Should a Teenager Be Allowed to Leave the Hospital AMA to Attend His Father's Funeral?

What should physicians do when an adolescent wishes to risk his physical health and leave the hospital to attend the funeral of his late father? What if the young man's mother, and only remaining guardian, both supports and encourages such a decision? In this Ethics Rounds discussion, we examine the legality, morality, and safety of discharging a minor under such conditions.

Opioid Epidemic Grief and Characterological Harm Reduction.

This article considers what it might mean to do the moral work of grieving during an opioid epidemic. Becoming callous, bitter, or resentful are harms we can suffer to our characters when grieving losses, especially at epidemic scale. This article suggests how appreciating beauty can play roles in grieving that could help mitigate these harms.

Mapping Conscience: Network Analysis Into the Differences in Maturation of Offending and Non-Offending Adolescents.

Conscience is a diagnostically relevant concept in forensic psychiatry, but often misinterpreted as an all-or-none phenomenon. We conceptualize the conscience as a psychic function in which elements like empathy, self-conscience emotions such as shame, guilt and pride, and moral orientation work together. The differences in conscience functioning can be described in terms of developmental levels of integration. We conducted network analyses on data collected via a questionnaire survey held among 52 offending and 243 non-offending juveniles. We displayed two networks: One representing the non-o

GLP-1 receptor agonists and the emergence of treatment-related stigma: a call for conceptual clarity.

Although GLP-1 medications have transformed obesity treatment, their rapid expansion has occurred alongside moral narratives emphasizing discipline, willpower, and personal responsibility in weight management. These narratives often portray GLP-1-assisted weight loss as a "shortcut" or as "taking the easy way out" compared to lifestyle-based approaches such as diet and exercise. Such perceptions reflect broader weight stigmatizing attitudes; however, GLP-1-related stigma represents an emerging and distinct form of weight stigma in which judgments extend beyond body size to include the perceive

Domestic ecologies of gender: Women, material life, and eco-folklore in Saudi proverbs.

This article advances an ecocritical reading of women-focused Saudi proverbs as a distinctive form of eco-folklore, where gendered norms are naturalized through domestic material and environmental imaginaries. Analyzing a corpus of 60 proverbs from the Saudi National Encyclopedia's regional archives, the study integrates feminist critical discourse analysis with material ecocriticism to reveal how proverbial discourse mobilizes everyday objects and processes bread and heat as emblems of maternal care, cooking vessels as symbols of household responsibility, pests like flies and scorpions as met

Pro-environmental behavior in climate change mitigation: The role of psychological distance.

This research examines consumer pro-environmental behavior and loyalty to energy-efficient appliances, aiming to mitigate the effects of climate change by integrating construal level theory and environmental responsibility foundational theory as the underlying frameworks. This study further develops a behavioral model to better understand how consumers perceive climate change and how their subjective psychological distance cognitively interprets objects, influencing their purchase behavior for energy-efficient appliances. This study also examines the mediating roles of the environmental respon

Laennec and the vesanias: A crossroad of medicine, philosophy, and modern psychiatry.

This article revisits a little-known lecture by René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec (1781-1826), best known as the inventor of the stethoscope, focusing instead on his reflections on mental illness-what he termed vesanias. Delivered at the Collège de France in 1823, the lecture predates modern psychiatry and offers a rare, nuanced view of mental disorders at the crossroads of clinical medicine, philosophy, and Enlightenment moral thought. Laennec distinguishes between five types of mental illness-hallucinations, monomania, mania, dementia, and idiocy-while rejecting the reductionist views of his

Ethics of deceased organ donation and normothermic regional perfusion: donors are 'dead enough'.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) for the donation after circulatory death (DCD) increases the supply and function of organs. However, the procedures used have led to significant ethical controversies. Despite the numerous studies on the subject, moral issues are seldom analyzed comparatively. This article describes and identifies three ethical problems related to NRP, critiquing them with philosophical and ethical suggestions. RECENT FINDINGS: Current literature suggests that using oxygenated blood instead of cold perfusion enhances the function of transplanted organs,

Development and Validation of a Brief Warzone Stressor Exposure Index.

Existing scales mainly focus on danger-based threats of death and bodily harm to assess exposure to traumatic events in war zone. However, major provocations and transgression of deeply held values and moral beliefs, as well as witnessing the suffering of others can be as traumatic as fear-inducing danger-based events. This raises the need for scales that assess both danger- and nondanger-based events among soldiers operating in modern war zones. Norwegian military personnel deployed to Afghanistan between late 2001 and end of 2020 were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey with a

Myofascial pain and treatment: Editorial.

