[Rational hormonal diagnosis of oligomenorrhea].

In a study, conducted by two clinics in Berlin and Hamburg, specializing in reproductive endocrinology, the anamnestic, clinical, and laboratory data of 170 oligomenorrheic patients (menstrual intervals between 35 and 90 days) were evaluated in order to determine the frequency of possible causes of oligomenorrhea. Pathological hormone levels were found in two thirds of all patients. The order of frequency of abnormal hormone levels was as follows: hyperandrogenemia (testosterone and/or DHEA-sulfate) in 41.8%, hyperprolactinemia in 25.9%, abnormal thyroid function (TSH and/or TRH-induced TSH) i

Alternate delivery systems for contraceptive progestogens.

Research continues toward developing an universally acceptable, safe, and effective contraceptive to inhibit the female reproductive process. Progestational systems, either alone or in combination with small amounts of estrogen, approach such an ideal. The pregnane and 19-nortestosterone progestins were examined in this review with regard to contraceptive mechanisms of action and major side effects, such as menstrual abnormalities, metabolic changes, neoplasia, and teratogenicity. These steroids provide highly effective and long-acting contraception, and bypass the oral route of administration

Sleep and female reproduction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep disturbances are increasing in prevalence in North America. There is growing evidence that poor sleep quality and short sleep duration may adversely affect circadian rhythms, which in turn may affect female reproduction. The objective of this review is to evaluate recent literature on the association between sleep disturbances and female reproduction. RECENT FINDINGS: There is accumulating evidence that sleep quality and duration are important for female reproduction, but epidemiologic research is limited. Recent studies provide suggestive evidence that sleep disorder

Effect of polycystic ovary syndrome on cardiac autonomic function at a late fertile age: a prospective Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies of women in their 20s and 30s have reported impaired autonomic function in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We aimed to study, for the first time, whether PCOS is associated with impaired cardiac autonomic function independent of metabolic and hormonal status in their late reproductive years. DESIGN: A prospective Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (NFBC1966) study including 5889 women born in 1966 and followed through the age of 46. At that age, n=3706/5123 women (72%) answered the postal questionnaires and n=3280/5123 women (64%) participated in the

Descriptive statistics, between-groups comparisons, and associations between categorical variables were calculated. RESULTS: Of athletes studied, 49.5% were currently using HCs and 69.8% had used HCs a

Menstrual cyclicity post OC withdrawal in PCOS: Use of non-hormonal options.

There is no data on menstrual cyclicity post oral contraceptive (OC) withdrawal with nonhormonal options in PCOS patients. OC could affect obesity, insulin and gonadotropins factors integral to pathogenesis of PCOS, thereby adversely affecting the HPG axis. Menstrual cycles of PCOS patients were retrospectively studied post OCP. Patients developing regular versus irregular cycles post OC were compared. Forty-eight PCOS patients were followed for an average of 1.9 years post OC. Thirty-six (75%) achieved regular cycles over a period of one year with other nonhormonal options like spironolactone
