BACKGROUND: Intestinal arteriovenous malformation is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins that bypasses the capillary system and may be a cause of significant lower gastrointestinal bleeding. On endoscopy, arteriovenous malformations are usually flat or elevated, bright red lesions. Overall, rectal localization of arteriovenous malformations is rare. The same may be said about polypoid shape arteriovenous malformations. Herein, we present a case of a large rectal polypoid arteriovenous malformations.
METHODS: Clinical, diagnostic, and treatment modalities of the patient were revi

INTRODUCTION: Lipedema is a chronic feminine disease that causes abnormal fat deposition in lower limbs and occasionally upper limbs. Easy bruising and pain are common. Lipedema patients suffer from both physical and psychological disability. Despite the relatively high prevalence and the impact on the quality of life, little is known about the disease. Most patients are misdiagnosed as lymphedema or obesity. The aim was to perform a non-systematic review on lipedema literature, related to diagnosis and therapy.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A literature search was performed by three researchers, to

INTRODUCTION: Varicocele is among the most frequently encountered, surgically correctable causes of male infertility. Since varicocele is a primary abnormality of testicular vessels, a thorough understanding of haemodynamic changes in the microcirculation of varicocele testis is needed.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate changes in the microcirculation of varicocele testis and correlate them with symptomatic and semen parameters changes before and after varicocelectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective, observational study includes 47 patients of age group 18-40 years who underwent microsurgical

INTRODUCTION: Secondary lymphedema is the abnormal collection of lymphatic fluid within subcutaneous structures. Patients with lymphedema suffer a low quality of life. In our study, we aim to provide a systematic review of the current data on patient outcomes regarding breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), and the most prevalent reconstructive techniques.
METHODS: A PubMed (MEDLINE) and Scopus literature search was performed in September 2020. Studies were screened based on inclusion/exclusion criteria. The protocol was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Rev

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are malignant neoplasms of the lymphatic system, typically occurring in the fifth through seventh decades of life. Tumors develop from abnormal lymphocyte proliferation and accumulation. Although a majority of NHLs occur in nodal regions, 40% of cases appear in extranodal sites involving the stomach, spleen, Waldeyer's ring, central nervous system, lung, skin, and bone. Extranodal NHL presents a diagnostic challenge because it may mimic endodontic disease when occurring in intraosseous and soft tissue sites. This case report presents misdiagnosis of a diffuse large

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare systemic disease that occurs sporadically (S/LAM) or as part of tuberous sclerosis (TS/LAM). LAM is characterized by proliferation of abnormal smooth muscle cells. This disease clinically manifests as dyspnea on exertion and pneumothorax. Lymphadenopathy in the abdominal and pelvic region leading to lymphatic obstruction can also occur. LAM is associated with kidney angiomyolipoma and meningioma. The disease is diagnosed histologically and/or using typical high-resolution computed tomography findings and anamnestic information. In histopatho

UNLABELLED: Cancer treatments with axillary or pelvic lymph nodes dissection and radiation place patients at lifelong risk for the development of secondary lymphedema. Our aim was to evaluate the role of stress lymphoscintigraphy for early detection and management of secondary lymphedema.
METHODS: Stress lymphoscintigraphy was performed within 1 year after surgery and the completion of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. All patients were classified by the International Society of Lymphology clinical stages from 0 to 3. A dose of 50 MBq of 99mTc-HSA-nanocolloidal in 0.4mL was injected intr

Introduction: Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of interstitial fluid, due to inefficient uptake and reduced flow, leading to swelling and disability, mostly in the extremities. Hereditary lymphedema usually occurs as an autosomal dominant trait with allelic heterogeneity. Methods: We identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the FOXC2 gene using dbSNP, analyzed their effect on the resulting protein using VEP and Biomart, modelled the resulting protein using Project HOPE, identified gene - gene interactions using GeneMANIA and predicted miRNAs affected and the resulting effects

