Prospective evaluation of intraocular lens calculation after myopic refractive surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate outcome after refractive surgery in cataract patients for whom intraocular lens (IOL) selection was based on the use of a myopic regression formula. METHODS: This prospective case series included 20 eyes of 14 patients who had previous uncomplicated myopic refractive surgery, followed by uncomplicated cataract extraction with IOL implantation. Calculation of IOL was based on flattest keratometry readings, spherical equivalent refraction before refractive surgery, and an adjustment factor derived from the regression formula: -(0.47x + 0.85). Following cataract extraction,

Difficult lens power calculations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although cataract extraction seems to be feasible without major technical obstacles, the surgical technique has changed completely, and patients are no longer satisfied with good spectacle-corrected vision but anticipate complete visual rehabilitation after cataract surgery, without correction. To fulfill this desire, toric or accommodative intraocular lenses are of increasing popularity, and the intraocular lens power calculation after keratorefractive surgery has been improved. RECENT FINDINGS: In this review article, we provide an overview of different mathematical strat

Growth factors in corneal wound healing following refractive surgery: A review.

The first part of this review article aims to provide important basic definitions of growth factor terminology, and to put forward a model for understanding the role of growth factors in a wound healing context. In the second part of the paper, we review the literature on growth factors in the cornea, including that on changes associated with wound healing following refractive surgery in the epithelial, stromal, and endothelial layers. The role of growth factors in stromal removal, corneal neovascularization, corneal innervation and wound healing is considered. The importance of the epithelial

[Refractive surgery: most commonly used techniques, results and complications].

Refractive surgery is gaining enormous popularity. It is estimated that in 2001, refractive surgery was performed on 1 in 8000 persons in the Netherlands. Photorefractive keratectomy and laser in-situ keratomileusis are effective and predictable for the correction of myopia up to 10.0 D and hypermetropia up to +4.5 D. There is rarely any significant loss of best-corrected visual acuity postoperatively. For the correction of higher levels of myopia and hypermetropia, phakic intraocular lenses can be implanted in the anterior or posterior eye chamber, in other words in front of the natural lens.

A Retrospective Study to Compare the Efficacy of 308-nm Light-Emitting Diode and 308-nm Monochromatic Excimer Lamp in the Treatment of Pediatric Vitiligo.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo, a common depigmentation disorder, is often treated with phototherapy. 308-nm monochromatic excimer lamp/laser (308-nm MEL) is typically administered in hospitals, whereas 308-nm light-emitting diodes (308-nm LED) offer a home-based alternative. This study compared the efficacy and safety of home-based 308-nm LED with hospital-based 308-nm MEL in pediatric vitiligo. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 75 pediatric vitiligo patients treated with home-based 308-nm LED or hospital-based 308-nm MEL was conducted. Efficacy (repigmentation > 50%) and adverse events were eval
