BACKGROUND: As the population of Africa rapidly urbanizes it may be possible to protect large populations from malaria by controlling aquatic stages of mosquitoes. Here we present a baseline evaluation of the ability of community members to detect mosquito larval habitats with minimal training and supervision in the first weeks of an operational urban malaria control program.
METHODS: The Urban Malaria Control Programme of Dar es Salaam recruited and provided preliminary training to teams of Community-Owned Resource Persons (CORPs) who performed weekly surveys of mosquito breeding sites. Two

The increasing resistance of Aedes aegypti to conventional insecticides necessitates the development of eco-friendly alternatives. This study investigates the larvicidal efficacy of Lyngbya sp. SMC 069 extracts, particularly focusing on fatty acid-rich chloroform fractions. Among the solvents tested, the chloroform extract showed the highest activity with 90.58 % mortality at 500 ppm against third-instar larvae. Column chromatography yielded a fast-eluting fraction (FR) with superior potency achieving 98.21 % mortality at 50 ppm and an LC50 of 22.3 ppm. FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of

Microfilariae of Brugia malayi is transmitted to man and other susceptible hosts via mosquito. The transmission of B. malayi from cat to man by Ma. uniformis bite has never been reported. The Ma. uniformis mosquito is the normal vector for Wuchereria bancrofti but has never been reported as a vector for B. malayi, or a susceptible host for the growth and development of the microfilariae of B. malayi. The purpose of this study was to examine the development of B. malayi in Mansonia uniformis after feeding on the blood of an infected cat in the laboratory. The B. malayi infected cat was identifi

This paper investigates a cohort of 2187 laboratory reared Culex quinquefasciatus fed on 69 human volunteers, including 59 persons with different levels of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae and 10 without microfilaria. Mosquitoes were followed until death. Mosquito survival was analysed in relation to the level of microfilaria in the human and larval count in the dead mosquito. Vector mortality during the extrinsic incubation period (12 days post-engorgement) was significantly higher in mosquitoes fed on microfilaraemic volunteers (50%) than in those fed on amicrofilaraemics (29%). Both the p

Here, we describe the development of the MosqTent, an innovative double-chamber mosquito trap in which a human being attracts mosquitoes while is protected from being bitten within the inner chamber of the trap, while mosquitoes are lured to enter an outer chamber where they are trapped. The MosqTent previously collected an average of 3,000 anophelines/man-hour compared to 240 anophelines/man-hour for the human landing catch (HLC), thereby providing high numbers of human host-seeking mosquitoes while protecting the collector from mosquito bites. The MosqTent performed well by collecting a high

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are of significant public health importance because of their ability to transmit major diseases to humans and animals, and are considered as the world's most deadly arthropods. In recent decades, climate change and globalization have promoted mosquito-borne diseases' (MBDs) geographic expansion to new areas, such as North African countries, where some of these MBDs were unusual or even unknown. In this review, we summarize the latest data on mosquito vector species distribution and MBDs affecting both human and animals in North Africa, in order to better underst

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and malaria have long been a health and economic burden in our society. Such illnesses develop after the pathogen, here arboviruses, are transmitted to humans by female mosquitoes during blood meals. In the case of dengue and chikungunya, such pathogens are transmitted to humans by infected Aedes aegypti females. Prior to feeding the insects rest on vertical surfaces. In this work, a surface roughness threshold was observed for live Aedes aegypti colonies, and below a root-mean-squared roughness of Sq < 0.124 μm the mosquitoes were physicall

BACKGROUND: The escalation of insecticide resistance across the World Health Organization (WHO) African region calls for the routine monitoring of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes. While pyrethroids are recommended for use and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) has been prescribed, it is imperative to reevaluate their efficacy across diverse geographical settings. The extent of resistance among mosquitoes to DDT and lambda-cyhalothrin remains understudied in Ika North East, Delta State, Nigeria, where the yellow fever virus was reported in 2019.

Proof-of-concept studies demonstrate that antimalarial drugs designed for human treatment can also be applied to mosquitoes to interrupt malaria transmission. Deploying a new control tool is ideally undertaken within a stewardship programme that maximises a drug's lifespan by minimising the risk of resistance evolution and slowing its spread once emerged. We ask: what are the epidemiological and evolutionary consequences of targeting parasites within mosquitoes? Our synthesis argues that targeting parasites inside mosquitoes (i) can be modelled by readily expanding existing epidemiological fra

Exposure of adult mosquitoes to pyriproxyfen (PPF), an analog of insect juvenile hormone (JH), has shown promise to effectively sterilize female mosquitoes. However, the underlying mechanisms of the PPF-induced decrease in mosquito fecundity are largely unknown. We performed a comprehensive study to dissect the mode of PPF action in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Exposure to PPF prompted the overgrowth of primary follicles in sugar-fed Ae. aegypti females but blocked the development of primary follicles at Christopher's Stage III after blood feeding. Secondary follicles were precociously activated

