Effect of amoxicillin use on oral microbiota in young children.

Dental plaque samples from 40 children were screened for the presence of bacteria resistant to amoxicillin. Fifteen children had used amoxicillin and 25 had not used any antibiotic in the 3 months prior to sample collection. All (100%) of the children harbored amoxicillin-resistant oral bacteria. The median percentage of the total cultivable oral microbiota resistant to amoxicillin was 2.4% (range, 0.1 to 14.3%) in children without amoxicillin use and 10.9% (range, 0.8 to 97.3%) in children with amoxicillin use, with the latter value being significantly higher (P < 0.01). A total of 224 amoxic…

The gut microbiota-metabolite-target axis in insomnia: network pharmacology and gut microbiota profiling insights into pathogenesis and intervention with Cinnamomi Cortex-Gardeniae Fructus.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism underlying the association between gut microbiota metabolites and insomnia, focusing on the "gut microbiota-metabolite-target" axis. The Cinnamomi Cortex-Gardeniae Fructus (CC-GF) combination was used as an intervention. METHODS: Network pharmacology was applied to predict insomnia-related gut microbiota metabolites and their targets. A PCPA-induced rat insomnia model was established, and gut microbiota dysbiosis was validated using 16S rRNA sequencing. Core gut microbiota were identified, and core targets were screened via protein-protein interaction (…

Feeder- and Drinker-Associated Microbiota Differ from Host-Associated Fecal Microbiota During a Commercial Broiler Production Cycle with Age-Associated Changes in Taxonomic Composition.

Broiler chickens are continuously exposed to microorganisms in the production environment, but the relationship between microorganisms on bird-contact surfaces and fecal microbiota remains unclear. In this exploratory observational study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to compare microbial communities in feeder- and drinker-associated surface samples and individual fecal samples during one production cycle in a single commercial system housing Ross 308 broilers. The dataset comprised 22 individual fecal samples collected on days 1, 7, 19, 27, and 39 and four composite feeder- or drink…

Fecal microbiota transplantation from Hezuo pigs alleviates intestinal inflammatory injury in Clostridium perfringens type C-infected piglets via modulation gut microbiota and intestinal barrier.

Clostridium perfringens type C (CpC)-induced piglet diarrhea is a major challenge in the swine industry. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from Hezuo pigs against intestinal injury in Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire (DLY) suckling piglets infected with CpC. Piglets were divided into two groups, including CpC-challenged control group and FMT-treatment group, which received fecal suspension from Hezuo pigs prior to infection. Morphological, immunological, microbiomic, and metabolomic analyses were conducted after post-infection. The results…

Prospective birth cohort: Cephalosporins drive gut microbiota and food allergy.

BACKGROUND: The biological association between early-life antibiotic exposure and the risk of food allergy (FA) remains unclear. Given the w … se or treatment course, suggesting it may act as a "switch" triggering allergic susceptibility. Gut microbiota and metabolomic analyses revealed that cephalosporins exposure led to dysbiosis, downregulation of tryptophan metabolism and nitric oxide (NO) production pathways, which were associated with impaired intestinal barrier function and T-helper 2 (Th2) …

Vagal sensing of altered gut microbiota links to externalizing behaviors.

Interoceptive brain responses triggered by intestinal microbiota influence mood-related behaviors such as anxiety and depression. Although genetic mutations can alter the gut microbiome, how alterations in the gut microbiome associated with host genetic variations relate to behavioral outcomes is not fully understood. We investigated how Sirtuin 3 (Sirt3) deficiency is linked to altered gut-brain interactions and mood-related behaviors. Gut microbiota composition and behavior were compared between Sirt3-knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice. Cohousing and heterozygous littermate controls were …

Gut microbiota dysbiosis: Pathogenic drivers and emerging phage-based therapeutics.

Gut microbiota dysbiosis driven by pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria, including Clostridioides difficile, adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC), Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, and Campylobacter spp., disrupts colonization resistance, epithelial barrier integrity, and immune homeostasis, thereby contributing to the development of inflammatory and metabolic diseases. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms through which these microorganisms promote gut dysbiosis and critically evaluate current microbiome…

Gut irradiation and microbiota status modulate the meningeal immune landscape.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an important part of curative treatment in many common abdominal and pelvic cancers. However, the gastrointestinal toxi … immune alterations were prolonged and dynamically shifted across time points. Depletion of the gut microbiota partially attenuated both local and systemic immune responses, particularly affecting RT-induced increases in neutrophil and monocyte populations, implicating microbiota-dependent mechanisms in mediating these effects. After recovery from acute inte …

