Sialadenoma papilliferum: clinicopathologic, Immunohistochemical, molecular analyses of new five cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) is an extremely rare benign neoplasm of salivary glands. To explore and define the clinicopathological features of SP, we retrospectively analyzed 89 cases previously reported and five new cases. METHODS: The clinical features, histopathology, immunohistochemistry and molecular analysis of our cases were further performed and the related literatures were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: Combining 89 cases from the literature with our cases, the hard palate was the most common locations for SP. However, two of our cases were rarely located in the esoph

Risk of Oral Complications Among IL-17 Inhibitor Users: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: IL-17 inhibitors are increasingly used in dermatologic and autoimmune diseases, yet the risks of associated oral complications remain unclear. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov were comprehensively searched. The primary outcome was the incidence of oral complications following IL-17 inhibitors therapy. A meta-analysis was conducted using random-effects models. RESULTS: A total of 106 clinical trials involving 57,017 participants were included. Oral mucosal infections were the most frequently observed complications. Meta-analysis was performed to eval

Radiographic features of subungual keratoacanthomas in dogs.

Subungual keratoacanthoma (SK) is a digital neoplasm that has rarely been reported in dogs and carries an excellent prognosis following surgical removal. Radiographic features of canine SK have only been briefly discussed in two prior case reports. Both articles described extensive distal phalangeal osteolysis, a feature more commonly associated with malignant digital neoplasms (e.g., subungual squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or melanoma). This retrospective case series aimed to further characterize radiographic findings of histologically confirmed canine SK. Seven dogs met the inclusion criteri

Penile and preputial tumours in the horse: literature review and proposal of a standardised approach.

Penile and preputial tumours are not uncommon in the horse, but can cause discomfort and lead to serious complications. Several types of tumour of the male external genitalia have been described. The most common type is the squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which is found mainly in older horses. Reports of a breed predilection for penile tumour formation are equivocal, but castration, coat colour, poor hygiene and various infectious agents have all been suggested to predispose to the development of some types of tumour (e.g. SCC, papilloma and melanoma). Careful assessment of the primary tumour i

Expression of Aurora kinase A and B in normal and malignant cervical tissue: high Aurora A kinase expression in squamous cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Aurora kinases such as Aurora A and B are key regulators of mitosis and tumorigenesis and have been reported to be overexpressed in various malignancies. However, the expression of Aurora kinases in normal and neoplastic cervical tissues remains undetermined. STUDY DESIGN: Immunohistochemical expression of Aurora A and B kinase was examined in 20 normal cervix, 35 cervical intraepithelial neoplasm 3 (CIN 3) and 95 cervical cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (n=76) and adenocarcinoma (AC) (n=19). Expression of Aurora A and B kinase was confirmed by Western blot. The co

Glottic versus supraglottic tumors: differential molecular profile.

Glottis and supraglottis, although anatomically interconnected, are embryologically distinct. Moreover, squamous cell carcinomas arising from these subsites, differ in terms of epidemiology, risk factors, clinical behaviour and prognosis. This study aims to explore any possible differences between their molecular profiles. We investigated in the two tumor types, the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) and retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRalpha), principal signal transducers associated with cancer, as well as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme

Wolf in sheep's clothing - Oral proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: Progression with longitudinal molecular insights.

BACKGROUND: Oral proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (OPVL) is a chronic form of oral leukoplakia that progresses to a multifocal disease with confluent, exophytic and proliferative features. The clinical differential diagnosis for OPVL includes frictional keratosis, leukoplakia, chronic hyperplastic candidiasis, squamous papilloma, verrucous hyperplasia, verrucous carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. In this study, we aimed to delineate the dynamic changes in molecular signature during OPVL progression. We compare to a cohort of oral cavity keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patien

Thymic carcinoma arising in thymoma is associated with alterations in immunohistochemical profile.

