Cachexia/Protein energy wasting syndrome in CKD: Causation and treatment.

Cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome defined by significant body weight loss, fat and muscle mass reduction, and increased protein catabolism. Protein energy wasting (PEW) is characterized as a syndrome of adverse changes in nutrition and body composition being highly prevalent in patients with CKD, especially in those undergoing dialysis, and it is associated with high morbidity and mortality in this population. Multiple mechanisms are involved in the genesis of these adverse nutritional changes in CKD patients. There is no obvious distinction between PEW and cachexia from a pathophysiologic

[Metabolic and Nutritional Management for Cancer Cachexia].

There are 4 purposes in the nutritional management for cancer patient. At first, we had better perform the early metabolic recovery from several invasive damages by some cancer treatments. At second, we give some special nutritional management for improvement from cancer cachexia. At third, we consider palliative nutritional management to terminal cancer patients based on pathophysiology of cachexia, their life styles and ethics. Finally, we give the social nutritional management for keeping high quality of life through well eating until the end of life. In this paper, we explained about the m

Nutrition assessment of horse-racing athletes.

Athletes involved in horse racing face weight restrictions like wrestlers and dancers; however, the literature is sparse pertaining to nutritional habits of jockeys. The practice of "making weight" causes these athletes to engage in potentially unhealthy practices. A gap in nutritionally sound practices and methods used by jockeys was identified and a desire for nutrition education was expressed to Cooperative Extension of Delaware by representatives of the riders at Delaware Park Race Track. Nutrition assessment was done using the Nutrition Care Process. Twenty jockeys were interviewed using

Assessment and management of nutrition and growth in Rett syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: We developed recommendations for the clinical management of poor growth and weight gain in Rett syndrome through evidence review and the consensus of an expert panel of clinicians. METHODS: Initial draft recommendations were created based upon literature review and 34 open-ended questions in which the literature was lacking. Statements and questions were made available to an international, multidisciplinary panel of clinicians in an online format and a Microsoft Word-formatted version of the draft via e-mail. Input was sought using a 2-stage modified Delphi process to reach consen

[Nutrition for elderly acute stroke patients].

BACKGROUND: Elderly people have an increased risk of malnutrition due to biological and physiological changes and underlying disease. Almost 90% of the stroke patients are older than 65 years, and the consequences of acute stroke may lead to additional nutritional problems. This paper reviews nutritional therapy for stroke patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD: PubMed was searched (non-systematically) for prospective cohort studies of occurrence, diagnostics and consequences of undernutrition in stroke patients. Randomized trials were examined to identify clinical effects of oral protein and energy s

Association between nutrition and gender during lactation influencing glucose homeostasis and blood pressure of the adult offspring.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that the association between nutritional status and gender of rat pups during the early postnatal period (lactation) induces changes in glucose homeostasis and blood pressure of the pups when becoming adults. The results indicate that undernourishment during lactation is associated with gender and affects glucose homeostasis and blood pressure of female adults. In our experiments, the blood glucose level at the end of a clamping was significantly different in the undernourished females (FU) compared with the female controls (FC) (FC: 11.2 +/

[Complete parenteral nutrition in childhood].

Complete parenteral nutrition by means of continuous intravenous drip into large veins, over a long period, has already shown itself to be of therapeutic use in the field of pediatrics. While the nutritional-physiological aspect of this therapeutic method is clear -- it depends on an accurate and sufficient supply of water, salts, glucose, amino-acids, triglycerides and essential fatty acids, vitamins and trace elements -- in practice it presents difficulties which though often serious are not insurmountable. Especially are to cite the septic complications, which are nearly imperceptible durin

Sensitive measures of nutritional status in children in hospital and in the field.

Protein-energy malnutrition and obesity are the most common nutritional disorders that complicate the clinical course of children with neoplastic diseases. Sensitive measures of nutritional status should be used to detect these problems in children with cancer. Height and weight measurements are the mainstay of the nutritional assessment of the child. These measurements can be converted to growth velocities or to height-for-age and weight-for-height Z-scores or percent of expected values to provide a measure of the degree of under- or over-nutrition in the child. Skinfold thickness and circumf

Epigenetics of Skeletal Diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Epigenetic mechanisms modify gene activity in a stable manner without altering DNA sequence. They participate in the adaptation to the environment, as well as in the pathogenesis of common complex disorders. We provide an overview of the role of epigenetic mechanisms in bone biology and pathology. RECENT FINDINGS: Extensive evidence supports the involvement of epigenetic mechanisms (DNA methylation, post-translational modifications of histone tails, and non-coding RNAs) in the differentiation of bone cells and mechanotransduction. A variety of epigenetic abnormalities have

Neurological abnormalities associated with celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is a gluten-sensitive enteropathy in genetically susceptible individuals. Anecdotal reports suggest that the nervous system might be affected in the disorder, but the severity and prevalence of such an involvement have not been systematically evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analysis of files of CD patients diagnosed between 1980 and 1999 for neurological abnormalities. Diagnosis of CD was based on the modified criteria of the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. RESULTS: Of 148 CD patients, 18 (12%) had 21 neurological disorders tha

The Psychological Dimensions of Dieting: A Two-Phase Study on Body Appreciation, Nutritional Awareness and Mental Well-Being.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dieting is a widespread behavior that is associated with psychological distress, body dissatisfaction, and eating disorders. Recent research suggests that a body-positive attitude and mindful approach to eating may influence individuals' experiences with dieting; however, their combined role has been insufficiently explored. METHODS: A two-phase study was conducted among voluntary adults using online data collection. In Phase 1, a cross-sectional survey was completed by 180 participants (71.7% women), assessing dieting behavior, body appreciation, nutritional awareness,

Inappropriate feeding behaviors and dietary intakes in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder or probable prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a leading cause of significant neurobehavioral and neurocognitive deficits. Its potential consequences for eating behaviors, nutritional status, and other nutritional issues in childhood have received little attention. METHODS: Nineteen children (11 boys, 8 girls) of mean age 9.6 years, referred for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) screening and assessment, were analyzed with physical exams and caregiver questionnaires to identify possible abnormalities in food and eating behaviors. Fourteen children contributed 24-hour diet recalls and wer

Exploring the role of diet in modulating stress and emotional health: a review on mental nutrition and cognitive resilience.

The rise in mental-health-related disorders, including anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment worldwide, has increased the demand for preventative non-pharmacological interventions and intervention aimed at modifiable lifestyle factors - particularly diet. Growing evidence shows that plant-based nutrition, with its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, is critically important for cognitive resilience, emotional stability, and mental wellbeing. Essential nutrient and bioactive compounds such as ω-3 fatty acids, polyphenols, B vitamins, magnesium, and probiotics themselves act on

Fermented Foods, Functional Nutrition, and Maternal Gut Microbiota During Pregnancy: Molecular Mechanisms and the Maternal-Infant Microbiome Axis.

Pregnancy is associated with profound metabolic, hormonal, and immunological adaptations accompanied by dynamic alterations in maternal gut microbiota composition and function. Emerging evidence suggests that maternal diet is a major regulator of these microbiota-related changes and may influence maternal-fetal health through microbial metabolites and host signaling pathways. Fermented foods and functional dietary components, including prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, and polyphenols, have gained increasing attention because of their potential to modulate gut microbial diversity, intestinal
