Evaluating voluntary care seeking effects on COVID-19 outcomes and health system costs.

In an endemic COVID-19 setting with reduced enforcement measures, intervention success increasingly depends on voluntary compliance behaviors shaped by risk perceptions and population immunity. We used a previously developed behavior adaptation model, calibrated to Omicron wave data (February 1-May 31, 2022) in South Korea, to compare health outcomes (cumulative incidence, treated cases) and costs (vaccination, testing, treatment) under two scenarios: only mandatory compliance versus a combination of mandatory and voluntary compliance. The model included constant (mandatory) rates, independent

Surgeon perceptions and utilization of evidence-based medicine.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge translation approaches for augmenting the use of evidence in medical practice require identifying potential barriers to implementation. Important but poorly understood determinants of the uptake of knowledge translation tools are the intrinsic characteristics of health professionals themselves. In this study, the authors explored how surgeons' perceptions of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and their behavior in response to new evidence affect their awareness and use of evidence-based summaries designed for application at the point of care. METHODS: Faculty surgeons in two N

Women's Educating and Coping Strategies for Cultivating Supportive Web-Based Spaces for Discussing Sexual and Reproductive Health: Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Stigma surrounding women's sexual and reproductive health (SRH) often prevents them from seeking essential care. In South Korea, unmarried women face strong cultural taboos, increasing their risk for conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and cervical cancer. While many unmarried women turn to web-based communities for support, these spaces frequently expose them to microaggressions, further discouraging their access to health care and worsening their health risks. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to encourage a safe space for seeking support on the culturally taboo topic

Scoping Review of Disease Surveillance Practices and Veterinary Care Use in Small-Scale Swine Farms in the United States.

The recent spread of foreign animal diseases (FADs) such as foot-and-mouth disease and African swine fever emphasizes the need to conduct comprehensive surveillance to detect a potential disease introduction as soon as possible. The United States is currently free of many important FADs of swine, and many preparedness initiatives have raised awareness amongst the commercial, intensive swine industry. However, the awareness and engagement of small-scale swine farmers regarding disease surveillance and passive reporting is not well known. This scoping review was conducted to identify and charact

Transauricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Electroencephalographic Assessment in Disorders of Consciousness.

The technique of transauricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is methodologically applied by placing electrodes on the auricular region, specifically on the cymba, cavum, or tragus, to stimulate the vagus nerve non-invasively. Additionally, the earlobe, which is not innervated by the vagus nerve, can serve as a placebo site for control stimulation. The stimulation intensity is adjusted between 0.5-3.0 mA, with session durations ranging from 20-60 min, administered either daily or weekly, depending on the study protocol. The total number of sessions varies according to the protocol, extending

Treatment utilization among persons with opioid use disorder in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The United States is experiencing an opioid overdose epidemic. Treatment use data from diverse racial/ethnic groups with opioid use disorder (OUD) are needed to inform treatment expansion efforts. METHODS: We examined demographic characteristics and behavioral health of persons aged ≥12 years that met criteria for past-year OUD (n=6,125) in the 2005-2013 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (N=503,101). We determined the prevalence and correlates of past-year use of alcohol/drug use treatment and opioid-specific treatment to inform efforts for improving OUD treatment. RESULTS:

Online community discourse on spinal cord injury research.

BACKGROUND: Public perceptions of spinal cord injury (SCI) research can influence trust in scientific advancements and therapeutic interventions. Social media is a useful tool to provide insight into these perceptions and related values. This study examines comments to posts pertaining to SCI research reports on a widely used social media platform. METHOD: We used search term 'spinal cord injury' to collect posts and associated top-level comments spanning 2016-2023 from Reddit. Posts were included if they contained research reports on one of the following SCI interventions: biologic and synth

Analysis of Bystander Behavior Towards Intimate Partner Violence via Peerformance.

This study of a South Asian community in the midwestern USA examines what bystanders do when they witness an incident of intimate partner violence (IPV). Because of ethical and safety constraints, in lieu of observation in a natural setting, data were collected at a Peerformance, a peer-led IPV prevention program, using the forum theatre method introduced in Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. Event attendees were invited to respond to an IPV incident enacted by peer educators in which a controlling husband's behavior escalates to the point of suggesting physical violence. Using a grounde

mHealth information for migrants: an e-health intervention for internal migrants in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Socio-economic development in Vietnam has resulted in increased internal migration particularly among young women seeking employment opportunities in cities. Vietnamese female migrants who enter new environments often encounter the loss or neglect of their right to access sexual and reproductive health services. To address this, a mobile health (mHealth) intervention model was implemented over 12 months (2013-2014) in a factory in the Long Bien industrial zone of Hanoi, Vietnam. METHODS: The intervention provided sexual and reproductive health services for female migrants through

Why increasing availability of ART is not enough: a rapid, community-based study on how HIV-related stigma impacts engagement to care in rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is a known barrier to HIV testing and care. Because access to antiretroviral therapy reduces overt illness and mortality, some scholars theorized that HIV-related stigma would decrease as treatment availability increased. However, the association between ART accessibility and stigma has not been as straightforward as originally predicted. METHODS: We conducted a "situational analysis"--a rapid, community-based qualitative assessment to inform a combination HIV prevention program in high prevalence communities. In the context of this community-based research, we conducted se

Finding better solutions to end bullying: what an organizalion can do .

In order to stop bullying we must recognize and assess the problem, discuss it, educate and train employees, and create zero tolerance policies and formal/informal complaint processes, ensuring that they are fair and safe for the person making a complaint. This series of articles has touched on the very real issue of bullying in our workplaces and among our professional peers in midwifery. My personal goal for this series was to find the essence of the lesson in bullying and how it can become a positive subject. Once it has been "named" and discussed and organizations try to change the tide an

Clustering of behavioral and chronic health risk factors and their association with self-reported health and cardiovascular disease outcome among adults in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: In 2024, North Carolina (NC) had a smoking rate of 17.2% and a higher-than-average rate of binge and heavy drinking. These behaviors often cluster with other health risks such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes, thus leading to significant disparities in cardiovascular, physical, and mental health outcomes across the state. However, limited research has examined these clustering patterns within North Carolina. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to investigate the associations between latent class membership, defined by clustering of behavioral and chronic health risk fac

Health Risks Among Rural Aging Populations in China: A Cross-Sectional Study of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices in Chronic Disease Management.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, creating significant health risks and adding strain to healthcare systems, particularly within rapidly aging societies. Rural older adults are especially vulnerable due to limited healthcare resources, lower socioeconomic status, and weaker support networks. Guided by the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) framework, this study aims to investigate chronic disease management behaviors among older patients in rural China and identify factors shaping their KAP dimensions to inform risk-responsive intervent

Determinants of intrinsic capacity among older adults in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic capacity (IC), as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), represents the composite of an individual's physical and mental capacities and forms a cornerstone of the healthy aging framework. Understanding its determinants is essential for designing effective interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where population aging is accelerating amid limited resources and fragmented health systems. Mapping these determinants supports evidence-based strategies that enhance functional ability and resilience among older adults. OBJECTIVE: This sc
