INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to demonstrate single fascicular involvement in common fibular (CF) neuropathy using high-resolution ultrasound (US).
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 40 adult patients with clinical and electrodiagnostic suspected CF neuropathy between April 2012 and December 2014. Two musculoskeletal radiologists used high-resolution US probes to prospectively and independently evaluate the CF nerve bilaterally in these patients. The presence of single fascicular involvement (increased cross-sectional area and loss of fascicular echotexture) was recorded.

INTRODUCTION: Superficial radial sensory nerve (SRN) injury may involve the main nerve or its distal medial or lateral branch. We investigated the utility of SRN conduction studies on the medial and lateral branches in patients with suspected SRN injury.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with symptoms of SRN neuropathy were studied. Their clinical and electrophysiological findings were assessed according to sensory symptom areas. Three active recording electrode positions were used: snuff box (position A); medial branch (position B); and lateral branch (position C).
RESULTS: In 7 patients with media

In this study, we report the status of oxidative stress markers in vitamin B12 deficiency and their relation to clinical, laboratory, and neurophysiological findings. Fifty-one subjects with serum vitamin B12 deficiency (<211 pg/ml) were included. Plasma glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) and serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured in the patients and 53 controls. These markers were also compared between subacute combined degeneration (SACD) and non-SACD vitamin B12 deficiency patients groups as well as with normal controls. In the patients, GSH, MDA and TAC were correlated

We investigated the muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) during gait phases of the lower limb muscles in individuals with various degrees of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Forty-five patients were classified into severity degrees of DPN by a fuzzy model. The stages were absent (n=11), mild (n=14), moderate (n=11) and severe (n=9), with 10 matched healthy controls. While walking, all subjects had their sEMG (4 linear electrode arrays) recorded for tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius medialis (GM), vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (BF). MFCV was calculated using a maximum lik

Spinocerebellar Ataxias (SCAs) are a group of autosomal dominantly inherited neurodegenerative diseases, involving the cerebellum and the brainstem. Genetic testing is the most important method of diagnosis. Nowadays, nearly 40 types of SCAs have been identified by genetic analysis. Peripheral nerve impairment is common in SCAs: electrophysiological examination of SCA1, SCA2 and SCA3 usually shows sensorimotor and sensory neuropathy, while pure motor neuropathy is more rare, being seen only in SCA2. The abnormal VEP of SCA1, SCA2 and SCA3 include prolonged P100 latencies and reduced P100 ampli

The objective of this study was to improve the accuracy of diagnosis of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury by determining degrees of nerve disturbance using the sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) and sensory nerve conduction velocity (SCV). Crush and partial and complete nerve amputation injuries were applied to the IAN of rabbits, then SNAPs and histomorphometric observations were recorded at 1, 5, and 10 weeks. For crush injury, most nerves were smaller in diameter at 5 weeks than at 1 week, however after 10 weeks, extensive nerve regeneration was observed. The SNAP showed a decrease in

BACKGROUND: Autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA) are a group of inherited neurodegenerative disorders that typically show peripheral neuropathy. SCA7 is one of the rarest forms of SCA (<1/100,000 individuals). However, the disease shows a prevalence of ∼800/100,000 inhabitants in certain regions of Mexico. This low global prevalence may explain, at least in part, the isolated anecdotal and limited clinical data regarding peripheral neuropathy in SCA7 patients.
AIM: To assess sensory and motor peripheral nerve action potentials in an SCA7 patients group and in healthy volunteers, a

PURPOSE: F-wave analysis may help affirm or disprove a compression neuropathy. In this study we have analysed the effects of focal median nerve injury on F wave in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).
METHOD: We studied 57 patients (100 hands) with clinical and electrophysiological CTS and 31 (62 hands) healthy subjects. Median nerve F-waves were evaluated following 10 supramaximal stimuli and recording from abductor pollicis brevis muscles. Minimum, maximum, and mean F-wave latencies, frequency of the F wave (Fp), chronodispersion (F<formula>_{CD}</formula>), mean F/M amplitude ratios (mF/M-amp) an

