The most common manifestation of Loxosceles spider envenoming is a dermonecrotic lesion at the bite site. Dermonecrotic toxins from Loxosceles gaucho venom were purified and characterized by mass spectrometry (capillary liquid chromatography followed by mass spectrometry detection). Two components were purified: a major one of 31,444 Da, called loxnecrogin A, and a minor one of 31,626 Da, called loxnecrogin B, being probably two isoforms of the toxin. We have identified and purified to homogeneity an enzyme from rat liver that catalyzes the oxidative catabolism of 5-formyltetrahydrofolate to p-aminobenzoylglutamate and a pterin derivative. Purification of the enzyme utilized six column matrices, including a pterin-6-carboxylic acid affinity column. Treatment of crude rat liver extracts with EDTA or heat decreased the specific activity of the enzyme by up to 85%. OBJECTIVE: Previous studies on the effects of umbilical cord occlusion (UCO) on the fetal brain have focused on short-term alterations, and in most cases have used only subjective techniques to evaluate brain injury. Our aim was to assess quantitatively the persistent consequences of UCO on the developing brain; we also examined the retina.

Besides the previously described LVP1, a second protein, LVP2, inducing a lipolytic response in adipose cells, was purified from scorpion Buthus occitanus tunetanus venom. It represented 2% of crude venom proteins, with pHi = 6 and molecular mass of 16889 Da. The reduction and the alkylation of LVP2 revealed an heterodimeric structure. Isolated alpha and beta chains of LVP2 have a molecular weight (MW) of 8822 Da and 8902, respectively. This protein was not toxic to mice and stimulated lipolysis on freshly dissociated rat adipocytes in a dose-dependent manner with EC50 = 2 +/- 0.75 microg/ml.
