BACKGROUND: Beginning August 2017, we conducted a prospective case-control investigation in Monterrey, Mexico to assess the association between Zika virus (ZIKV) and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).
METHODS: For each of 50 GBS case-patients, we enrolled 2-3 afebrile controls (141 controls in total) matched by sex, age group, and presentation to same hospital within 7 days.
RESULTS: PCR results for ZIKV in blood and/or urine were available on all subjects; serum ZIKV IgM antibody for 52% of case-patients and 80% of controls. Subjects were asked about antecedent illness in the two months prior t

Antibody titer, lymphocyte stimulation and leukocyte migration inhibition with chlamydial antigens were determined repeatedly over many months on human subjects. The volunteers were retrospectively placed into four groups on the basis of clinical, laboratory and epidemiologic criteria. Group A consisted of persons with proven or probable chlamydial infection, including an illness confirmed by chlamydial isolation or seroconversion, or a clinically compatible illness with positive serologic results. Group B were sexual partners or close contacts of group A individuals. Group C were laboratory w

BACKGROUND: The incidence of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in Israel is 0.7%. Only 10-15% are symptomatic. Valganciclovir has been shown to improve hearing and neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates with symptomatic congenital CMV infection. Targeted examination of infants who fail routine neonatal hearing screening or have clinical or laboratory findings suggestive of symptomatic congenital CMV infection may be a cost-effective approach.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the possibility of targeted examination for the detection of newborns with symptomatic congenital CMV infection.

INTRODUCTION: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) remain global health challenges. Health workers (HWs), particularly laboratory HWs who handle infectious samples, face increased occupational risks of infection. Laboratory HWs are essential for disease diagnosis and monitoring, yet their health is endangered by workplace exposures to HIV and TB, potentially leading to workforce depletion and compromised healthcare delivery. Despite existing guidelines and policies for access and implementation of effective occupational health services (OHS), including hazard identification

The importance of intrauterine viral infections in newborns pathology remain incompletely understood, as there is the problem of early verification of the etiologic pathogen. The aim of the study was to develop diagnostic criteria for intrauterine viral infections by introducing rapid diagnostic methods, the study of perinatal factors, medical history, clinical course and laboratory data. Clinical and laboratory examination 834 mothers and their newborn patients with suspected intrauterine infection. We observed 224 children with verified intrauterine viral infection. Studied the history of pe

The epidemiology of ocular chlamydial infection in a trachoma-hyperendemic area of Tanzania was investigated. Specimens for chlamydial isolation cultures and direct fluorescent antibody cytology were collected from 1085 children aged 1-7 years. Other data included examinations for signs of clinical trachoma and the collection of household data on risk factors. A total of 33% of children had a positive laboratory test for Chlamydia species. The most important factors for predicting chlamydial infection were the presence of a sibling with laboratory evidence of infection, increased number of fli

BACKGROUND: Seizures can be part of the clinical presentation of central nervous system (CNS) infections. We describe patients suspected of a neurological infection who present with a seizure and study diagnostic accuracy of clinical and laboratory features predictive of CNS infection in this population.
METHODS: We analyzed all consecutive patients presenting with a seizure from two prospective Dutch cohort studies, in which patients were included who underwent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination because of the suspicion of a CNS infection.
RESULTS: Of 900 episodes of suspected CNS infect

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dengue and Leptospirosis were often discussed separately with rash being more common in dengue and jaundice in leptospirosis. But with increasing reports of co-infection, the situation has become worse. The main objective of this study was to look for the presence of both Dengue and Leptospira IgM antibodies in serum samples of patients, presenting with acute febrile illness. Medical records of the co-infected patients were examined to analyse the clinical features and laboratory findings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum samples of patients presenting with acute febril

Background and objective Influenza-associated myositis is an uncommon but increasingly recognized complication of pediatric influenza infection. Although influenza B has traditionally been associated with benign acute childhood myositis (BACM), data comparing the clinical characteristics of influenza A and influenza B in children with influenza-associated myositis remain limited, particularly in the Middle East. Hence, this study aimed to compare the clinical presentation, laboratory findings, outcomes, and prevalence of myositis-related manifestations among children with influenza A and influ

We evaluated 16 children at high risk for AIDS because of mothers infected with HIV. Two children were persistently seropositive and had laboratory and clinical evidence of HIV infection but had no detectable infectious HIV in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Seven children, all of whom had clinical and laboratory evidence of HIV infection, were seropositive and virus culture-positive. One child who died at 10 months of age of candida septicemia was HIV antibody-negative but HIV was grown from cultures of his PBMC. Six children had no serologic or virologic evidence of HIV infe

