Developmental Language Disorder and Uninhibited Primitive Reflexes in Young Children.

Purpose Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a developmental disorder where children fail to acquire language in the absence of a clear cause. Many studies have reported general motor deficits in children with DLD, but no studies have uncovered a cure. The purpose of our study is to better understand the underlying motor deficits in DLD, starting from uninhibited primary reflexes-which are the most basic stage of motor development. Knowledge of this motor-language relationship should lead to earlier and more targeted interventions in young children with DLD. Method Children with DLD (n = 7…

Prosodic skills of Spanish-speaking children with developmental language disorder.

BACKGROUND: Phonological difficulties in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) are well documented. However, abilities regarding prosody, the rhythmic and melodic characteristics of language, have been less widely studied, particularly in Spanish. Moreover, the scant research findings that have been reported are contradictory. These considerations justify our new research into the question, focusing on Spanish-speaking children with DLD. AIMS: To examine a wide range of prosodic skills among Spanish-speaking children with DLD. To analyse the relationships between prosody and oth…

Learning a Second Language in Adulthood Changes Subcortical Neural Encoding.

Second language learning has been shown to impact and reshape the central nervous system, anatomically and functionally. Most of the studies on second language learning and neuroplasticity have been focused on cortical areas, whereas the subcortical neural encoding mechanism and its relationship with L2 learning have not been examined extensively. The purpose of this study was to utilize frequency-following response (FFR) to examine if and how learning a tonal language in adulthood changes the subcortical neural encoding in hearing adults. Three groups of subjects were recruited: native speake…

Development of the Hong Kong Sign Language Sentence Repetition Test.

This paper presents the design and development of the Hong Kong Sign Language-Sentence Repetition Test (HKSL-SRT). It will be argued that the test offers evidence of discriminability, reliability, as well as practicality and can serve as an effective global measurement of individuals' proficiency in HKSL. The full version of the test consists of 40 signed sentences of increasing length and complexity. Specifically, we will evaluate the manual and non-manual components of these sentences to find out whether and to what extent they can differentiate three groups of deaf signers, namely, native s…

Inter-participant consistency of language-processing networks during abstract thoughts.

Human brain imaging typically employs structured and controlled tasks to avoid variable and inconsistent activation patterns. Here we expand … strictly avoided visual and motor networks. On the other hand, it overlapped with left lateralized language networks. Activation of the default mode network (DMN) during abstract thought was similar to DMN activation during rest. These observations were supported by a quantitative neuronal distance metric analysis. Our results reveal that despite its high …

Number processing skill trajectories in children with specific language impairment.

BACKGROUND: A number of contrasting hypotheses have been put forward concerning mathematical performance deficits in children with specific language impairment (SLI). However, debate as to the nature of this deficit continues. The present study analyzed whether the trajectories of SLI-children may be attributed to the use of symbolic vs. linguistic assessment tasks, or to a deficit in the magnitude system. METHOD: SLI-children (N=20) and typically achieving children (N=20) were monitored between kindergarten and first grade. Four tasks were designed, each with varying demands on language, sym…

Developmental language disorders and risk of recidivism among young offenders.

BACKGROUND: Although factors such as adverse family background have been widely examined, little is known about the prevalence or potential impact of developmental language disorder (DLD) on risk of recidivism in young people with history of criminal justice system contact. METHODS: A total of 145 young offenders participated. An adversity score was constructed based on information found in youth justice service records. Data collected included standardised measures of expressive and receptive language, nonverbal IQ and the inventory of callous-unemotional traits. Survival analysis was perfor…

Effects of Practice Variability on Second-Language Speech Production Training.

BACKGROUND: Mastering the phonetics of a second language (L2) involves a component of speech-motor skill, and it has been suggested that L2 learners aiming to achieve a more native-like pronunciation could benefit from practice structured in accordance with the principles of motor learning. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This study investigated the influence one such principle, high versus low variability in practice, has on speech-motor learning for Korean adults seeking to acquire native-like production of English rhotics. Practice incorporated a commercially available intraoral placement device…

Second-language learning difficulties in Italian children with reading difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Children with dyslexia often show second-language reading and writing difficulties, but the cognitive mechanisms connected to this impairment need to be clarified. AIMS: The present study examined the neuropsychological mechanisms underlying learning English as a foreign language in 4th- to the 8th-grade Italian students showing reading difficulties (RD) or typical development (TD). For this purpose, screening involving 901 students was carried out to select children with RD. SAMPLE: Ninety students with RD were compared with 90 typically developing (TD) children matched for non-…

Statistical Learning and Language Impairments: Toward More Precise Theoretical Accounts.