The peritoneum consists of a layer of mesothelial cells on a connective tissue base which is perfused with circulatory and lymphatic vessels. Total effective blood flow to the human peritoneum is estimated between 60 and 100 mL/min, representing 1-2 % of the cardiac outflow. The parietal peritoneum accounts for about 30 % of the peritoneal surface (anterior abdominal wall 4 %) and is vascularized from the circumflex, iliac, lumbar, intercostal, and epigastric arteries, giving rise to a quadrangular network of large, parallel blood vessels and their perpendicular offshoots. Parietal vessels dra

Lymphangiomas are malformations of the lymphatic system, which is a common disease in children, usually superficial in body, but seldom seen in visceral organs. We present the case of a child with lymphangioma of the gallbladder. Also we reviewed the literatures. A 2-year-6-month-old boy complained of progressing difficulty in walking for 6 months. Cerebral MRI showed abnormal signals in the white matter suggesting leukodystrophy. Ultrasound of abdomen showed a mixed-echoic mass in the site of gallbladder. CT scan showed an enlarged gallbladder with increased density. Bloodcounting, liver func

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a systemic disorder affecting almost exclusively young women, is characterized by the abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle-like cells (LAM cells). LAM can occur either in association with the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) (TSC-LAM) or without TSC (sporadic LAM). Recent studies have demonstrated that LAM is a neoplasm arising from constitutive activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway dysregulated by a functional loss of TSC genes, but the primary organ of origin remains unclear. Therefore, we performed histologic and immunohistologi

Mesenteric cysts are rare. In this paper we present a case of a mesenteric cyst in the sigmoid colon of a 3-year-old girl. On the first visit to our department, a smooth-surfaced soft mass approximately 15 cm in diameter was noticed in the right lower abdomen. Although the patient complained of lower abdominal pain, there was no tenderness or guarding. Laboratory tests indicated no abnormality except a slightly increased level of C-reactive protein (2.3 mg/dL). A plain abdominal X-ray film revealed displacement of colonic gas from the right lower abdomen, and abdominal ultrasonography and comp

Proliferation, migration, and differentiation of smooth muscle (SM)-like lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) cells in the lungs are pathologic manifestations of pulmonary LAM, a rare lung disease predominantly afflicting women and exacerbated by pregnancy. LAM cells form nodules throughout the lung without any predominant localization, but can also form small cell clusters dispersed within lung parenchyma. LAM cells have the appearance of "immature" SM-like cells, irregularly distributed within the nodule in contrast to organized SM cell layers in airways and vasculature. Progressive growth of LAM

The interstitial tissue of the testes from healthy boars, and unilateral and bilateral abdominal cryptorchid boars was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. The left and right testes of healthy boars, and the left (scrotal) testis of unilateral cryptorchid boars had abundant mature Leydig cells, few fibroblasts and mast cells, scarce and small blood vessels, and little lymphatic areas. The right (abdominal) testis of unilateral cryptorchid boars contained abundant Leydig cells, fibroblasts and erythrocytes, scarce mast cells, and frequent blood vessels; Leydig cells exhibited

Immunodysregulation appears to play a prominent role in the evolution of some lymphomas, as evidenced by the strong associations between congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies and lymphoid neoplasia, and abnormal ratios of helper T cells in lymphoid proliferations. Lympho-proliferative diseases of the ocular adnexa encompass a spectrum of lesions that may present with similar clinical and radiological features. Most primary lymphoid proliferations of the ocular adnexa consist of small lymphocytes of B-cell origin. Employing morphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic criteria

Respiratory infections are common after solid organ transplantation, but the significance of community respiratory viral infections in this patient population has not been determined. Review of the literature indicates that infection of organ transplant recipients by community respiratory viruses can result in significant morbidity with some associated mortality. These viruses include respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus (PIV), influenza virus, and adenovirus. As in normal hosts, infection of organ transplant recipients by these viruses can result in limited upper respiratory