Gut microbiota and pattern recognition receptors in polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is increasingly recognized as a disorder of impaired immune-endocrine homeostasis. Emerging evidence indicates that intestinal dysbiosis and microbial metabolite imbalance can activate pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), forming a PRR microbiota reproductive axis that contributes to PCOS pathophysiology. This review synthesizes current insights into how gut-derived signals, including LPS, peptidoglycans, SCFAs, bile acids, and tryptophan metabolites, modulate TLR-, NLR-, and RLR-mediated pathways to disrupt ovarian, endometrial, and systemic immune regulation…

Transplantation of encapsulated fecal microbiota: research progress and future trends.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) demonstrates significant efficacy in treating intestinal disorders, such as recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). However, traditional FMT relies on invasive delivery methods (e.g., colonoscopy or use of a nasoenteric tube) and lacks standardized donor screening, limiting its widespread clinical adoption and scalability. As a key formulation of live biotherapeutic products (LBPs), encapsulated FMT represents a transition from empirical microbial transfer to engineered biotherapeutics, offering a safer and more convenient approac…

Gut microbiota metabolites positively impacts chemotherapy effects in colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, largely due to late-stage diagnosis and limited efficacy of current therapies. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the standard chemotherapeutic agent used in CRC treatment; however, its effectiveness is often hampered by resistance, toxicity, and suboptimal outcomes in advanced-stage tumors. Recent evidence suggests that gut microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) exert anticancer effects and may hold promise as therapeutic adjuvants. In this study, we investigated the potential of a physiologically …

Perfluorooctanoic acid exposure disrupts gut microbiota and aggravates experimental colitis.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a prevalent and environmentally persistent compound in the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) family, is ubiquitously detected in the food chain and has been epidemiologically linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the actions and mechanisms by which PFOA exposure influences colonic inflammation under colitis conditions remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of dietary PFOA exposure on colitis severity using a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model. Our results suggest that dietary PFOA exposure

Astaxanthin improve the intestinal microbiota and metabolism after ischemic stroke.

As a prevalent cerebrovascular disorder, the association between ischemic stroke and gut microbiota has garnered increasing attention. Recent studies have confirmed that astaxanthin exhibits significant protective effects against ischemic stroke. However, there is still a lack of clear experimental evidence regarding whether astaxanthin can regulate the gut microbiota in patients with ischemic stroke. To investigate the neuroprotective mechanism of astaxanthin and its regulatory effect on gut microbiota, a rat stroke model was established using the middle cerebral artery occlusion method. Mole…

Tryptophan metabolism: a critical bridge linking gut microbiota to depression.

Depression is a major global public health challenge with limitations in current therapies. Emerging evidence highlights that gut microbiota (GM) critically regulates the gut-brain axis via tryptophan (Trp) metabolism. Trp is metabolized through host-directed serotonin (5-HT) and kynurenine (KYN) pathways, as well as microbiota-specific indole derivative pathways. In depression, gut dysbiosis shifts Trp metabolism toward the KYN pathway, leading to accumulation of neurotoxic metabolites such as quinolinic acid and reduced 5-HT synthesis. Microbiota-derived indoles, functioning as key aryl hydr…

Gut microbiota and systemic sclerosis: Mechanistic insights and microbial therapies.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease characterized by progressive fibrosis in the skin and multiple organs. The cause and mechanism of SSc remain largely elusive, and there are limited therapeutic options available that effectively alter the progression of fibrosis associated with the disease. Emerging evidence indicates that the gut microbiota and its metabolites play a crucial regulatory role in maintaining immune homeostasis and modulating fibrotic responses in SSc. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of clinical evidence regarding gut microbiota dysbiosis in SSc…

Gut Microbiota Signatures and Ecological Network Alterations Associated with Hemodialysis.

Hemodialysis (HD) is the most widely used renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and is frequently accompanied by long-term complications that impair quality of life, including metabolic and inflammatory disturbances. Growing evidence suggests that these complications may be linked to alterations in the gut microbiota; however, microbial composition and interaction patterns in HD patients remain incompletely characterized. In this exploratory, cross-sectional study, high throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to profile the fecal microbiota of patients…

How gut microbiota modulate anesthetic drug response and perioperative outcomes.

The pursuit of precision in anesthesiology is persistently challenged by profound and unpredictable inter-patient variability in drug response. While pharmacogenomics has provided critical insights, a significant portion of this variability remains unexplained. Emerging evidence now positions the gut microbiota as a central, dynamic regulator of perioperative pharmacology. This review introduces and explores the concept, used here as a working label, of the anesthetic pharmacomicrobiome, defined as the set of microbial-host interactions that may influence perioperative drug disposition and eff…