Statistical-learning (SL) theory offers an experience-based account of typical and atypical spoken and written language acquisition. Recent work has provided initial support for this view, tying individual differences in SL abilities to linguistic skills, including language impairments. In the current article, we provide a critical review of studies testing SL abilities in participants with and without developmental dyslexia and specific language impairment and discuss the directions that this field of research has taken so far. We identify substantial vagueness in the demarcation lines betwee…

Speech and Language Presentations of FTLD-TDP Type B Neuropathology.

Four right-handed patients who presented with an isolated impairment of speech or language had transactive response DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) type B pathology. Comportment and pyramidal motor function were preserved at presentation. Three of the cases developed axial rigidity and oculomotor findings late in their course with no additional pyramidal or lower motor neuron impairments. However, in all 4 cases, postmortem examination disclosed some degree of upper and lower motor neuron disease (MND) pathology in motor cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord. Although TDP-43 type B patholo…

Natural language processing to identify ureteric stones in radiology reports.

INTRODUCTION: Natural language processing (NLP) is an emerging tool which has the ability to automate data extraction from large volumes of unstructured text. One of the main described uses of NLP in radiology is cohort building for epidemiological studies. This study aims to assess the accuracy of NLP in identifying a group of patients positive for ureteric stones on Computed Tomography - Kidneys, Ureter, Bladder (CT KUB) reports. METHODS: Retrospective review of all CT KUB reports in a single calendar year. A locally available NLP tool was used to automatically classify the reports based on…

A Cross-cultural Mixed Methods Investigation of Language Socialization Practices.

This embedded mixed methods study explores how cultural differences in language socialization practices influence parent-child verbal interactions. The Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) System audio recorded families of children who are and are not deaf and hard of hearing in Canada and Vietnam. Software automatically calculated an average conversational turn count. Canadian families participated in more turns than Vietnamese families regardless of hearing status. Interviews with the children's caregivers provided context for these results. Within Vietnamese families, the language socializa…

Construction of lumped-parameter cardiovascular models using the CellML language.

Lumped-parameter models are widely used by cardiovascular researchers in the analysis of the circulatory dynamics. However, portability and model exchange have always been a problem, with different researchers implement the model differently. To improve the situation, in this study, a group of lumped-parameter cardiovascular system models with different levels of complexity have been implemented using the CellML mark-up language. The models have been curated and made publicly available in the CellML model repository, and the purpose of this paper is to provide further technical details to supp…

Women's response to state-mandated language in dense breast notification.

Many states require radiologists to notify women of dense breast status. Our aim was to elicit women's response to state-mandated dense breast notification language. Of respondents, 82% report that current notification does not inform them of additional screening studies available, and 41% report notification does not inform them of next steps. Open-ended responses indicate three main areas of patient concern: Decisional Needs, Decision Quality, and Decision Support. We modified an existing Decision Support framework to capture additional themes specific to dense breast decisions. The develope…

Left temporal lobe language network connectivity in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Impairment of naming function is a critical problem for temporal lobe epilepsy patients, yet the neural correlates of the disruption of temporal lobe language networks are poorly understood. Using functional MRI, we investigated the activation and task-related functional connectivity of left temporal lobe language networks and their relation to clinical naming performance and disease characteristics. We studied 59 adult patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (35 left temporal lobe epilepsy) and 32 healthy controls with auditory and visual naming functional MRI tasks. Time series of activation ma…

Narrative Language Sampling in Typical Development: Implications for Clinical Trials.

PURPOSE: This study examined cross-sectional age-related trajectories of expressive language variables (syntactic complexity, lexical diversity, unintelligibility, dysfluency, and talkativeness) derived from a narrative language sampling procedure. METHOD: Narrative samples were analyzed from 103 typically developing individuals, ages 4-21 years. RESULTS: Results showed that this procedure was effective for the entire age range, with participants producing an utterance on virtually every page of the wordless picture books used to prompt the narrative. Importantly, the cross-sectional traject…

Scientific language trends among Swedish urologists and surgeons 1900-1955.

PURPOSE: Before English took the lead as the prime scientific language among northern European urologists and surgeons, German was widely regarded as the "lingua franca". This shift has to date not been systematically reconstructed. This article provides insights into the question how political and social factors influence how physicians communicate with each other, what they read, and how the constellations of international scientific communities in medicine change over time. METHODS: Through a language analysis of more than 2000 articles, including their references, in major Swedish medical…