The first article featured in this quarter's overview deserves special attention. Margalef and colleagues developed the first viable animal model of trigger points (TrPs). They also provided evidence of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) near TrPs, which is a new finding that deserves further scientific inquiry (Margalef et al 2019). In 2011, Stecco et al. already mentioned a possible role of hyaluronan, which constitutes a subgroup of GAGs, in the etiology of myofascial pain (Stecco et al 2011). Mayoral Del Moral and colleagues published an excellent study that showed very good inter-examiner reliabil

Different Disgust Domains Specifically Relate to Mental and Contact Contamination Fear in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Evidence From a Path Analytic Model in an Italian Clinical Sample.

Both contact contamination (CC) and mental contamination (MC) fears-which combined represent the most common manifestation of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)-have been widely associated with disgust propensity. However, extant research explored this relationship using measures assessing only pathogen-related disgust, not taking into account the potential role played by sexual and moral disgust, despite literature about MC suggesting that this might be particularly relevant. In Study 1, the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Three Domains of Disgust Scale (TDDS) were asse

Deployment Status and Child Neglect Types in the U.S. Army.

Increases in combat deployments have been associated with rises in rates of child neglect in U.S. military families. Although various types of child neglect have been described in military families, it is unknown whether deployment status is associated with specific types of child neglect and whether other factors, such as substance misuse, play a role. To determine the contribution of service member deployment status to the risk of specific child neglect types, data were collected from 390 substantiated U.S. Army child neglect case files. The contributions of deployment status at the time of

Dutch Protocols for Deliberately Ending the Life of Newborns: A Defence.

The Groningen Protocol, introduced in the Netherlands in 2005 and accompanied by revised guidelines published in a report commissioned by the Royal Dutch Medical Association in 2014, specifies conditions under which the lives of severely ill newborns may be deliberately ended. Its publication came four years after the Netherlands became the first nation to legalize the voluntary active euthanasia of adults, and the Netherlands remains the only country to offer a pathway to protecting physicians who might engage in deliberately ending the life of a newborn (DELN). In this paper, I offer two lin

Central role of altruism in the recruitment of gamete donors.

This paper explores problems associated with using altruism as the central value in gamete donation, and in doing so draws on empirical data that sheds light on why gamete donors choose to donate. Donation of bodily material is, arguably, supposed to be motivated by altruism, and this is the view taken by many European governments. Other values are often ignored or rejected as morally inappropriate. This paper analyses some conceptual and practical problems with the use of altruism as the motivation to determine moral acceptability-drawing on empirical data that suggests gamete donors are not

The blame game: cervical cancer, knowledge of its link to human papillomavirus and stigma.

This two-study paper examined stigma toward women with cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection (STI). For Study 1, participants (N = 352) were randomly assigned to one of four conditions in which they read a brief description of a patient with either cervical or ovarian cancer in which the cause of the patient's cancer was either specified (cervical: HPV, a STI vs. ovarian: family history) or unspecified. Participants in the cervical cancer/cause-specified condition rated the patient as more dirty, dishonest and unwise, and rep

Late abortion. Attitudes amongst young physicians in Romania.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this article is to analyze the way in which young physicians analyze and address the issue of therapeutic abortion. METHODS: A multi-institutional survey was conducted using an online questionnaire containing 10 items. RESULTS: Most respondents agreed with therapeutic abortion (1) if the fetus is not yet viable and the mother is put at immediate risk by the continuation of the pregnancy, and (2) when the pregnancy is over 14 weeks and the prenatal screening identifies a very severe malformation. The lowest rate of acceptance was obtained by the option to terminat

[Fetal experimentation, transplantations, cosmetics and their connection with induced abortion].

The increase in induced abortion produces large numbers of cells, tissues and organs, which are used in several fields of Medicine, either in research or in treatment. The main uses are in Cardiology, Hematology, Metabolism, Embryology, Neurology, Immunology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and Transplantations. Flavor enhancers and cosmetics also benefit. Utilitarianism has led to an increase in abortion-originated cell and tissue banks. Abortion is justified through the manipulation of language. Vested interests give rise to complicity in researchers and society as a whole. Abortion and tissue 'd

God's ruthless embrace: religious belief in three women with borderline personality disorder.

This exploratory study was designed to determine if three people with the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) viewed religion in characteristic and unique ways. The data was analyzed using Object Relations Theory, Attachment Theory, and an integrated cognitive, affect, and object relations theory. I concluded that the participants shared a faith style that resulted from an early developmental failure and that their image and response to God and the moral universe were a re-enactment of the dysfunctional mother/infant dyad. Specifically, God's character was seen as (1) self-evide

Making Muslim babies: IVF and gamete donation in Sunni versus Shi'a Islam.

Medical anthropological research on science, biotechnology, and religion has focused on the "local moral worlds" of men and women as they make difficult decisions regarding their health and the beginnings and endings of human life. This paper focuses on the local moral worlds of infertile Muslims as they attempt to make, in the religiously correct fashion, Muslim babies at in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics in Egypt and Lebanon. As early as 1980, authoritative fatwas issued from Egypt's famed Al-Azhar University suggested that IVF and similar technologies are permissible as long as they do n
