This study aimed to assess whether previously established risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are still valid now that the incidence in the Netherlands has dropped to 0.26 per 1000 liveborn infants. A distinction was made between immutable and mutable risk factors. PURPOSE: To determine the effective dose to the patient during radiographic colon examination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The integral dose-area product was measured during colon examination in 1,733 patients aged 18-94 years. The effective dose was estimated from the dose-area product through computer simulations of radiation transport in anthropomorphic phantoms. During the fall and winter of 1992-1993 an outbreak of wild poliovirus type 3-associated poliomyelitis involving 71 patients occurred in The Netherlands. The epidemiological data of 740 patients with primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lips or oral cavity is reported. The mean age was 63 years. The mean onset of oral cancer in women was 7 years later than in men. Patients under the age of 40 years were mainly males. The response of 310 patients with typhoid or paratyphoid fevers to current antibiotic therapy was studied retrospectively. Most patients were of Asian or European origin, thus reflecting the areas in which they were infected. Of the 244 patients with well-recorded therapy 63% were treated with chloramphenicol, 22% with co-trimoxazole and the remainder with various penicillins. There was little difference in response in terms of resolution of fever. Symptoms persisted in only two of 153 (1.3%) patients given chloramphenicol but side-effects led to a change of treatment in nine of these patients

Case histories of 692 patients with meningococcal disease due to serogroup B, C, or W (W-135) were reviewed to study the association of the serotypes 2a and 2b with the course of disease. The case-fatality rate in group B disease was significantly associated with serotype 2b (B:2b) strains (P = 0.03). Age and year of admission did not account for this association. Two hundred and twenty-two large animal practitioners in the Netherlands were studied serologically for the presence of antibodies to Coxiella burnetii (Q-fever) and Brucella abortus. Eighty-four percent showed antibodies to Coxiella burnetii, which were equally distributed over all age-groups.
