recently developed normalization procedures for group analyses were used for the cerebellar cortex and the cerebellar dentate nucleus. Corti

Effects of primary aberrations on the fluorescence depletion patterns of STED microscopy.

Effects of primary aberrations including spherical aberration, coma and astigmatism on the three fluorescence depletion patterns mainly used in stimulated emission of depletion (STED) microscopy are investigated by using vectorial integral. The three depletion patterns are created by inserting a vortex phase plate, a central half-wavelength plate or a semi-circular half-wavelength mask within Gaussian beam respectively. Attention is given to the modification of the shape, peak intensity, the central intensity of the dark hole and the hole size of these depletion patterns in the presence of pri

Data acquisition analysis for femoral morphometric X-ray absorptiometry.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is a contributing factor of hip fracture risk. Other factors, such as lifestyle, the propensity for falls, and femoral geometry may influence the risk of hip fracture. The DMS Lexxos densitometer, a dual-energy X-ray densitometer can produce either a single-energy X-ray or a BMD image. The purpose of this study was to evaluate which of these 2 images enables the best detection to make femoral morphometry measurements. Spatial resolution, contrast, and noise were evaluated separately. A contrast-detail phantom was also used for the purpose of overall visual analysis.