Transmission blocking activity is an important characteristic of antimalarial drugs, and can be evaluated in malaria volunteer infection studies (VIS). We undertook a pilot VIS to evaluate the suitability of a recently manufactured Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 bank (3D7-MBE-008) for evaluating transmission blocking interventions. Four adults were inoculated with P. falciparum 3D7-MBE-008 infected erythrocytes and administered piperaquine on days 8 and 10 to clear asexual parasitemia while permitting gametocyte development. On day 25, participants were randomised (1:1) to receive either 0.25 mg/kg

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) causes outbreaks of severe disease in domestic ungulates as well as humans in Africa. There is a concern that outbreaks of Rift Valley fever may continue and that this virus may spread into regions where it had not previously been detected. Surveillance and rapid detection are critical to the initiation of an effective disease control program. Here we report on the field evaluation in Kenya of the VectorTest RVFV antigen assay, modeled on the VecTest assay for West Nile virus. The dipsticks provided results in <20 min, were easy to use, and did not require a labo

The mosquito Culex pipiens pipiens is a documented vector of West Nile virus (WNV, Flaviviridae, Flavivirus). Our laboratory colony of C. p. pipiens, however, was repeatedly refractory to experimental transmission of WNV. Our goal was to identify if a cellular process was inhibiting virus infection of the midgut. We examined midguts of mosquitoes fed control and WNV-infected blood meals. Three days after feeding, epithelial cells from abdominal midguts of mosquitoes fed on WNV fluoresced under an FITC filter following Acridine Orange staining, indicating apoptosis in this region. Epithelial ce

Malaria is a life-threatening disease influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, vegetation, water availability, altitude, and rainfall, which shape mosquito breeding and transmission. This study aimed to assess environmental factors influencing mosquito breeding and malaria transmission using geospatial techniques in the Wabi Shebele sub-basin of Ethiopia. Seven key environmental factors: Land use land cover (LULC) types, land surface temperature (LST), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference water index (NDWI), normalized difference moisture index (

BACKGROUND: A number of mosquito-borne viruses (MBVs), such as dengue virus (DENV), zika virus (ZIKV), chikungunya (CHIKV), West Nile virus (WNV), and yellow fever virus (YFV) exert adverse health impacts on the global population. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the prime vectors responsible for the transmission of these viruses. The viruses have acquired a number of routes for successful transmission, including horizontal and vertical transmission. Transovarial transmission is a subset/type of vertical transmission adopted by mosquitoes for the transmission of viruses from females to t

Entomopathogenic fungi and bacteria offer promising alternatives to chemical insecticides for controlling mosquitoes and ticks-key vectors of malaria and Lyme disease. However, their efficacy largely depends on immune interactions between pathogens and hosts. Here, we focus on mosquitoes and ticks as representative disease vectors and dissect conserved and divergent immune responses, from physical barriers to cellular defenses and key humoral pathways, with mechanistic insights informed by insect model systems. Furthermore, we elucidate diverse virulence and immune evasion strategies that enab

Malaria control efforts require implementation of new technologies that manage insecticide resistance. Metarhizium pingshaense provides an effective, mosquito-specific delivery system for potent insect-selective toxins. A semifield trial in a MosquitoSphere (a contained, near-natural environment) in Soumousso, a region of Burkina Faso where malaria is endemic, confirmed that the expression of an insect-specific toxin (Hybrid) increased fungal lethality and the likelihood that insecticide-resistant mosquitoes would be eliminated from a site. Also, as Hybrid-expressing M. pingshaense is effectiv

The recent association of Zika virus with cases of microcephaly has sparked a global health crisis and highlighted the need for mechanisms to combat the Zika vector, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Wolbachia pipientis, a bacterial endosymbiont of insect, has recently garnered attention as a mechanism for arbovirus control. Here we report that Aedes aegypti harboring Wolbachia are highly resistant to infection with two currently circulating Zika virus isolates from the recent Brazilian epidemic. Wolbachia-harboring mosquitoes displayed lower viral prevalence and intensity and decreased disseminated i

Mosquitoes are a source of concern because they transmit many infectious diseases, including Zika virus, chikungunya, and malaria. Accurate and rapid identification of mosquitoes is essential for disease surveillance and control. Genetic diversity in mosquito species, resulting from adaptation to different environments, leads to many differences in morphological characteristics. Traditional identification methods relying on morphology can be time-consuming and unreliable. The study aimed to identify medically and veterinary significant adult mosquito species throughout 2021 in Buraydah City, K

BACKGROUND: Identifying mosquito vectors is crucial for controlling diseases. Automated identification studies using the convolutional neural network (CNN) have been conducted for some urban mosquito vectors but not yet for sylvatic mosquito vectors that transmit the yellow fever. We evaluated the ability of the AlexNet CNN to identify four mosquito species: Aedes serratus, Aedes scapularis, Haemagogus leucocelaenus and Sabethes albiprivus and whether there is variation in AlexNet's ability to classify mosquitoes based on pictures of four different body regions.
METHODS: The specimens were ph
