A reassessment of Goodrich's model of cranial nerve phylogeny.

The first detailed comparisons of the organization and development of craniate head structure occurred during the period 1870-1940. Most wor … ly. Goodrich's model thus assumes that there is a simple one-to-one relationship between nerves and mesodermal derivatives. Review of current data on the roles of neural crest, neuromeric, placodal and somitomeric tissue in the development of vertebrate heads refutes Goodrich's contentions and suggests that at least three, possibly four, separate series of …

Bony changes of PKU neonates unrelated to phenylalanine levels.

In 1962 bone abnormalities were described radiographically in phenylketonuria patients. Later, observations were made on PKU infants during … ne level, and to the age of the children at referral. This finding suggests that the cause of these mesodermal changes is not a deviation of a single amino acid in the infant, but that they are caused by an intrauterine amino acid imbalance.

Malignant müllerian tumours of the uterus.

Thirty-two cases of malignant Müllerian tumours of the uterus of the mixed mesodermal type were investigated. Histological examinations were performed on tissue obtained during curettage or biopsy and/or surgical removal of the uterus; in 4 cases postmortem examination was also carried out. The biphasic tumours of the uterus were classified into four groups and comprised 44% of alle uterine sarcomas. In 10 of the 28 cases in which uterine curettage or cervical biopsy was carried out, the final diagnosis was clarified when the tumorous uterus was removed. The prognosis was poorer for heterologo…

The spectrum of primary open angle glaucoma. I: Senile sclerotic glaucoma versus high tension glaucoma.

This paper describes two subgroups of primary open angle glaucoma: senile sclerotic glaucoma in the elderly with relatively low intraocular pressures, normal chamber angles, senile excavation, peripapillary atrophy and choroidal sclerosis; high tension glaucoma in the younger age-group with high intraocular pressures, signs of mesodermal dysgenesis in the chamber angle, deep and steep excavation, little peripapillary atrophy and no choroidal sclerosis. The description of senile sclerotic glaucoma is new as are the differences in the chamber angle and peripapillary atrophy. The size of the visu…

Comparative analysis of the cardiomyocyte differentiation potential of induced pluripotent stem cells reprogrammed from human atrial or ventricular fibroblasts.

Background: We had shown that cardiomyocytes (CMs) were more efficiently differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) w … s. Results: The time-course of expression for pluripotency genes (OCT4, NANOG, and SOX2), the early mesodermal marker Brachyury, the cardiac mesodermal markers MESP1 and Gata4, and the cardiovascular progenitor-cell transcription factor NKX2.5 were broadly similar in AiPSC-CMs and ViPSC-CMs during the differentiation protocol. Syndrome of occipitoatlantoaxial hypermobility, cranial settling, and chiari malformation type I in patients with hereditary disorders of connective tissue.

OBJECT: Chiari malformation Type I (CM-I) is generally regarded as a disorder of the paraxial mesoderm. The authors report an association between CM-I and hereditary disorders of connective tissue (HDCT) that can present with lower brainstem symptoms attributable to occipitoatlantoaxial hypermobility and cranial settling. METHODS: The prevalence of HDCT was determined in a prospectively accrued cohort of 2813 patients with CM-I. All patients underwent a detailed medical and neuroradiological workup that included an assessment of articular mobility. Osseous structures composing the craniocervi…

A cross-tissue physicochemical causal chain underlying vertebrate mandibular morphogenesis.

Understanding morphogenesis increasingly requires attention to physical aspects. In complex embryonic structures comprising multiple adjacent tissues, morphogenetic change in one tissue can impose geometric constraints that shape another tissue. However, such cross-tissue physical coordination remains largely unexplored. Using zebrafish jaw development, we show that dynamic folding of the oral ectoderm drives the elongation and fusion of mandibular primordia by constraining and guiding mesenchymal cell motion. This folding is initiated by Shh signaling, mainly from the adjacent neural tube, wh

Single cell sequencing of the mouse anterior palate reveals mesenchymal heterogeneity.

BACKGROUND: Cleft palate is one of the most prevalent birth defects. Mice are useful for studying palate development because of their morphological and genetic similarities to humans. In mice, palate development occurs between embryonic days (E)11.5 to 15.5. Single cell transcriptional profiles of palate cell populations have been a valuable resource for the craniofacial research community, but we lack a single cell transcriptional profile for anterior palate at E13.5, at the transition from proliferation to shelf elevation. RESULTS: A detailed single cell RNA sequencing analysis reveals hete

Incidental dural-based mass: Surprisingly leiomyoma.

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle cell tumor commonly occurring in the uterine myometrium. Extra-uterine tumors are infrequent and those occurring in an intracranial location are extremely rare. We report a primary intracranial leiomyoma as an incidental autopsy finding in a 60-year-old woman, who died of acute myocardial infarction.

