Dissociating recollection from familiarity: electrophysiological evidence that familiarity for faces is associated with a posterior old/new effect.

In recognition memory research, a tension exists between dual-process and single-process models of episodic retrieval. Dual-process models propose that 'familiarity' assessment and the 'recollection' of contextual information are independent processes, while single-process models claim that one common process supports retrieval. Event-related potentials (ERPs) have been used to show dissociations between the mid frontal and the left parietal ERP old/new effects, which have been associated with familiarity and recollection, respectively. While much ERP evidence favours dual-process theory, Yove

Memory-related brain potentials for visual objects in early AD show impairment and compensatory mechanisms.

Impaired episodic memory is the primary feature of early Alzheimer's disease (AD), but not all memories are equally affected. Patients with AD and amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) remember pictures better than words, to a greater extent than healthy elderly. We investigated neural mechanisms for visual object recognition in 30 patients (14 AD, 16 aMCI) and 36 cognitively unimpaired healthy (19 in the "preclinical" stage of AD). Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants performed a visual object recognition task. Hippocampal occupancy (integrity), amyloid (

Diabetes and cognitive systems in older black and white persons.

We examined the association of type 2 diabetes mellitus to function in different cognitive systems in older black and white persons. Participants were 1437 persons (28.1% black; 72.9% women; mean age 78.4 y, education 14.5, Mini-Mental State Examination 27.9) free of dementia, enrolled in the Minority Aging Research Study or Memory and Aging Project, 2 epidemiologic, community-based cohort studies of aging and cognition. Summary measures of 5 cognitive domains and global cognition were derived from 19 neuropsychologic tests. Diabetes, by medication inspection and history, was present in 15.3%

[Developmental amnesia in the premature infant].

All types of memory disorders have been observed in children, although these reports are rare. Developmental amnesia selectively involves episodic daily life memory while semantic learning is respected and general intelligence is not affected. Daily life is severely disturbed by this cognitive disorder usually occurring after hypoxic ischemic injury with bilateral hippocampal atrophy on MRI. Memory disorders are underdiagnosed in at-risk patients and rarely reported. We report on a former small-for-gestational-age preterm infant with no obvious hypoxic event during perinatal life. The follow-u

Metamemory in Alzheimer's disease.

Alois Alzheimer's first publication describes his patient's inability to be aware of her condition. One hundred years later, whether or not Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients show impaired awareness of their memory deficits is still of debate. This review makes a novel contribution, arguing that the ideal empirical tool to assess this question is the metamemory framework. The fact that the metamemory framework offers models of healthy memory and metamemory function and ready-developed measures mapped onto theoretical constructs, means that it is a useful paradigm to explore the question of memo

Elaboration versus suppression of cued memories: influence of memory recall instruction and success on parietal lobe, default network, and hippocampal activity.

Functional imaging studies of episodic memory retrieval consistently report task-evoked and memory-related activity in the medial temporal lobe, default network and parietal lobe subregions. Associated components of memory retrieval, such as attention-shifts, search, retrieval success, and post-retrieval processing also influence regional activity, but these influences remain ill-defined. To better understand how top-down control affects the neural bases of memory retrieval, we examined how regional activity responses were modulated by task goals during recall success or failure. Specifically,

Hippocampal Theta Distinguishes between Memory-Guided and Exploratory Saccades in Humans.

Memory shapes how we explore the visual world, but the neural mechanisms linking mnemonic processes to eye movements during naturalistic viewing remain poorly understood. Theta-band oscillatory activity in the hippocampus is time-locked with eye movements in primates, suggesting a putative mechanism for coordinating mnemonic processing and oculomotor behavior. Yet, it remains unknown whether this coupling generalizes to episodic memory-guided viewing in humans, whether slow (3-6 Hz) and fast (6-10 Hz) theta bands play dissociable functions, and whether this coupling is sensitive to the directi

Lateralisation and localisation of spatial and verbal associative recognition memory.

Episodic memory is the conscious recalling of past experiences. The neural underpinnings of this skill have long been of clinical interest, as deficits can be debilitating, including to those with temporal lobe pathology. This study sought to improve the assessment of those with unilateral temporal lobe pathology by comparing the localisation and lateralisation of successful spatial and verbal associative recognition memory using 3D time-frequency analysis and connectivity analysis of EEG data, while reducing perceptual confounds. Twenty right-handed participants aged 18 to 33 years were inclu

Memory and language impairments are associated with anxiety disorder severity in childhood.

Introduction Children with anxiety disorders have been suggested to possess deficits in verbal fluency, shifting and attention, with inconsistent results regarding working memory and its subcomponents. This study extends previous findings by analyzing the performance of children with anxiety disorders in a wide range of neuropsychological functions. Methods We evaluated 54 children with a primary diagnosis of an anxiety disorder according to diagnostic criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) using subtests of a neuropsychological battery. Patterns of False Memory in Patients with Huntington's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Increased false memory recognition in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) has been widely reported; however, the underlying memory constructive processes remain unclear. The present study explored gist memory, item-specific memory, and monitoring ability in patients with HD. METHOD: Twenty-five patients (including 13 patients with mild HD and 12 patients with moderate-to-severe HD) and 30 healthy comparison participants (HC) were recruited. We used the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm to investigate participants' false recognition patterns, along with neuropsychological

[A case of cerebral infarction presenting as retrosplenial amnesia].