BACKGROUND: Spastic paraplegia 3A typically manifests in childhood as an uncomplicated form of hereditary spastic paraplegia with slow progression. Most affected individuals present with spasticity and weakness in the legs before the end of the first decade.
PATIENT: We describe a 12-year-old boy with neonatal onset of extremely severe complicated spastic paraplegia 3A associated with a de novo c.1226G>A (p.G409D) mutation in ATL1, a gene which encodes atlatsin GTPase 1. He manifested general hypertonia and hypokinesia since the neonatal period and was initially diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

OBJECTIVES: Due to the similarity in the clinical presentation, morphology, and course, celiac disease (CD) may be mixed up with other immunological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS).
CASE REPORT: In a 43-year-old Caucasian male with a history of diarrhea and colics since young age, progressive sensory disturbances developed since age 18 years. At age 34, he was diagnosed as relapsing-remitting MS upon an inflammatory CSF-syndrome and non-specific white matter lesions and treated with interferon beta-1b during the next 8 years without effect. At age 35, axonal polyneuropathy and atax

We had previously reported that small gap neurorrhaphy by scissoring and sleeve-jointing epineurium could enhance the rate and quality of peripheral nerve regeneration. To date, local implantation and systemic delivery of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have been routinely used in nerve tissue engineering, but they each have some intrinsic limitations. We hypothesised that targeted muscular administration of BMSCs capable of reaching the damaged nerve would be advisable. Here, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of transplantation of BMSCs through targeted muscular injection wi

Electrocution injuries account for a significant amount of burns unit admissions each year, and can be fatal. These injuries are divided into high-voltage (over 1000 volts) and low-voltage (less than 1000 volts) injuries, with lightning strikes (greater than 100 million volts) considered separately. Although the majority of electrocution injuries are of low voltage, most of the published reports concern industrial/high-voltage and lightning injuries. This disparity may trivialize low-voltage injuries in the minds of clinicians. We report a rare case of trineural (median, ulnar, and radial) inj

BACKGROUND: A number of evidence-based guidelines now recommend that a nerve conduction study should be used to confirm the existence of carpal tunnel syndrome before any surgery takes place.
METHOD: The article is based on a search in PubMed, a personal literature archive (1980-2011) and long clinical experience of neurological and neurophysiological diagnostics.
RESULTS: Both motor and sensory nerve fascicles must be tested after adequate warming up. An extended nerve conduction study with supplementary tests to compare velocities and latencies in median and ulnar nerves, increases the dia

Chronic catecholamine production is associated with desensitisation and down-regulation of adrenergic receptors and occurs in conditions, such as heart failure and myocardial infarction. The effects of further acute adrenergic stimulation, which may occur during exercise, and their subsequent effects on chemosensitivity and ventilation are unclear. Chronic isoprenaline (ISO) increased ventilation by 50 % (P < 0.05) yet the sensitivity to graded hypoxia was preserved. Acute noradrenaline (NA) in control animals led to a doubling of ventilation in hyperoxia (P < 0.001), and this difference was p

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a group of autoimmune diseases characterised by acute, acquired and immune-mediated polyneuroradiculopathy. A large number of clinical subtypes of GBS have been described over last 100 years since the first description of this syndrome. We report two such cases GBS variants--first, AMAN with brisk reflexes and second being acute motor axonal neuropathy with conduction block. Through this case report, we intend to make the treating physicians and neurologist aware of these rare variants so that such cases would be appropriately diagnosed and treated.

INTRODUCTION: Paraneoplastic lower motor neuronopathies have been reported rarely with Hodgkin lymphoma.
METHODS: We report a case of rapidly progressive motor neuronopathy preceding the diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma.
RESULTS: A 31-year-old woman developed subacute rapidly progressive quadriparesis. Electrodiagnostic studies revealed a severe diffuse disorder of motor neurons and their axons. Symmetric enhancement of the cauda equina motor nerve roots was notable on magnetic resonance imaging scan. Further imaging demonstrated an enlarged supraclavicular lymph node, and biopsy revealed Hodgk
