Muscle pain has been associated with magnesium (Mg) and selenium (Se) deficiency: magnesium and selenium status were investigated in fibromyalgia (FM). Erythrocyte (E), leucocyte (L) and serum (S) magnesium, serum selenium and zinc, and vitamin B1, B2, A or E status were assessed in 22 patients with fibromyalgia and in 23 age-matched healthy controls. Red blood cell magnesium concentrations were measured in samples from 89 patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome and the results compared to those found in an age and sex matched group selected from the normal population. No significant difference was found. Six patients were further investigated using a magnesium loading test to determine if there was any evidence of magnesium deficiency associated with this disorder. None was found. There is therefore no indication for the use of magnesium therapy in the management of this condition.

Jejuno-ileal bypass surgery for morbid obesity can cause metabolic and electrolyte imbalances. Another case of severe, symptomatic magnesium deficiency after jejuno-ileal bypass surgery is described. This complication was not encountered in a prospective evaluation of the magnesium status after gastric restrictive bypass surgery. Significant (p less than 0.005) body weight decrease was not accompanied by any (serum, erythrocyte or urinary) evidence of magnesium loss for 12 months after surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Study aimed to determine the effects of zinc supplementation/deficiency on the histological structure and elements levels in bone tissue in ovariectomized rats.
METHODS: The study included 40 Sprague-Dawley type adult female rats, divided as follows: Control, ovariectomized, ovariectomized + zinc supplemented, ovariectomized + zinc deficient groups. At the end of the study bone tissues (femur) were collected to determine the levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iron, aluminium, chrome, lithium, lead, nickel, and manganese. BACKGROUND: Magnesium regulates neuronal excitability, NMDA receptor activity, and cerebrovascular tone. Dysmagnesemia is common in patients with acute brain injury (>65%), yet large randomized trials of magnesium neuroprotection have been neutral despite strong physiological rationale and consistent observational associations with outcomes. A key limitation may be diagnostic misclassification: the total serum magnesium poorly reflects the biologically active ionized fraction and may misclassify magnesium status in 20-85% of ICU patients during critical illness.