Antimicrobial susceptibility data on Escherichia coli F4, Pasteurella multocida, and Streptococcus suis isolates from Ontario swine (January 1998 to October 2010) were acquired from a comprehensive diagnostic veterinary laboratory in Ontario, Canada. In relation to the possible development of a surveillance system for antimicrobial resistance, data were assessed for ease of management, completeness, consistency, and applicability for temporal and spatial statistical analyses. Limited farm location data precluded spatial analyses and missing demographic data limited their use as predictors with

The authors tested under laboratory conditions the susceptibility of five species of small laboratory animals (guinea pigs, rats, syrian and chinese hamsters and mice) to legionella infection after intraperitoneal inoculation with 10(8) cells of nine strains of legionellae of the Legionella pneumophila species. The suitability of the animal model was evaluated on the basis of clinical manifestations of the infection, pathological macroscopic changes and detection of legionellae from animal organs on CYE (Charcoal-Yeast Extract) media. The results of the analysis of experimental animal infectio

Although classic viral exanthems of childhood are well described, they are rarely differentiated in adults. Laboratory techniques for viral identification have advanced without substantial literature to suggest how a dermatologist ought to conduct a cost-effective and diagnostic viral panel. Certain clinical features such as petechiae, vesicles, and dusky macular or morbilliform exanthems point strongly toward a viral exanthem. Differentiation of drug and viral causes of morbilliform eruptions has proven difficult. It is possible that with further diagnostic refinement that unnecessary and fru

UNLABELLED: Different patterns of disease expression have been found in pediatric HIV1 infection. The precise timing of vertical transmission of HIV1 cannot be pinpointed. Some studies suggests that a substantial proportion of infants are infected during gestation are likely to have more extensive infection and thus more accelerated disease that infants who become infected during labor or delivery.
PATIENTS: We examined the clinical manifestations and laboratory findings in seven newborns with HIV1 infection.
RESULTS: In all patients, have been bound clinical or laboratory features at birth.

We report a case of a 64-year-old veterinarian working in a state camel veterinary laboratory who was diagnosed with and treated for acute brucellosis with complicating epididymo-orchitis. Genomic tandem repeat analysis (MLVA-16) revealed identical Brucella strains in patient cultures and from different dromedary milk samples positive for Brucella melitensis, thereby confirming the diagnosis of a laboratory acquired infection. The case illustrates the high (airborne) infectivity of brucellosis in laboratory settings and the need to implement vigorous bio-safety measures in veterinary laborator

Sickle cell disease (SCD), a genetic hemoglobin disorder, is a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Tanzania, due to its association with high morbidity and mortality from infections. The disease is the leading cause of complications, emphasizing the urgent need for effective preventive strategies and diagnostic protocols. We evaluated the implementation and effectiveness of infection prevention measures and laboratory diagnostic compliance at Nyamagana District Hospital, emphasizing their effects on patient outcomes and survival rates. This retrospective observ

BACKGROUND: Dengue is the most common arboviral disease in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Like other regions, dengue-endemic areas have faced the additional public health and socio-economic impact of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. COVID-19 and dengue co-infections have been reported, with complicated patient management and care requirements. This review aimed to collate and synthesise current knowledge on the clinical features and outcomes of COVID-19 and dengue virus co-infection, a potentially important new dimension to be considered in public

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a tier 1 select agent that is associated with laboratory-acquired melioidosis, with international guidelines recommending isolate handling within a class II biosafety cabinet (BSC) in a biosafety level 3 (BSL3) facility. In low-resource settings, this may not be practical; therefore, we aimed to assess the risk of laboratory-acquired melioidosis during routine work. Prior exposure to the organism was determined with a questionnaire and concomitant serology. Of 30 laboratory scientists handling B. pseudomallei on 1,267 occasions outside a biosafety cabinet, no infec

BACKGROUND: Recommended testing for both infants with Zika-associated birth defects (i.e., microcephaly and selected brain or eye anomalies) and infants without birth defects whose mothers had laboratory evidence of possible Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy includes nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) testing within days after birth. Brain and eye defects highly specific for congenital ZIKV infection have been described; sporadic reports have documented negative ZIKV testing in such infants.
METHODS: Infants from the U.S. Zika Pregnancy and Infant

Melioidosis, a potentially fatal tropical infection, is said to be underdiagnosed in low-income countries. An increase in melioidosis cases in Sri Lanka allowed us to analyze the relationship among clinical outcome, bacteriology, epidemiology, and geography in the first 108 laboratory-confirmed cases of melioidosis from a nationwide surveillance program. The additional 76 cases of laboratory-confirmed melioidosis confirmed further associations between Burkholderia pseudomallei multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and infection phenotype; ST1137/unifocal bacteremic infection (χ2 = 3.86, P < 0.05),
