Impulse control disorders in Parkinson disease: a multicenter case--control study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess factors associated with impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson disease (PD) using a multicenter case--control design. METHODS: Patients enrolled in the DOMINION study, a multicenter study assessing the cross-sectional frequency of ICDs in PD, were eligible to participate in the case--control study. PD patients with and without an ICD (n = 282 each) (compulsive gambling, buying, sexual behavior, and eating) were matched individually on age, gender, and dopamine agonist treatment. Subjects were assessed with a comprehensive neurological, psychiatric, and cognitive as

Impulsiveness, locus of control, motivation and problem gambling.

A questionnaire consisting of demographic items, questions about gambling behavior, the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), a depression inventory, the Eysenck Impulsiveness Questionnaire, Levenson's Internality, Powerful Others and Chance Scales of locus of control and the Gambling Motivation Scale, was completed by a non-random sample of 147 New Zealand university students who gambled for money, median age 24 years. Approximately 17 of the sample was classified as problem gamblers, the rest as non-problem gamblers. Multivariate analysis of variance showed that there were significant differenc

The DSM-III-R impulse control disorders not elsewhere classified: clinical characteristics and relationship to other psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The authors reviewed available studies of DSM-III-R impulse control disorders not elsewhere classified in order to determine the … ports which either indicated use of operational diagnostic criteria or provided descriptions of the impulsive behavior detailed enough that patients could be judged as probably meeting the DSM-III-R criteria. RESULTS: Although different impulse control disorders have different sex ratios, all have similar ages at onset and courses. Studies on phenomenology, family …

Validation of the English Social Attunement Questionnaire: Associations with Substance Use, Impulsivity, and Sensation Seeking across the Lifespan.

INTRODUCTION: Our social environment strongly influences behaviors like substance use and sensation seeking. While most research focuses on group pressure and conformity, the role of social attunement - the tendency to align with one's social environment for social reward without explicit pressure - has been largely overlooked. METHODS: This study evaluated the English version of the Social Attunement Questionnaire (SAQ) and examined its links to age, alcohol and cannabis use, impulsivity, and sensation seeking (N = 447; 54.5% female). RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable

From feather pecking to immunity: Immune differences between lines selected for high and low feather pecking.

Feather pecking (FP) is a serious behavioral disorder in laying hens, leading to feather damage, skin lesions, and often resulting in cannibalism. The mechanisms underlying FP are not clear yet, but recently the role of the immune system as a cause has been discussed. In humans, the interrelation between personality traits and the immune system is well-documented, with impulsivity and hyperactivity linked to distinct alterations in blood immune cell numbers and to elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Similarly, FP in hens is associated with impulsivity and hyperactivity, suggesting a

Hypersexuality: A Critical Review and Introduction to the "Sexhavior Cycle".

An empirical review of hypersexuality is timely as "compulsive sexual behavior" is being considered as an impulse control disorder for inclusion in the forthcoming International Classification of Diseases, 11th ed. Specifically, hypersexuality has been conceptualized in the literature as the inability to regulate one's sexual behavior that is a source of significant personal distress. Various theoretical models have been posited in an attempt to understand the occurrence of hypersexuality, although disagreement about these divergent conceptualizations of the condition has made assessment and t

Comparison of diagnostic criteria for attention deficit disorders in a German elementary school sample.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares teacher-reported prevalence rates for disruptive behavior disorders using DSM-IV, DSM-III-R, and DSM-III criteria within the same population of elementary school students and examines the relationships between DSM "subtypes" and academic performance, perceived behavior problems, and demographic variables. METHOD: Teacher rating scales were obtained on 1,077 students in five rural and five urban public schools in Regensburg, Germany. Rating scales included DSM-III-R items (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder),

tDCS in Addiction and Impulse Control Disorders.

The study of addiction and impulsion control disorders has shown that behaviors of seeking and consumption of addictive substances are subserved by neurobiological alterations specifically related to brain networks for reward, stress, and executive control, representing the brain's adaptation to the continued use of an addictive substance. In parallel, studies using neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have demonstrated promising effects in modulating cognitive and motor functions. This review aims to describe the neurobiology of addiction and some

Neurocognitive Findings in Onychophagia (Pathological Nail Biting).

A notable number of people struggle to control the desire to bite their nails, resulting in impairment and distress. Understanding this behavior and the inability to control it has received little research attention. One possible mechanism to understand nail biting is through the use of neurocognitive assessments. Neurocognitive assessments of pathological nail biting, however, are lacking. This analysis assesses the clinical presentation and neurocognitive profile of adults with nail biting relative to participants without nail biting. A total of 87 participants (aged 18-29 years) were recrui

A developmental neuroscience of borderline pathology: emotion dysregulation and social baseline theory.

