Implicit and explicit memory in survivors of chronic interpersonal violence.

We investigated the relationship of implicit and explicit memory to a range of symptoms in a sample of 27 women with exposure to chronic interpersonal violence (IPV). Participants viewed the first 3 letters ("stems") of trauma-related, general threat, and neutral words; valenced words were matched with neutral words with the same stem. Free recall and a word-stem completion task were used to test explicit and implicit memory, respectively. Participants exhibited increased implicit memory for trauma-related words as compared with both general threat words and neutral "match" words. They also sh

Informative Disagreements: Associations Between Relationship Distress, Depression, and Discrepancy in Interpersonal Perception Within Couples.

This study evaluated the associations between relationship distress, depression symptoms, and discrepancy in interpersonal perception within couples. After completing a series of discussion tasks, couples (N = 88) rated their behavior using the circumplex-based Structural Analysis of Social Behavior Model (SASB; Benjamin, 1979, 1987, 2000). Overall, couple members were strikingly similar in their interpersonal perceptions, and tended to see themselves as friendly, reciprocal in their focus, and balanced between connection and separateness. As hypothesized, however, perceptual discrepancy was r

Therapeutic alliance in Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for bulimia nervosa: probably necessary but definitely insufficient.

The present paper assessed therapeutic alliance over the course of Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT-E) in a community-based sample of 112 patients with a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa (BN) or atypical BN. Temporal assessment of alliance was conducted at three time points (the start, middle and end of treatment) and the relationship between alliance and treatment retention and outcome was explored. Results indicated that the alliance between patient and therapist was strong at all stages of CBT-E, and even improved in the early stages of treatment when behaviour change was initiated (

Subjective experience of emotions and emotional empathy in paranoid schizophrenia.

Unlike the cognitive dimensions, alterations of the affective components of empathy in schizophrenia are less well understood. This study explored cognitive and affective dimensions of empathy in the context of the subjective experience of aspects of emotion processing, including emotion regulation, emotional contagion, and interpersonal distress, in individuals with schizophrenia and healthy controls. In addition, the predictive value of these parameters on psychosocial function was investigated. Fifty-five patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 55 healthy controls were investigated using t

Are atypical depression, borderline personality disorder and bipolar II disorder overlapping manifestations of a common cyclothymic diathesis?

The constructs of atypical depression, bipolar II disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD) overlap. We explored the relationships between these constructs and their temperamental underpinnings. We examined 107 consecutive patients who met DSM-IV criteria for major depressive episode with atypical features. Those who also met the DSM-IV criteria for BPD (BPD+), compared with those who did not (BPD-), had a significantly higher lifetime comorbidity for body dysmorphic disorder, bulimia nervosa, narcissistic, dependent and avoidant personality disorders, and cyclothymia. BPD+ also score

Battling on the Home Front: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Conflict Behavior Among Military Couples.

This study evaluated interpersonal behavior differences among male military service members with and without PTSD and their female partners. Couples (N = 64) completed a 17-minute videotaped conflict discussion, and their interaction behavior was coded using the circumplex-based Structural Analysis of Social Behavior model (SASB; Benjamin, 1979, 1987, 2000). Within couples, the behavior of partners was very similar. Compared to military couples without PTSD, couples with PTSD displayed more interpersonal hostility and control. Couples with PTSD also exhibited more sulking, blaming, and control

The popularity contest at work: who wins, why, and what do they receive?

In 2 studies, the authors investigated the popularity of employees at work. They tested a model that positioned personality in the form of core self-evaluations and situational position in the form of communication network centrality as antecedents of popularity and interpersonal citizenship and counterproductive work behaviors received from coworkers as outcomes of popularity. Data from 116 employees and 383 coworkers in Study 1 and 139 employees, their significant others, and 808 coworkers in Study 2 generally supported the model. Core self-evaluations and communication network centrality we

Nevra in a Greek village: idiom, metaphor, symptom, or disorder?

The folk model for nevra (nerves) in Methana, Greece, is discussed in terms of the contradiction between the ideal of solidarity, central to the local family ideology, and the reality of interpersonal conflict in daily life. Contradictions in values resulting from rapid socioeconomic change are also considered. Nevra, a broad, ambiguous, negotiated concept, expresses a wide range of symptoms and serves as a culturally condoned medium for expression of otherwise unacceptable emotions. The notion of nevra provides a metaphor for social disorder such as interpersonal conflict between close kinfol

Body Shame and Sexual Sensation Seeking Contribute to Associations Between Interpersonal Objectification Experiences and Sex-Linked Substance Use Among Women in College.

