Epidermoid implantation cyst of the lower lip: report of case.

Epidermoid implantation cysts are relatively rare lesions of the oral region. A lesion occurring in the lower lip of a 21-year-old man is reported. In the pathogenesis of these lesions, trauma is usually the precipitating factor. Treatment is surgical and histopathologic examination will give the final diagnosis.

A case of syndactyly in the white-lipped tamarin Saguinus nigricollis.

A case of syndactyly in a captive bred white-lipped tamarin (Saguinus nigricollis) is reported which involved the fusion of metacarpals 3 and 4 of both hands. Variations in the vertebral formula among the parents and offspring were also found.

The Vermilion Myomucosal Advancement Flap for Reconstructing Superficial Lip Defects.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of vermilion defects is challenging, requiring restoration of aesthetics, function, and sensation. The vermilion myomucosal advancement flap, which uses adjacent native tissue, is an ideal technique for this purpose. This study evaluates the outcomes of this flap for reconstructing full-thickness vermilion defects. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 17 patients who underwent vermilion reconstruction with myomucosal advancement flaps for defects involving <50% of the lip width. Outcomes were assessed at 12 months postoperatively. Aesthetic satisfaction and…

Digital Workflow for Customized Nasal Conformers in Cleft Lip Repair.

This report presents a digital workflow for fabricating a unilateral customized nasal conformer to achieve nasal symmetry, reduce relapse, and maintain airway patency following unilateral cleft lip repair. A silicone impression of the infant's nose and lip was obtained and scanned to produce an standard tessellation language (STL) file, which was processed in 3-Matics software. The conformer was designed by mirroring the normal nostril and applying a 1-mm offset, with incorporated suture holes for intraoperative fixation, and then 3D printed in polymethylmethacrylate. Following Fisher unilater…

Upper Lip Frenulum Findings and Breastfeeding Problems in Healthy Newborns.

IMPORTANCE: Breastfeeding improves health outcomes in neonates. However, infants' oral anatomy may alter latch and sucking mechanics, hampering breastfeeding. The role of maxillary frenulum (upper lip-tie) has remained controversial. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between upper lip-tie clinical findings, such as thickness, attachment, and upper lip mobility, and early breastfeeding problems. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this prospective cohort study (Lingual Frenulum in Newborn Infants substudy), consecutive mother-infant dyads were studied from August 2, 2023, to January…

The adult cleft lip and palate patient: beyond primary repair.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cleft lip and palate (CL/P) is the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly worldwide. While surgical techniques and multidisciplinary cleft care have advanced substantially, much of the literature focuses on pediatric outcomes. The long-term experiences of adults living with CL/P remain comparatively underexplored. This article aims to review the functional, psychological, and social experiences of adults with CL/P and consider how these factors influence long-term care. RECENT FINDINGS: Adults with CL/P face persistent functional challenges including speech difficultie…

Miescher's Granulomatous Cheilitis: A Rare Cause of Recurrent Lip Inflammation.

Miescher's granulomatous cheilitis (GC) is a rare, noninfectious, chronic, idiopathic granulomatous disorder characterized by recurrent swelling of the lips. It is considered part of the triad of Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, a neurological and cutaneous disorder characterized by orofacial edema, peripheral facial nerve palsy, and a fissured tongue. However, the complete triad is uncommon, and Miescher's GC may present as a monosymptomatic form. Due to its rarity, the condition has a broad differential diagnosis and poses a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 33-year-old woman with …

First Comprehensive Characterization of Lip Lymphoma: A Population-Based Study.

INTRODUCTION: Lip lymphoma is an exceptionally rare extranodal lymphoma with limited data to guide clinical management. We conducted the first large-scale population-based analysis to characterize its epidemiology, treatment patterns, and outcomes. METHODS: We identified all lip lymphoma cases (2000-2022) from the SEER database (17 registries). Patients were categorized as localized primary lip lymphoma (stage I) or lymphoma involving the lip area (stages II-IV). RESULTS: Among 82 patients (median age 62 years, 54.9% female), age-adjusted incidence was 0.0459 per million per year. MALT lymph…

Tackling Event-Based Lip-Reading by Exploring Multigrained Spatiotemporal Clues.

Automatic lip-reading (ALR) is the task of recognizing words based on visual information obtained from the speaker's lip movements. In this study, we introduce event cameras, a novel type of sensing device, for ALR. Event cameras offer both technical and application advantages over conventional cameras for ALR due to their higher temporal resolution, less redundant visual information, and lower power consumption. To recognize words from the event data, we propose a novel multigrained spatiotemporal features learning framework, which is capable of perceiving fine-grained spatiotemporal features…

Galectin-10 Characterization in Cleft Lip Palate - Affected Palatal Tissue.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip palate is one of the most common craniofacial birth defects in humans. Multiple defense factors have been described to have possible involvement in the failure in palatal shelve elevation, migration and fusion, most importantly, the role of chronic inflammation. A widespread presence of Gal-10 in different local inflammatory processes has been discussed before, however, knowledge of its involvement in local tissue inflammation in the postnatal cleft palate and tissue regeneration is scant. This study focuses on the detection of appearance and a possible role of Gal-10 in …