We report a 73-year-old right-handed female who presented with an acute amnesic syndrome. On November 18, 1991, she was admitted to a local hospital complaining of sudden-onset vertigo and nausea, but immediately after the admission she developed an amnesic syndrome. On November 27, she was transferred to our hospital for further assessment of her memory disturbance. Neurologically she was normal except for mild right hemianopsia and increased deep tendon reflexes in the extremities. Neuropsychological assessments were performed over 3 weeks. She was always alert, attentive, and cooperative. S

Angiotensin modulates long-term memory expression but not long-term memory storage in the crab Chasmagnathus.

Memory reconsolidation is a dynamic process in which a previously consolidated memory becomes labile following reactivation by a reminder. In a previous study in the crab Chasmagnathus memory model, we showed that a water-shortage episode, via angiotensin modulation during reconsolidation, could reveal a memory that otherwise remains unexpressed: weakly trained animals cannot reveal long-term memory (LTM) except when an episode of noticeable ethological meaning, water deprivation, is contingent upon reconsolidation. However, these results are at variance with two of our previous interpretation

Embodied simulations improve memory, but which is the most effective? The crucial role of action observation and its dynamic interplay with motor imagery ability.

Literature has shown that memory can be influenced by sensorimotor simulations at encoding as those involved in motor imagery (MI), action observation (AO), or affordances elicited by visual object presentation (OBJ). Such simulations can improve memory by creating multimodal and thus, more accessible memory traces. However, no research has yet compared all these simulations within a single study and investigated their relationship with participants' imagery ability. The current study aimed to fill this gap by assessing the effects of different simulations on episodic memory for objects that i

Differential effects of total sleep deprivation on contextual and spatial memory: modulatory effects of modafinil.

The aim of the present work was to investigate in mice the effects of a total 10-hr sleep deprivation on contextual (episodic-like) and spatial (reference) memory tasks. For that purpose, mice learned two consecutive discriminations (D1 and D2) in a 4-hole board involving either identical (Serial Spatial Discrimination, SSD) or distinct (Contextual Serial Discrimination, CSD) internal contextual cues. In a second step, we intended to assess the corrective effect of modafinil on memory impairments generated by sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation was triggered through an alternative platform ap

[Hippocampo-parahippocampal area and its role on human memory].

The hippocampo-parahippocampal area (medial temporal lobe system: MTL) plays an important role on human memory. Its bilateral damage may produce selective and severe impairment of anterograde and retrograde episodic memory. Our MRI volumetric study of 5 cases of pure MTL amnesia secondary to herpes simplex encephalitis showed that degree of amnesia and recovery was significantly correlated with the volume of the remaining or functioning MTL. It has to be kept in mind that MTL is a part of a widely distributed memory system. Our functional imaging studies on verbal memory showed that one of the

Severe amnestic-cognitive syndrome after right-sided resection in a patient with bilateral trigonal choroid plexus xanthogranulomas: illustrative case.

Choroid plexus xanthogranulomas are rare, typically incidental intraventricular lesions that infrequently become symptomatic. When symptomatic, they most often present with headache or hydrocephalus, whereas cognitive sequelae and postoperative neuropsychological outcomes remain poorly characterized. A 63-year-old right-handed man with bilateral trigonal intraventricular lesions, larger on the right, presented with headaches and a history of subjective progressive memory complaints. He underwent resection of the right-sided lesion through a right temporoparietal approach. Immediately after sur

Neural Correlates of Successful Memory Encoding in Kindergarten and Early Elementary School Children: Longitudinal Trends and Effects of Schooling.

From age 5 to 7, there are remarkable improvements in children's cognitive abilities ("5-7 shift"). In many countries, including Germany, formal schooling begins in this age range. It is, thus, unclear to what extent exposure to formal schooling contributes to the "5-7 shift." In this longitudinal study, we investigated if schooling acts as a catalyst of maturation. We tested 5-year-old children who were born close to the official cutoff date for school entry and who were still attending a play-oriented kindergarten. One year later, the children were tested again. Some of the children had expe

Mammillary body atrophy and other MRI correlates of school-age outcome following neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

The mammillary bodies (MB) and hippocampi are important for memory function and are often affected following neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The aim of this study was to assess neurodevelopmental outcome in 10-year-old children with HIE with and without therapeutic hypothermia. Additional aims were to assess the associations between MB atrophy, brain volumes (including the hippocampi), white matter microstructure and neurodevelopmental outcome at school-age. Ten-year-old children with HIE were included, who were treated with therapeutic hypothermia (n = 22) or would have qualif

An Examination of the Word Memory Test as a Measure of Memory.

This study examined the utility of the Word Memory Test (WMT) as a measure of verbal episodic memory by comparing select WMT subtests to the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) First and Second Editions (CVLT-II) across two samples. Correlations between the WMT and CVLT/CVLT-II subtests were statistically significant in the expected direction. Effect sizes were examined to assess the degree to which the WMT memory subtests and the CVLT First Edition subtests discriminated between groups of people who would be expected to differ from each other in verbal memory abilities. Autobiographical memory decline in Alzheimer's disease, a theoretical and clinical overview.

Autobiographical memory, or memory for personal experiences, allows individuals to define themselves and construct a meaningful life story. Decline of this ability, as observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD), results in an impaired sense of self and identity. In our model (AMAD: Autobiographical Memory in Alzheimer's Disease), we present a critical review of theories and findings regarding cognitive and neuroanatomical underpinnings of autobiographical memory and its decline in AD and highlight studies on its clinical rehabilitation. We propose that autobiographical recall in AD is mainly charact
