Structural failure in cereal stems under climate extremes: insights from barley head loss.

Structural failure of cereal stems during late-season climate extremes is a critical determinant of yield stability. In barley, breakage of the stem below the spike, known as head loss, leads to major yield losses, particularly in hot and dry regions where the crop is widely grown. Despite a predicted increase in head loss risk due to global warming, current understanding of the genetic, physiological, anatomical, and environmental factors that control head loss remains limited. Overcoming these knowledge gaps is essential to providing a systems-level strategy for barley breeders to develop cl

Brain-based gene expression and corresponding behavioural relevance of risk genes for broad antisocial behaviour.

Antisocial behaviour (ASB) involves persistent irresponsible, delinquent activities violating rights and safety of others. A meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies revealed significant genetic associations with ASB, yet their brain expression patterns and behavioural relevance remain unclear. Our investigation of fifteen genes associated with ASB examined their biological role and distribution across tissues, integrating post-mortem brain sample data from the Allen-Human-Brain Atlas and the Genotype-Tissue Expression project. We found that these genes were differentially expressed in

Mechanisms of T-cell Depletion in Tumors and Advances in Clinical Research.

T lymphocytes (T cells) are essential components of the adaptive immune system that play a vital role in identifying and eliminating infected and tumor cells. In tumor immunotherapy, T cells have emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy due to their high specificity, potent cytotoxic capability, long-lasting immune memory, and adaptability within immunotherapeutic approaches. However, tumors can evade the immune system by depleting T cells through various mechanisms, such as inhibitory receptor signaling, metabolic exhaustion, and physical barriers within the tumor microenvironment. This re

Melanoma and melanocytic nevi in pregnancy.

A changing melanocytic nevus during pregnancy should be biopsied promptly. For women with the dysplastic nevus syndrome, there may be more changes in nevi during pregnancy, requiring close monitoring. Melanoma is one of the most common malignancies that occurs during pregnancy. Those diagnosed with a localized melanoma before, during, or after pregnancy do not have an altered prognosis; however, a few studies have noted thicker melanomas and poorer prognosis when melanoma is diagnosed in the first year postpartum, possibly due to a delay in diagnosis. Although local excision of melanomas can b

Effective Therapeutic Strategies to Prevent Frailty and Falls in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

Frailty and the consequent risk of falls represent significant challenges for community-dwelling older adults, often leading to severe injuries, functional decline, and loss of independence. Falls typically result from multiple interacting risk factors, many of which are modifiable through targeted interventions. This mini-review focuses on evidence from randomized controlled trials evaluating effective therapeutic strategies to prevent frailty and falls. Comprehensive assessment and management of modifiable risk factors have been shown to significantly reduce fall incidence. Key interventions

[Musculoskeletal disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease].

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes posture alterations with trunk anteflexion and the flexion of the hip and knee joints, leading to changes in the musculoskeletal system (MS). MS disorders in Parkinson's Disease (PD) are linked to two primary mechanisms: they can be a direct result of the motor symptoms of PD and may also serve as early indicators of the disease. On one hand, clinically significant manifestations such as camptocormia, Pisa syndrome, anterocollis, and hand dystonia can lead to postural alterations and deformities of the fingers as

Innovations, challenges, and gaps in the development of an effective vaccine against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a narrative review.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea, accounts for over 87 million new cases annually. It poses a serious threat to global health due to its high antimicrobial resistance. The development of an effective gonorrhea vaccine has been severely hampered by unique characteristics of this pathogen, particularly antigenic and phase variation of surface antigens. Additionally, the difficulty of eliciting effective mucosal immune responses and the inability of natural infection to produce long-lasting immunity further complicate vaccine development. In this review, the main obstacles
