Preparation and insecticidal activities of betulin-cinnamic acid-related hybrid compounds and insights into the stress response of Plutella xylostella L.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and increasing intensification of insect pest resistance greatly shortens the service life of commercial insecticides. Hence, the continuous development of novel insecticides is extremely necessary. Discovering new insecticide molecules based on natural products with insecticidal activity has been a popular technique and has made outstanding contributions in this field. RESULTS: A series of betulin-cinnamic acid-related hybrid compounds was prepared by molecular hybridization through the bridge of acyloxy groups and their chemical structures were unambiguously confir…

Dual-coated emamectin benzoate nano-formulation with enhanced systemic translocation and insecticidal activity based on lignin/urea-formaldehyde.

To enhance pesticide utilization efficiency and environmental safety, this study developed a dual-coated emamectin benzoate sustained-release nano-formulation (EB@Lignin-C14/UF) using lignin tetradecanoate (Lignin-C14) and urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) as carriers. Through esterification modification to improve lignin hydrophobicity as the inner layer and UF cross-linked network as the outer barrier, the uniform spherical nanoparticles with average size of 95.5 nm were prepared via high-speed stirring-ultrasonic dispersion. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability. The

Phytochemical and Insecticidal Activity of Some Thyme Plants' Essential Oils Against Cryptoblabes gnidiella and Scirtothrips mangiferae on Mango Inflorescences.

Mango fruits are one of the strategic fruit crops in different countries that are attacked by several serious pests such as Cryptoblabes gnidiella and Scirtothrips mangiferae. Natural extracts, especially essential oils, provide several promising insecticide agents to control different insects as an alternative to synthetic insecticides. Using Clevenger-type hydrodistillation, the essential oils of five thyme plants-Thymus vulgaris, Origanum vulgare, Thymus argenteus, Thymus citriodorus, and Origanum syriacum-from Saudi Arabia and Egypt were extracted, and GC/MS analysis was performed. In addi…

Insecticide resistance and the role of target-site insensitivity mutations among malaria vectors in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, which is transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), remains a critical global public health problem. Vector control interventions, particularly insecticide-based strategies, are pivotal for malaria control and elimination, as the efficacy of these interventions is heavily dependent on the high susceptibility of Anopheles mosquitoes to insecticides. However, insecticide resistance in mosquito vectors poses a considerable threat to the sustainability of these control efforts. Notably, no synthesis data on insecticide resistance have been reported in China in r…

Cascades of effectiveness of next-generation insecticide-treated nets against malaria, from entomological trials to real-life conditions.

As insecticide resistance spreads in Africa, next-generation insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are increasingly being deployed to protect vulnerable populations against malaria. While these nets provide greater entomological efficacy against resistant mosquitoes, their effectiveness against malaria transmission also depends on other factors, such as durability, access, usage, and activity patterns of hosts and vectors. Here, we quantify the impact of two next-generation ITNs, namely Interceptor®G2 (chlorfenapyr-pyrethroid) and Olyset® Plus (piperonyl butoxide-pyrethroid), in a cascade from entom

The Use of Disabled Insecticidal Proteins (DIPs) to Investigate the Interaction Between Aedes aegypti-Active Toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis.

A variety of pesticidal proteins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis exhibit activity against the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti and are used to control this insect vector. Several of these proteins, including Cry1Ca and Cry2Aa, additionally have activity against lepidopteran insects. Furthermore, the specificity of Cry2Aa has recently been shown to depend on domain I of the Cry protein, whereas it is generally recognized that domain II is the primary specificity-determining domain. This work has made use of disabled forms of three Cry proteins (Cry2Aa, Cry1Ca and Cry11Aa) a

Roles of spermary-specific carboxylesterases in Nilaparvata lugens reproduction: Opposite between insecticide-induced upregulation and resistance-associated overexpression.

Seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) in insect males are critical for reproduction, being transported into female ovary. In Nilaparvata lugens, a significant rice pest, seven spermary-specific carboxylesterases (CarEs) were found abundantly in SFPs, with over-expression in males of an imidacloprid-resistant (RES) strain compared to a susceptible (SUS) strain. This study aimed to evaluate roles of spermary-specific CarEs in N. lugens reproduction, especially in the reproduction disadvantage in RES. Sublethal doses of three insecticides significantly impacted N. lugens reproduction, concomitant with up…

Organophosphate Insecticide Malathion Induces Alzheimer's Disease-Like Cognitive Impairment in Mice: Evidence of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis.

Evidence suggests that exposure to organophosphate pesticides increases the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, but the mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of malathion on Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like symptoms at environmentally relevant concentrations using wild-type (WT) and APP/PS1 transgenic mouse models. Results showed that malathion exposure induced AD-like cognitive impairment, amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation, and neuroinflammation in WT mice, with worsened symptoms in APP/PS1 mice. Mechanistic studies revealed that malathion induced AD-like gut microbiota dysbio

Role of CYP9E2 and a long non-coding RNA gene in resistance to a spinosad insecticide in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata.

Spinosads are insecticides used to control insect pests, especially in organic farming where limited tools for pest management exist. However, resistance has developed to spinosads in economically important pests, including Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata. In this study, we used bioassays to determine spinosad sensitivity of two field populations of CPB, one from an organic farm exposed exclusively to spinosad and one from a conventional farm exposed to a variety of insecticides, and a reference insecticide naïve population. We found the field populations exhibited sign…

Embryonic exposure to acetamiprid insecticide induces CD68-positive microglia and Purkinje cell arrangement abnormalities in the cerebellum of neonatal rats.

Concerns have been raised regarding acetamiprid (ACE), a neonicotinoid insecticide, due to its potential neurodevelopmental toxicity. ACE, which is structurally similar to nicotine, acts as an agonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) and resists degradation by acetylcholinesterase. Furthermore, ACE has been reported to disrupt neuronal transmission and induce developmental neurotoxicity and ataxia in animal models. However, the prenatal ACE exposure and its pathological changes, including impacts on motor control, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of ACE