Theoretical and empirical research has linked poor emotion regulation abilities with dysfunctional frontolimbic circuitry. Consistent with this, research on borderline personality disorder (BPD) finds that frontolimbic dysfunction is a predominant neural substrate underlying the disorder. Emotion regulation is profoundly compromised in BPD. However, BPD is also associated with broad impairment across multiple domains, including impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and cognitive functioning. To date, BPD research has focused largely on single areas of dysfunction, failing to account fo

Increased prevalence of impulse control disorder symptoms in endocrine diseases treated with dopamine agonists: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) have been described as a side effect of dopamine agonists (DAs) in neurological as well as endocrine conditions. Few studies have evaluated the neuropsychological effect of DAs in hyperprolactinemic patients, and these have reported a relationship between DAs and ICDs. Our objective was to screen for ICD symptoms in individuals with DA-treated endocrine conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 132 patients with pituitary disorders treated with DAs (DA exposed), as well as 58 patients with pituitary disorders

Comparing impulsiveness, hostility, and depression in borderline personality disorder and bipolar II disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar II disorder can be differentiated from each other and from major depressive disorder (MDD) by comparing depression severity, impulsiveness, and hostility in mood disorder patients with and without BPD. METHOD: One hundred seventy-three patients with either MDD or bipolar II disorder were enrolled from a larger sample admitted to a multisite project on mood disorders and suicidal behavior conducted from June 1996 through June 2006. Patients were divided into 4 groups: MDD with BPD, MDD without an Axis II diagnosi

Impulse control and related disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Neuropsychiatric disorders are common among patients with Parkinson's disease and may appear in any stage of the disease. However, these disorders often go undiagnosed and receive insufficient treatment. Observations in recent years have revealed that dopamine replacement therapy may lead to the development or worsening of conditions, such as gambling disorder, compulsive sexual behavior, compulsive buying and binge eating, in addition to punding and dopamine dysregulation syndrome. The pathophysiology of these disorders seems to be related to abnormal dopaminergic stimulation of the basal reg

Conceptualizing distress tolerance as goal pursuit.

Distress tolerance is widely studied in the empirical literature, but the construct remains conceptually ambiguous. This article presents a conceptual analysis that diagnoses problems with existing definitions and proposes a new theoretical approach. The proposal anchors distress tolerance to the tension between high-value goals (that matter over the long run) and distress-driven impulses (that matter momentarily). The theory relies on a heuristic called a distress tolerance conflict (DTC), which organizes the affective, cognitive, and behavioral processes involved in enacting distress toleran

Self-report vs. laboratory measures of aggression as predictors of substance abuse.

Measures of aggressive behavior, antisocial personality, criminality, and impulsivity were obtained on a sample of 85 drug abusing volunteers for studies at the Addiction Research Center in Baltimore. Measures included the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, Diagnostic Interview Schedule Antisocial Personality Disorder diagnosis, Elliott-Huizinga Lifetime Events Scale, Eysenck's Impulsiveness-Venturesomeness-Empathy scales, and a laboratory measure of aggression patterned after the Buss 'aggression machine'. All of the self-report measures of aggression and antisocial personality were moderately

Self-reported and neuropsychological measures of impulsivity in pathological gambling.

Pathological Gambling is an impulse control disorder. Impulsivity has been investigated separately by neuropsychological tests and self-report scales. Although some studies have tried to correlate these approaches, their interaction has not been sufficiently explored among pathological gamblers (PG). In this study, we have compared 214 PG (162 with comorbidity and 52 with no comorbidity) to 82 healthy volunteers regarding the reaction time and number of errors at Go/No-go tasks, and scores on the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS). PG have committed more errors at the Go/No-go tasks and present

Splitting as a consequence of severe abuse in childhood.

Clinical data suggest that Kernberg's description of splitting as a defense mechanism is useful in conceptualizing the psychological consequences of abuse in childhood in certain patients. The splitting in these patients is similar to his description of splitting in borderline patients in that it compartmentalizes and sequesters certain overwhelming and painful ego states accompanying negative introjects of the betraying primary object and the betrayed self. These sequestered introjects, furthermore, act as automatons, generating behaviors that arbitrarily re-enact their content even though th

Novel circuit biomarker of impulsivity and craving in male heroin-dependent individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The striatum mediates reward processing in addiction, and previous fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies have r … layed decreased structural connectivity of the striatum-mOFC circuit and higher impulsivity. Higher impulsive behavior was associated with decreased left striatal circuit connectivity. These findings suggest that the striatal circuit tract strengths might be a novel potential biomarker in heroin and, potentially, general opioid addiction.
