Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas: a rare tumor case report.

INTRODUCTION: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare tumor, accounting for about 0.3-2.7% of pancreatic neoplasms. It mainly affects young women aged 20-40 years and usually presents as an asymptomatic abdominal mass. Although typically indolent, approximately 15% exhibit malignant potential. Complete surgical resection is curative in most cases. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: A 28-year-old woman was referred for a general surgery consultation due to a suspected adrenal gland mass that had been monitored in her country of origin. The patient was asymptomatic, with normal la

Reduced pancreatic fistula rates and comprehensive cost analysis of robotic versus open pancreaticoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) has emerged as a promising surgical approach for the treatment of periampullary neoplasms, offering the potential benefits of minimally invasive surgery. However, the impact of RPD on clinically relevant pancreatic fistula (CR-PF) rates and overall costs compared to open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) remains unclear, limiting its widespread adoption. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at a high-volume Japanese referral center from 2017 to 2023. A total of 193 patients diagnosed with periampullary neoplasms underwent either

SE-ATT-YOLO- A deep learning driven ultrasound based respiratory motion compensation system for precision radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: The therapeutic management of neoplasm employs high level energy beam to ablate malignant cells, which can cause collateral damage to adjacent normal tissue. Furthermore, respiration-induced organ motion, during radiotherapy can lead to significant displacement of neoplasms. In this work, a non-invasive ultrasound-based deep learning algorithm for respiratory motion compensation system (RMCS) was developed to mitigate the effect of respiratory motion induced neoplasm movement in radiotherapy. METHOD: The deep learning algorithm generated based on modified YOLOv8n (You Only Look Onc

An atypical case of overlapped anti-NMDA-R and anti-GFAP encephalitis secondary to a teratoma of the fallopian tube: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDA-R) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (anti-GFAP) encephalitis are autoimmune conditions that can occur concurrently, often presenting with severe neurological symptoms. Coexistence of both antibodies has been associated with greater resistance to immunotherapy and a higher risk of underlying neoplasms, particularly teratomas, which are commonly linked to anti-NMDA-R encephalitis. Detecting such tumors is crucial, though standard imaging may fail to identify them, especially in atypical locations. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case

Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct: A case report of a rare tumor with a brief review of literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct (IPNB) is a rare neoplasm, mostly found in patients from far Eastern areas where hepatolithiasis and clonorchiasis are endemic. Very few cases are reported from India. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of recurrent cholangitis in a 59-year-old male, initially suspected to have IPNB based on preoperative imaging. Confirmation occurred intraoperatively, with mucin-filled bile ducts and papillary lesions in the resected hepatic duct. Treatment included left hepatectomy, extrahepatic bile duct excision, and Roux-en-Y

Ovarian Masses in Children and Adolescents: A Review of the Literature with Emphasis on the Diagnostic Approach.

Most abdominal masses in the pediatric population derive from the ovaries. Ovarian masses can occur in all ages, although their incidence, clinical presentation and histological distribution vary among different age groups. Children and adolescents may develop non-neoplastic ovarian lesions, such as functional cysts, endometrioma, torsion, abscess and lymphangioma as well as neoplasms, which are divided into germ cell, epithelial, sex-cord stromal and miscellaneous tumors. Germ cell tumors account for the majority of ovarian neoplasms in the pediatric population, while adults most frequently p

Cauda equina neuroendocrine tumors show biological features distinct from other paragangliomas and visceral neuroendocrine tumors.

Cauda equina neuroendocrine tumors (CENETs) are neoplasms of uncertain histogenesis with overlapping features between those of paragangliomas (PGs) and visceral neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). We have explored their biological relationship to both subsets of neuroendocrine neoplasms. The clinical and radiological features of a cohort of 23 CENETs were analyzed. A total of 21 cases were included in tissue microarrays, along with a control group of 38 PGs and 83 NETs. An extensive panel of antibodies was used to assess epithelial phenotype (cytokeratins, E-cadherin, EpCAM, Claudin-4, EMA, CD138),

Robotic Mediastinal Surgery in Patients with Suspected Thymic Neoplasms: First Israeli Experience.