Sox10-cre BAC transgenes reveal temporal restriction of mesenchymal cranial neural crest and identify glandular Sox10 expression.

Diversity of neural crest derivatives has been studied with a variety of approaches during embryonic development. In mammals Cre-LoxP lineage tracing is a robust means to fate map neural crest relying on cre driven from regulatory elements of early neural crest genes. Sox10 is an essential transcription factor for normal neural crest development. A variety of efforts have been made to label neural crest derivatives using partial Sox10 regulatory elements to drive cre expression. To date published Sox10-cre lines have focused primarily on lineage tracing in specific tissues or during early feta

To roll the eyes and snap a bite - function, development and evolution of craniofacial muscles.

Craniofacial muscles, muscles that move the eyes, control facial expression and allow food uptake and speech, have long been regarded as a variation on the general body muscle scheme. However, evidence has accumulated that the function of head muscles, their developmental anatomy and the underlying regulatory cascades are distinct. This article reviews the key aspects of craniofacial muscle and muscle stem cell formation and discusses how this differs from the trunk programme of myogenesis; we show novel RNAseq data to support this notion. We also trace the origin of head muscle in the chordat

Lipomatous variant of angiomyofibroblastoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Angiomyofibroblastoma represents a rare, benign mesenchymal tumor with a predilection for the vulvovaginal region. Lipomatous change may occur but rarely comprises a substantial component of the lesion. There are only eight reports in the English language literature describing the lipomatous variant of this tumor. We describe a further lipomatous angiomyofibroblastoma that occurred on the labium majus of a 49-year-old woman. The histopathologic and immunohistochemical features are described, and the collective experience in the literature is reviewed.

Significance of tumor satellite variables in reflecting the epithelial-mesenchymal transition of tongue cancer.

The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is important in determining the biological behaviors and clinical prognosis of tongue cancer. However, the heterogeneous nature of the cancer populations renders clinical grading controversial. The main purpose of EMT analysis is to identify the cell population with the greatest metastatic potentials. Therefore, tumor satellites that form at the invasive front of tongue cancer may be the optimal target for EMT evaluation. From 1999 to 2002, surgical samples of 117 consecutive tongue cancer patients diagnosed and treated at the National Taiwan Univers

Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma of the liver is associated with mesenchymal hamartoma and multiple chromosomal abnormalities: a review of eleven cases.

Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma (UES) of the liver is a primitive mesenchymal, malignant neoplasm occurring in children. The link between UES and mesenchymal hamartoma (MH) is controversial. Whether they share the same histiogenesis, representing 2 ends of a spectrum, or are distinct entities is unclear. The genetic aberrations of these neoplasms are not well understood, although a common breakpoint (19q13.4) was recently identified. The purpose of this study was to elucidate immunohistochemical markers that may establish a link between the 2 tumors by reviewing cases of UES and MH. Cases o

Focal Mullerian duct retention in male mice with constitutively activated beta-catenin expression in the Mullerian duct mesenchyme.

Müllerian-inhibiting substance (MIS), which is produced by fetal Sertoli cells shortly after commitment of the bipotential gonads to testicular differentiation, causes Müllerian duct (MD) regression. In the fetal female gonads, MIS is not expressed and the MDs will differentiate into the internal female reproductive tract. We have investigated whether dysregulated β-catenin activity affects MD regression by expressing a constitutively activated nuclear form of β-catenin in the MD mesenchyme. We show that constitutively activated (CA) β-catenin causes focal retention of MD tissue in the epididy

Role of tissue interaction between pineal primordium and neighboring tissues in avian pineal morphogenesis studied by intraocular transplantation.

Tissue interactions play an essential role in organogenesis during embryonic development. However, virtually no attempts have been made to study the role of tissue interaction in pineal development. In the present study we examined the inductive role of the epidermis and mesenchyme in the morphogenesis of quail pineal glands. The pineal rudiment is first observed at embryonic day 2 (E2: 2 days of incubation) at the dorsal midline of the diencephalon as a short semi-spherical protrusion. Electron microscopic observations revealed that no mesenchymal cells are found between the epidermis and the

Keratin 1 expression in endothelia and mesenchymal tumors: an immunohistochemical analysis of normal and neoplastic tissues.

Keratin polypeptides of the nonhair type, numbered 1 through 20 in the Moll catalog, are selectively expressed in normal and neoplastic tissues. Keratin 1 (K1), the highest-molecular-weight keratin (67 kd), was generally considered specific for keratinizing squamous epithelia. However, recent studies have shown that it is an integral component of the multiprotein kininogen receptor of endothelial cells. A library of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples was evaluated immunohistochemically (avidin-biotin peroxidase complex method) for K1 expression using a specific monoclonal antibod