Objectification theory suggests that women who are treated as sexual objects may disengage from internal bodily experiences, increasing their risk for sexual dysfunction. Extending this framework, it is possible that when objectification dulls women's sexual sensation, they turn to substances they believe will heighten sexual sensation (i.e. sex-linked substance use; SLSU). The present study examined relationships between interpersonal sexual objectification and women's SLSU, with self-objectification, body shame, and sexual sensation seeking as potential mediators. Women (N = 573) recruited f

Time spent alone and loneliness in Mexican-origin youth: The role of social relationships and personality.

Loneliness is a pressing public health concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults. This preregistered study examined changes in time spent alone from 7th to 12th grade, as well as relationship and personality predictors of time spent alone in adolescence and loneliness in early adulthood, using data from a longitudinal study of 674 Mexican-origin youth in the United States, a rapidly growing yet understudied demographic. Time spent alone showed linear increases from 7th to 12th grade, with greater increases in time spent alone in high school for youth who spent a high proportion

Linking family and intimate partner relationships to chronic pain: An application of the biobehavioral family model.

INTRODUCTION: Research is needed to determine mechanisms of effect linking family relationships and chronic pain for adults. Guided by the Biobehavioral Family Model (BBFM), the present study examined indirect effects between a negative family emotional climate and chronic pain disease activity, as mediated by biobehavioral reactivity. METHOD: Data for this study are from the Midlife Development in the United States; specifically, a subsample of participants who reported experiencing chronic pain (n = 1,461, ages 32-84). Participants self-reported family strain, biobehavioral reactivity (i.e.

Influence of developmental social role transitions on young adult substance use.

Young adulthood (ages 18-25) is a developmental period characterized by numerous transitions in social roles. This period is also associated with increased risk of substance use and negative-consequences. Changes in developmental social role status can be related to changes in substance use. In this review, we discuss key developmental transitions and social roles associated with young adult substance use, including changes in educational status, employment, intimate partner relationships, friendships, and living status. We include important differences in substance use among groups defined by

Patterns of Gambling Activities and Gambling Problems Among Italian High School Students: Results from a Latent Class Analysis.

This study aims to provide an estimate of the prevalence of gambling among Italian adolescents and a description of their patterns of gambling activities (PGAs) using a latent class analysis on 13 different types of games. A nationwide sample of 10,959 Italian high school students was recruited in 2013. We assessed problem gambling using the South Oaks Gambling Screen: Revisited for Adolescent (SOGS-RA) scale. Approximately half (50.6%) of students reported gambling at least once in the previous year; 5.0% of them were problem gamblers and 9.1% were at-risk gamblers according to their SOGS-RA

The Productivity of Wh- Prompts in Child Forensic Interviews.

Child witnesses are often asked wh- prompts (what, how, why, who, when, where) in forensic interviews. However, little research has examined the ways in which children respond to different wh- prompts, and no previous research has investigated productivity differences among wh- prompts in investigative interviews. This study examined the use and productivity of wh- prompts in 95 transcripts of 4- to 13-year-olds alleging sexual abuse in child investigative interviews. What-how questions about actions elicited the most productive responses during both the rapport building and substantive phases

Early maturation as a risk factor for aggression and delinquency in adolescent girls: A review.

Early physical maturation has long been considered a risk factor for the development of delinquent girls. The basis of this relationship has not been fully explored or understood. This review summarises the current literature and research on early physical maturation in adolescent females and places it within a developmental perspective. The process of early physical maturation is also placed within a biopsychosocial model so that risk and protective factors arising from the biological, social, family, education and peer environments can be ascertained. A complex model of maturation and enviro

Women's substance use and experiences of intimate partner violence: a longitudinal investigation among a community sample.

Although cross-sectional studies reveal an association between women's substance use and experiencing physical violence from one's intimate partner, the temporal ordering of these variables is not clearly established. The current study involved longitudinal examination of the association of women's substance use with subsequent experiences of intimate partner violence as well as the association between women's experiences of intimate partner violence and their subsequent substance use. Women ages 18-30 who were in heterosexual relationships (n=724) were recruited through random digit dialing i