BACKGROUND: Thymectomy is a reliable surgical method for treating patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and benign tumors of the thymus. Despite the advantages of minimally invasive surgical approaches for resection of thymic neoplasms, there are still controversies regarding the superiority of one type of surgery over another. OBJECTIVES: To report the results of our initial Israeli experience with robotic thymectomy in 22 patients with MG and suspected benign thymic tumors. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 22 patients (10 men, 12 women) who underwent robotic thymectomy by a left-sided (

Cytoreduction combined with cryosurgery for the treatment of eyelid neoplasms in dogs: Clinical outcomes and histopathological characterization.

Eyelid neoplasms are among the most common periocular conditions in dogs and can lead to significant ocular morbidity if left untreated. Although surgical excision with blepharoplasty remains the standard of care, cytoreduction combined with cryosurgery has emerged as a less invasive alternative that preserves eyelid integrity. This prospective study evaluated 30 dogs with eyelid masses treated by cytoreductive excision followed by two freeze-thaw cycles delivered via a contact CO₂ cryosurgical unit. Risk factors, tumor types, pre- and postoperative ophthalmic signs were assessed and graded ac

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm worsening glycemic control in a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a rare precancerous pancreatic tumor that accounts for about 1% of pancreatic neoplasms and can impair both exocrine and endocrine function. We present the case of a woman with long-standing type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed worsening glycemic control due to pancreatic IPMN and its pathogenesis. Laboratory evaluation revealed evidence of severe pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, while imaging demonstrated a ductal lesion consistent with IPMN. Endoscopic ultrasound with biopsy confirmed a main-duct IPMN, and the patient subsequently underwe

A Rare Case of Conjunctival Pseudoglandular Hyperplasia Identified During Mohs Micrographic Surgery of an Infraorbital Basal Cell Carcinoma.

A 38-year-old white male presented for Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) consultation with a biopsy proven basal cell carcinoma (BCC) on the right infraorbital cheek encroaching upon the lower eyelid. During MMS, glandular proliferation and goblet cell hyperplasia were visualized on histologic sections, raising concern for an adnexal or mucinous carcinoma. Following referral for expert dermatopathological consultation, a final diagnosis of pseudoglandular hyperplasia of the conjunctiva (PHC) in the setting of chronic conjunctivitis was made, likely having developed in response to longstanding ir

A Late Recurrent Metastatic Breast Cancer Mimicking Primary Pancreatic Cancer: Case Report.

Metastasis to the pancreas from malignant tumors is a rare event, representing only 1% to 2% of all pancreatic neoplasms. They occur in 2 different clinicopathological settings: as a manifestation in widespread metastatic disease or as an isolated mass in the pancreas. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman who had a history of invasive lobular breast cancer treated with radical surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. After 21 years of total remission, she presented for severe lower back pain with jaundice, nausea, and loss of 9 kg in 3 months. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated a

Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung neoplasms with tracheal bronchus: a case report.

A 63-year-old woman came to our department complaint that an abnormal shadow was identified by chest computed tomography (CT). CT revealed a 21 mm × 18 mm solid nodule in the right upper lobe of lung, which was suspected to be lung cancer. We also found a bronchus directly arising from the trachea and running into the right upper lobe, which appeared to be tracheal bronchus (TB). Then she underwent the right upper lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection using uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery. During the surgery we found two bronchi which were posterior to the pulmonary hilum r

Mutational profiling of kinases in human tumours of pancreatic origin identifies candidate cancer genes in ductal and ampulla of vater carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: Protein kinases are key regulators of cellular processes (such as proliferation, apoptosis and invasion) that are often deregulated in human cancers. Accordingly, kinase genes have been the first to be systematically analyzed in human tumors leading to the discovery that many oncogenes correspond to mutated kinases. In most cases the genetic alterations translate in constitutively active kinase proteins, which are amenable of therapeutic targeting. Tumours of the pancreas are aggressive neoplasms for which no effective therapeutic strategy is currently available. METHODOLOGY/PRINC

Second neoplasms following high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation for malignant lymphomas: a report of six cases in a cohort of 171 patients from a single institution.

High dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is increasingly used in the treatment of patients with lymphoma. As previously shown with conventional treatments, second neoplasms are emerging as a long term complication of the procedure. In this study, we investigate the incidence of second neoplasm in a cohort of 171 patients treated with BEAM or BEAC regimens for Hodgkin's disease (n = 62) and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (n = 109) followed up for a median of 52 months post ASCT. Six patients developed six second malignancies 12 to 105 months after ASCT: fibrolamellar car