Thymic carcinoma is an uncommon tumor. Most cases appear to arise de novo, but in rare instances they can arise in thymomas. We report the clinicopathologic features and immunohistochemical profile of five cases of thymic carcinoma accompanied by a component of thymoma. Immunohistochemical studies were performed with the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method using monoclonal antibodies to p53(DO7), CD99(O13), epithelial membrane antigen, CD5(NCL-CD5-4C7), vimentin (V9), and cytokeratins 7, 8, 18, and 19. The patients consisted of three men and two women with a median age of 57 years. One pat

Molecular Pathology of Thyroid Tumors: Essential Points to Comprehend Regarding the Latest WHO Classification.

In 2022, the new WHO Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors, Fifth Edition (beta version) (WHO 5th), was published. Large-scale genomic analyses such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) have revealed the importance of understanding the molecular genetics of thyroid tumors. Consequently, the WHO 5th was fundamentally revised, resulting in a systematic classification based on the cell of origin of tumors and their clinical risk. This paper outlines the following critical points of the WHO 5th. 1. Genetic mutations in follicular cell-derived neoplasms (FDNs) highlight the role of mut

Diagnostic utility of CD56 immunohistochemistry in papillary carcinoma of the thyroid.

Diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), in many but not all cases, is an easily achievable diagnosis with almost minimal interobservable variability between pathologists. However, some cases of PTC, particularly the follicular variant, are quite challenging and show wide interobservable variability even among expert thyroid pathologists. Since proper diagnosis of PTC is crucial as it affects patients' clinical management and prognosis, indications of PTC must be clearly apparent to be an objective rather than a subjective diagnosis. Unfortunately, to date, immunohistochemistry and mole

Foregoing elective neck dissection for elderly patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Elective neck dissection (END) improves outcomes among clinically node-negative patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). However, END is of questionable value, considering the potentially higher comorbidities and operative risks in elderly patients. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients older than 65 years of age who were treated for OCSCC at a tertiary care centre between 2005 and 2020 was conducted. RESULTS: Fifty-three patients underwent primary tumour resection alone, and 71 had simultaneous END. Most primary tumours were located on the mobile tongu

Immunotherapy response in patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck with cranial nerve involvement.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic or locally advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) can be treated with immunotherapy (IO). Cranial nerve involvement (CNI) is uncommon in cSCC and is a poor prognostic factor. Our aim is to describe how patients with CNI respond to IO monotherapy and/or as an adjunct to RT. METHODS: Under an IRB approved protocol, patients with histologically proven cSCC of the head and neck with CNI treated with IO were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Twelve patients were included and received cemiplimab or pembrolizumab. Eight patients had CNI at diagnosis, and 4 at time

Radiation therapy for low- and high-risk perineural invasion in head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: Clinical outcomes and patterns of failure.

BACKGROUND: Perineural invasion (PNI) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) portends poor prognosis. Extent of treatment of nerve pathways with varying degrees of PNI and patterns of failure following elective neural radiotherapy (RT) remain unclear. METHODS: Retrospective review of HNSCC patients with high-risk (clinical/gross, large-nerve, extensive) or low-risk (microscopic/focal) PNI who underwent curative-intent treatment from 2010 to 2021. RESULTS: Forty-four patients (mean follow-up 22 months; 59% high-risk, 41% low-risk PNI) were included. Recurrence following definitive t

Controversies in the treatment of early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma.

The treatment of early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is still a controversial issue. Thanks to the 8th edition of TNM by AJCC there is a better distinction between the stages of OSCC. However, Stages I and II still share the same treatment protocol, even if the prognosis is radically different. A retrospective study has been conducted including 70 previously untreated patients with Stage I or II OSCC, treated with tumorectomy and selective neck dissection. The study focuses on the link between pT1/2 and various other factors, particularly histological grading, vascular and perineur

A nationwide study on cancer recurrences, second primary tumours, distant metastases and survival after treatment for primary head and neck cancer in the Netherlands.

INTRODUCTION: There is no consensus on the optimal duration of post-treatment follow-up after head and neck cancer (HNC). To generate site-specific input for follow-up guidelines, this study describes the incidence and timing of manifestations of disease during five years of follow-up. METHODS: All patients diagnosed with HNC in the Netherlands in 2015 were selected from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. The follow-up events local recurrence (LR), regional recurrence (RR), second primary tumour (SPT), distant metastasis (DM) and death were studied per follow-up-year. The cumulative incidence o
