Effects of unstable load and unstable surface ontrunk muscles activation and postural control in healthy subjects.

Exercise with an unstable load is considered a new training method to activate the core muscles. Research has shown consistency regarding an unstable surface but has not provided comprehensive findings about the effect of an unstable load. The study aimed to examine the impact of an unstable load and unstable surfaces on core muscle activation and postural control during lifting. Thirty-eight participants lifted a load equivalent to 10 % of their body weight under three conditions: a stable load on an unstable surface, a stable load on a stable surface, and an unstable load on a stable surface…

Effects of different manipulations of acupuncture on electrical activity of stomach in humans.

The author observed effects of 4 different acupuncture manipulations (lifting-thrusting, twisting-twirling, uniform reinforcing-reducing, and needling with sensation propagating along channels) on electrical activity of the stomach, using amplitude and frequency of human electrogastrogram (EGG) as the indexes. The experiment proved that both the twisting-twirling and the uniform reinforcing-reducing methods inhibited electrical activity of the stomach to reduce the frequency of EGG (P < 0.05), and at the same time the uniform reinforcing-reducing method decreased the amplitude (P < 0.001); whi…

Gender differences in psychophysically determined maximum acceptable weights and forces for industrial workers observed after twenty years.

PURPOSE: In the year 1991, manual materials handling guidelines were published by Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety. In these guidelines, maximum acceptable weights (MAWs) and forces (MAFs) for lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying were derived from studies conducted in a 20 year span before the above publication date. The question is whether the present generation of workers has retained the same gender differences and absolute values in psychophysically determined MAWs and MAFs as those reflected in the guideline. METHODS: Twenty-four female industrial workers perform…

Repositioning a slumped person in a wheelchair. A biomechanical analysis of three transfer techniques.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of three lifting techniques (unassisted lift, vertically assisted lift, and horizontally assisted lift) and two patient masses (65 kg and 75 kg) on loads acting on the lifter's spine when repositioning a wheelchair bound patient to a more upright sitting position. A static biomechanical model was used in conjunction with ground reaction force and videographic data to estimate compression and shear forces at the lumbosacral (L5/S1) joint. Results indicated that: L5/S1 compression forces associated with both unassisted and assisted transfers …

Bilateral Back Extensor Exosuit for multidimensional assistance and prevention of spinal injuries.

Lumbar spine injuries resulting from heavy or repetitive lifting remain a prevalent concern in workplaces. Back-support devices have been developed to mitigate these injuries by aiding workers during lifting tasks. However, existing devices often fall short in providing multidimensional force assistance for asymmetric lifting, an essential feature for practical workplace use. In addition, validation of device safety across the entire human spine has been lacking. This paper introduces the Bilateral Back Extensor Exosuit (BBEX), a robotic back-support device designed to address both functionali…

Finite element investigation of the intrinsic stiffness contribution of intra-abdominal pressure in a transient spine and trunk model.

Lifting velocity is a high-risk factor for low back pain in occupational settings and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is known to fluctuate transiently during lifting. The contribution of IAP toward spinal stability at different loading rates remains largely unaddressed in biomechanical models. This could provide insight into how lifting velocity can affect low back injury mechanics. A nonlinear, transient finite element model of the lumbar spine and surrounding anatomy was developed, including an anatomically accurate abdominal compartment. In combined loading, the spine was flexed to target i…

Novel Clinical Anatomical Consideration of the Superficial and Deep Layers of the Deep Temporal Fascia.

BACKGROUND: The deep temporal fascia provides anchoring during thread lifting, which is a minimally invasive face-lifting procedure. However, anatomical studies involving the deep temporal fascia in addition to effective and safe thread-lifting procedures are scarce. The authors clarified the anatomy of the superficial layer of the deep temporal fascia and its surrounding structure using ultrasonography, histologic sections, and cadaveric dissection to propose an effective thread-lifting procedure guideline. METHODS: The authors included 20 healthy young participants from the Republic of Kore…
